Yes. You can run FFmpeg on a Linux instance in AWS Lightsail and send its video output to YouTube Live using the stream URL and key shown in YouTube Live Control Room. The VPS sends an outbound stream; you do not need to open an inbound RTMP port for this setup. The steps below cover the server, access and firewall choices, YouTube settings, testing, and the checks needed before you trust the stream.
What you need before you start
- An AWS account and a Lightsail Linux instance. Lightsail offers Linux/Unix images including Ubuntu and Debian; its instance overview describes the service at AWS Lightsail Instances.
- A video source accessible to the instance. The source may be a file on the server or another input your chosen FFmpeg build can read.
- A YouTube channel with access to Live Control Room and a live stream configured there.
- An FFmpeg build that supports the input format, video and audio encoders, and output protocol you intend to use.
- Enough server capacity and network throughput for your chosen output. No Lightsail plan’s sustained encoding capacity is established here, so verify the actual workload on your chosen instance before relying on it.
This is an outbound push from Lightsail to YouTube. AWS says Lightsail’s firewall controls inbound traffic to the public IP and outbound traffic is allowed by default. IPv4 and IPv6 firewall rules are independent. See AWS’s Lightsail firewall documentation. Do not open a public inbound RTMP port merely to send a stream to YouTube.
Create and access the Lightsail instance
-
Choose a Linux image and create the instance
In the Lightsail console, create an instance and select a Linux/Unix image such as Ubuntu or Debian. Select a region and plan, then create the instance. AWS’s current walkthrough is Create a Lightsail instance. Choose the plan with the encode workload in mind, but do not assume a plan can sustain a particular resolution or bitrate until you test it.
-
Connect securely
Use Lightsail’s browser-based SSH or a standard SSH client. Limit inbound SSH access to your own source address where practical. You do not need to expose the stream key or an RTMP listener to the public internet.

Decide whether the VPS needs a stable public address
Lightsail’s default public IPv4 can change when an instance is stopped and started. Attach a static IPv4 if an external reference to the server must remain stable across that lifecycle; AWS explains the option at Create and attach a static IP to your Lightsail instance. A static IP is not required for the outbound YouTube stream itself.
Install and verify FFmpeg for your image
There is no single installation command that can safely be prescribed for every Lightsail Linux image and repository. Package names, versions, and enabled codecs and protocols can differ. Install FFmpeg using the package source appropriate to your selected distribution, then verify the binary before building a long-running service around it.
Check that your FFmpeg build can:
- Read the source file or input type you plan to use.
- Encode video in the codec you select and encode audio in AAC or MP3 if audio is part of the stream.
- Send output using the protocol you select, including RTMPS if you plan to use YouTube’s encrypted ingest route.
Do not infer RTMPS support just because a binary is called FFmpeg. Check the build’s capabilities and make a short connection test before scheduling an event.

Get the YouTube ingest URL and protect the stream key
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or select the live stream.
- Copy the server URL and stream key shown for that stream. Enter them in the FFmpeg output configuration; use the exact values displayed in Live Control Room rather than a guessed endpoint path.
- Treat the key like a password. Do not commit it to source control, paste it into a public script, or expose it in public logs. YouTube’s live stream settings guidance covers managing live stream settings. If the key is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube before streaming again.
Choose an output profile that fits the source and server
YouTube’s encoder guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS workflows, H.264, H.265, and AV1 video, up to 60 frames per second, and AAC or MP3 audio. For broad compatibility, a sensible starting choice is H.264 video with AAC audio and constant bitrate (CBR). Match the output resolution and frame rate to the source and to what your Lightsail instance can encode steadily.

For stereo audio, its advanced settings list 44.1 kHz sampling and 128 Kbps audio bitrate. These are platform recommendations, not proof that a particular VPS can encode and transmit the selected profile reliably.

