To run a continuous birdsong broadcast from an Indian VPS, put the media where the server can read it, run FFmpeg in real time, and send it to the RTMPS ingestion address and stream key shown in YouTube Live Control Room. Allow outbound TCP port 443, choose settings your VPS connection can sustain, and monitor YouTube’s stream health. A running FFmpeg process alone does not guarantee an uninterrupted or healthy YouTube broadcast.
Choose the setup before starting
You need a Linux VPS with shell access, FFmpeg, readable source media, and a YouTube channel able to use Live Control Room. The exact server size depends on your bitrate, whether FFmpeg must transcode, and where the media is stored; no universal minimum CPU, RAM, or disk size is established here.
Check the VPS plan and route
Before buying or configuring a server, check whether the provider offers the India region you want, sustained outbound capacity, outbound TCP port 443, egress limits or charges, storage and transfer options, monitoring, and support. Do not assume a provider’s advertised region or plan name proves that its route to YouTube is stable or that its bandwidth is unlimited.
Estimate network use from the combined audio and video bitrates. For example, a stream near 8 Mbps video plus 128 Kbps audio needs outbound capacity above that combined rate, with operating margin for protocol overhead and variation. YouTube’s bitrate guidance is a setting reference, not a VPS performance guarantee.

Choose where the media lives
Store the recording on the VPS or make it accessible to the FFmpeg process from another location. Confirm that the process account can read the file and that available storage or transfer capacity suits your plan. For a single still image with birdsong, video encoding may be unnecessary if the source format and intended output permit stream copying; if you need a different codec, resolution, frame rate, or image treatment, transcoding may be required and adds CPU load.
Get YouTube’s current ingest details
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or select the live stream for the broadcast.
- Copy the current RTMPS server URL and the stream key or stream name shown for that stream. YouTube’s RTMPS documentation describes the ingestion address and stream name; the exact URL assembly depends on the encoder interface. - Keep the key private. Do not publish it in a command example, screenshot, support post, or log. Restrict access to configuration files that contain it.
- Confirm that outbound TCP connections to port 443 are permitted. YouTube states that the connection to the ingestion server must use port 443. YouTube RTMPS ingestion documentation
Choose encoder settings for a birdsong stream
YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS ingest, H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate encoding, frame rates up to 60 fps, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. For ordinary RTMPS workflows, use settings supported by your FFmpeg build and accepted by the live stream. These are YouTube’s published H.264 video figures, not measurements of an Indian VPS or combined audio-and-video rates. Choose a setting your server’s sustained upload can support and test it. A static image or low-motion scene may not need a high frame rate or resolution; decide based on the source and the viewing experience you intend.

Audio settings
YouTube’s advanced guidance lists stereo audio at 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps. For 5.1 surround, it lists 48 kHz and 384 Kbps, with AAC required for 5.1 over RTMP/RTMPS. For a birdsong recording, verify that the source is audible, has no unwanted clipping, and plays continuously through the loop.

YouTube recommends RTMPS, the encrypted extension to RTMP. Its protocol comparison describes RTMPS as suitable for normal, low, or ultra-low latency and supporting H.264. HLS and DASH can offer other codec options, but they are segment-based and typically introduce more latency. Run FFmpeg from the VPS
The command below is a starting-point pattern, not an officially endorsed YouTube command or a tested end-to-end configuration. Validate it against your installed FFmpeg build, source codecs, and current YouTube stream settings. Substitute the actual file path and current RTMPS URL plus key from Live Control Room; never place a real key in published material.

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i /path/to/birdsong.mp4 -c copy -f flv "rtmps://CURRENT_YOUTUBE_INGEST_URL/CURRENT_STREAM_KEY"-re reads the input at its natural rate so a file is sent in real time; -stream_loop -1 asks FFmpeg to repeat the input indefinitely; -i identifies the media; -c copy avoids re-encoding compatible streams; and -f flv selects the output container used in FFmpeg’s documented RTMP-family example. Stream copying is appropriate only when the input codecs and stream characteristics are accepted by the ingest path and match the settings you need. If not, replace -c copy with explicit video and audio encoding options appropriate to your chosen resolution, frame rate, bitrate, keyframe interval, and audio format. Encoding options must be tested with the installed FFmpeg version and YouTube preview; there is no single safe setting for every birdsong file.
Keep the process running and manageable
For a long-running service, use an operating-system service manager or supervisor so the process can be observed and restarted after exit. Keep useful logs, but ensure they do not expose the stream key. Plan how an operator will detect a network interruption and verify that a restarted process reconnects correctly. A supervisor can restart a failed process; it does not guarantee VPS uptime, restore the exact stream state, or ensure YouTube accepts the reconnect.

Test and monitor the broadcast
- Start with a representative test of the actual birdsong audio and visuals before relying on the stream. YouTube advises: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” YouTube encoder settings and bitrate guidance
- Check YouTube Live Control Room’s preview, stream health, and messages for configuration warnings. YouTube’s Live Streaming API exposes stream status and health information that can help identify configuration issues. YouTube LiveStreams API
- Confirm FFmpeg is still running and that outbound traffic is flowing; verify the preview plays, the audio is audible and not clipping, and the image behaves as intended.
- After any change to bitrate, codec, keyframe interval, media file, or VPS network configuration, test again rather than assuming the previous result still applies.
Plan for interruptions and YouTube event limits
RTMPS delivers the encoder feed to YouTube, but a 24/7 schedule is not automatically the same as one YouTube live event that can continue indefinitely. The available documentation does not establish a universal maximum event duration, archive behavior for a continuous event, channel eligibility, or the right restart strategy for every account. Check the current account-specific Live Control Room controls and YouTube policies before relying on a particular duration or expecting a recording to be archived.
Also distinguish recovery at different layers: a process supervisor may restart FFmpeg after a process exit, while network failure, VPS failure, ingest rejection, or YouTube event closure can require additional operator action. Monitor both the server and YouTube rather than treating a process status as proof the channel remains live.
Check rights before looping birdsong
Make sure you have the necessary rights to broadcast the birdsong recording and any accompanying visuals. Nature sounds are not automatically public domain or cleared for reuse. Encoder and ingest settings do not establish permission to use a recording, and YouTube’s current content policies still apply.
