How to Run an Online Radio Stream on YouTube from a Low-Power PC

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You can run a radio-style YouTube Live stream from a modest PC by keeping the visual scene simple, starting with conservative encoder settings, and testing the machine and upload connection before broadcasting. There is no universal minimum processor that guarantees success: OBS says the workload depends on the encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. For continuous programming, plan shorter sessions if you need YouTube archives or DVR rewind, and clear the necessary music rights before going live.

What you need before starting

  • A YouTube channel eligible for live streaming. It must be verified and free of live-streaming restrictions from the preceding 90 days; creators must be at least 16. First-time live-stream activation can take up to 24 hours. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance and encoder setup instructions.
  • A computer that can sustain your chosen audio, video, and encoding settings, plus a stable internet upload connection.
  • An encoder such as OBS Studio, and the stream URL and private stream key supplied by YouTube Studio.
  • Audio routed into the encoder. If your completed radio program already plays on the PC, you may be able to capture that audio directly. A microphone or external line-level source may require compatible input hardware such as a preamp or audio interface.
  • Rights to every track and other third-party element in the broadcast.

OBS is free and open-source, and includes an Auto-Configuration Wizard. Its system requirements page cautions that compatible hardware does not guarantee streaming capacity; that page is dated August 25, 2021, so treat its compatibility details accordingly. OBS system requirements · OBS Auto-Configuration Wizard.

Set up YouTube Live and OBS

  1. Confirm live access. In YouTube Studio, verify that live streaming is enabled for the channel. If this is your first activation, allow up to 24 hours before expecting to broadcast.
  2. Create or schedule an encoder stream. In YouTube Studio, create or schedule the live event and open its stream settings. Copy the stream URL and stream key into OBS. Keep the key private: anyone with access to it may be able to send a stream to your event.
  3. Choose YouTube/RTMPS in OBS. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted ingest. Selecting YouTube or RTMPS in the encoder is simpler than assembling a connection manually. RTMPS carries RTMP over SSL/TLS; YouTube’s developer documentation specifies port 443 for its RTMPS connection. See YouTube encoder settings and YouTube RTMPS ingestion.
  4. Make a low-load scene. Use one still station graphic or a restrained, low-motion visual. Remove animated effects, browser overlays, and sources you do not need. This is a practical way to reduce rendering work, not a guarantee or benchmark for a particular PC.
  5. Set up the audio source. If the station output is already playing on the computer, select the relevant system or application audio source in OBS. For a host microphone or external mixer output, connect compatible input hardware and select it as an audio input. Check that the meter moves and that the signal is neither silent nor clipping.
  6. Start with conservative output settings. Use the encoder baseline below as a reference, not a promise that your PC can handle it. On a weaker system, try a lower resolution or frame rate, then test with representative audio and visuals. OBS’s Auto-Configuration Wizard can suggest a starting point; it cannot establish long-term stability.
  7. Test in Live Control Room. Start the encoder and inspect YouTube’s preview and stream-health indicators before going live to viewers. Run an upload speed test and watch for dropped frames in OBS. If dropped frames rise, lower the configured bitrate or investigate the network rather than assuming the PC alone is at fault.
  8. Go live and monitor. Once the preview and audio are correct, start the live event in YouTube Studio. Keep an eye on stream health, sound, and the encoder while the session runs.

Encoder settings: a conservative starting point

YouTube’s published values are ingest recommendations, not measurements of CPU load. For H.264 at 720p and 30 fps, YouTube lists 3 Mbps as the minimum video bitrate setting and recommends 8 Mbps. A low-power PC may need lower output settings to encode reliably; test rather than treating the recommended bitrate as a hardware requirement. For an audio-first radio stream, a still image and lower-resolution output can be sensible first tests.

Setting YouTube guidance How to apply it
Ingest protocol RTMPS recommended for encrypted transmission Choose YouTube/RTMPS in the encoder where available.
Video codec H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 listed Use a codec supported by your encoder and YouTube ingest setup; H.264 is the baseline used for the 720p/30 bitrate figures.
Video bitrate H.264 720p/30: 3 Mbps minimum; 8 Mbps recommended Start lower if the PC or connection struggles, then test for stable encoding and upload.
Frame rate Up to 60 fps A radio station with a still visual usually has little reason to begin at a high frame rate; use a lower setting if it reduces system load.
Keyframe interval 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds Set the encoder keyframe interval to 2 seconds where the setting is available.
Rate control CBR recommended Use constant bitrate for the stream.
Audio format AAC or MP3 Choose a format supported by your encoder’s YouTube output.
Stereo audio 44.1 kHz sample rate; 128 kbps recommended bitrate Use these as YouTube ingest targets, then verify the audio in the preview.

These are YouTube’s encoder recommendations, accessed October 3, 2026; they do not establish what any particular low-power computer can encode. YouTube’s current encoder settings.

Clear music rights before broadcasting

Do not assume that music available on terrestrial radio, a subscription service, or a library described as royalty-free is automatically licensed for a YouTube live broadcast. YouTube’s live-stream terms require the content provider to have the rights needed for use on Google services, including relevant music rights from artists, labels, publishers, and other rights participants. The applicable licensing route can depend on territory and the rights involved. YouTube Terms of Service.

YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. If it detects protected material, it may replace the live image with a placeholder and warn you; continued use can lead to interruption or termination. Even a creator who has obtained a license may be interrupted if the rights owner has not added the channel to its Content ID allowlist. Contact the relevant rights holders and arrange allowlisting where necessary before airing licensed music. YouTube guidance on live-streaming restrictions.

Plan a continuous station around archive limits

YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived when eligible. A stream that exceeds 12 hours may not be captured at all, and DVR rewind can be limited or unavailable on very long streams. If replay matters, end and restart sessions before reaching the 12-hour threshold, test the transition for audio continuity, and keep a local recording as a backup. These are platform caveats, not a guarantee of unattended 24/7 uptime for an individual PC or account. YouTube archive and DVR guidance.

Troubleshoot common problems

Symptom Likely checks and fixes
You cannot start a live stream Check channel verification, live-stream eligibility, and any restriction from the preceding 90 days. If this is the first activation, allow up to 24 hours.
YouTube shows no incoming signal Confirm OBS is using the correct YouTube/RTMPS server and current stream key, then start the encoder. If you replaced or reset the key, update OBS with the new one.
The audio is missing or too quiet Check that the correct system, application, microphone, or line input is selected and that its OBS meter moves. Verify the YouTube preview before starting the public event.
OBS reports rising dropped frames Run an upload speed test, reduce the bitrate, and check the connection for instability. Dropped frames can indicate that the network cannot sustain the configured bitrate.
The PC struggles even with audio working Remove unnecessary scene sources and motion, reduce output resolution or frame rate, and test again. OBS does not publish a universal CPU threshold that guarantees a stream.
Music triggers a warning or interruption Stop or replace the material unless you have the necessary rights. If licensed, ask the rights holder about Content ID allowlisting for your channel before resuming.
A long stream has no replay Check its duration: streams over 12 hours may not be captured, and long-stream DVR may be limited or unavailable. Use shorter sessions and keep a local archive if replay is important.

Or let it run in the cloud

If keeping the PC on is the hard part, StreamNeo runs uploaded videos as a YouTube stream from the cloud. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; each slot supports the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price, with no re-encode or quality tiers, and automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. It plays uploaded videos rather than broadcasting live camera input. Start the free StreamNeo day.