Prefer RTMPS when your FFmpeg build supports it
YouTube says: “You can stream to YouTube Live with RTMPS, a secure extension to the popular RTMP streaming video protocol.” It recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport. Use the RTMPS server URL shown in Live Control Room and confirm your FFmpeg build can connect to it; do not assume every prebuilt binary supports it. YouTube explains the protocol at Encrypt your stream using RTMPS.
If your build cannot use RTMPS, resolve that build limitation or verify the alternative route you intend to use before the event. Do not describe an unencrypted RTMP connection as encrypted.

The correct FFmpeg command depends on the input, selected codecs, FFmpeg build, and exact ingest URL and stream key. Those details are not interchangeable, so a generic copy-and-paste command would risk giving you invalid flags or an insecure credential-handling pattern. Instead, construct the command for the verified binary and source you will use, with these elements:

- The input path or input source that FFmpeg can read.
- The chosen video codec and output resolution and frame rate.
- CBR output at the bitrate for the specific resolution, frame rate, and codec from YouTube’s current table.
- A two-second keyframe interval, without exceeding YouTube’s four-second limit.
- A supported audio codec and the intended audio settings, if the source includes audio.
- The RTMPS server URL and stream key from Live Control Room, if the build supports RTMPS.
Keep the key out of scripts that are committed to a repository and out of any logs that other people can read. After saving the configuration, run a short test with the actual input and profile rather than assuming that a syntactically valid command will perform adequately on the selected instance.
Test the stream before depending on it
- Start FFmpeg with a representative portion of the source, including normal audio and motion.
- Open the stream preview in YouTube Live Control Room and confirm that video appears and audio is present at the expected level.
- Check YouTube’s stream-health messages and FFmpeg’s output for dropped frames, connection failures, or encoding problems.
- Let the test run long enough to expose instability in the input, encode load, or network path. A brief successful connection does not establish that a longer event will remain healthy.
- Repeat the test after changing the instance plan, FFmpeg build, source format, output profile, or network setup.
YouTube recommends testing with representative audio and movement and monitoring stream health during the event. Use the current YouTube encoder guidance as the platform reference.

A VPS can run without your home computer, but the FFmpeg process, source, server, and network path still need operational attention. Decide how you will restart the process after a failure and how you will notice that the YouTube preview or stream health has changed. Test the recovery procedure rather than treating a successful manual start as proof of unattended reliability.

Common problems and what to check
| Symptom | Likely checks | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg cannot read the input | Input path, file permissions, file availability, and whether the build supports the input format. | Test the source independently and verify the required demuxer or input support in the installed build. |
| YouTube does not receive the stream | Exact server URL and key from Live Control Room; outbound connectivity; selected protocol support. | Re-enter the current ingest details and confirm the FFmpeg build supports the selected RTMP or RTMPS route. |
| RTMPS connection fails | Whether the FFmpeg build includes the required protocol and TLS support, and whether the URL is the RTMPS URL shown by YouTube. | Use a compatible build or validate a suitable alternative before the live event; do not claim the unencrypted route is protected. |
| Stream health reports instability | Whether the instance can sustain the selected encode workload, whether the outbound connection is stable, and whether the output settings match YouTube’s current guidance. | Test under representative load; if necessary, try a lower output profile and verify it again in Live Control Room. |
| Video appears but audio is missing or wrong | Input audio track, selected audio encoder, sampling rate, channel layout, and YouTube preview. | Verify the source audio and use an audio format supported by the build and YouTube’s current guidance. |
| The stream key may have leaked | Public scripts, source-control history, shared terminal output, or logs. | Replace or reset the key in YouTube Live Control Room and update the protected configuration. |
Costs and what to validate before a 24/7 run
A continuous stream can incur recurring Lightsail instance charges and other costs associated with the chosen service configuration. The reviewed AWS and YouTube guidance does not establish a current Lightsail price for a particular region or plan, nor the total cost or suitability of a 24/7 workload. Check current AWS pricing for your region and estimate the cost of the instance configuration you plan to keep running; include any other resources your setup actually uses.
Before leaving a stream unattended, verify the selected instance’s real encoding capacity and connection stability over a representative run, the restart and alerting arrangements, source availability, and the behavior of YouTube’s stream preview and health messages. A plan name or recommended YouTube bitrate alone cannot establish sustained performance.
