The setup is straightforward; whether a particular laptop can keep it running reliably depends on its hardware, cooling, power, settings and network. Test the complete setup before relying on a long broadcast.
Check that your channel can go live
Before preparing a long stream, confirm that live streaming is available on your YouTube channel. YouTube requires channel verification and no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. First-time live-stream activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it well ahead of your planned broadcast. YouTube also states that a streamer must be at least 16 years old. Build a looping scene in OBS
Add a local video and enable Loop
- Open OBS Studio and create a scene for the broadcast. Give it a recognizable name, such as “Documentary loop.”
- In the Sources panel, select + and choose Media Source. Create a new source and select the video file stored on the laptop.
- In the Media Source properties, enable Loop. This replays the selected file when playback reaches its end.
- Check the preview and audio. Add only overlays or other sources you actually need, then confirm that the video fills the canvas as intended.
OBS lists MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF and WebM among supported video formats. Its Media Source also offers hardware decoding when available; that option is off by default. Compatibility with a format does not mean the laptop can decode and stream it smoothly for hours. Read the OBS Media Sources guide.
Use a playlist only if you need multiple files
For one video, Media Source with Loop is the simplest route. For a playlist, OBS has a separate VLC Video source with playlist and loop-playlist behavior. It requires VLC to be installed; if OBS is 64-bit, install 64-bit VLC. The source and installation details are in OBS’s Media Sources guide.

Keep the scene light
Media resolution, browser sources, filters and scene complexity all consume resources. A high-resolution file scaled down in OBS can still require more work than using a source closer to the intended output size. Start with the video and essential elements only. OBS discusses these performance considerations in its streaming and recording guide.
Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room. Create or schedule a stream and choose the encoder workflow.
- In the stream setup, copy the stream key and enter it in OBS’s YouTube streaming settings. Keep the key private: anyone who has it may be able to send video to your stream.
- Start the stream from OBS, then check the Live Control Room preview and stream-health information before making the broadcast public.
YouTube’s encoder workflow supports broadcasts with sources such as overlays, external audio and video, and other production elements. Its setup and live requirements are described in YouTube’s encoder streaming guide.

Choose settings your laptop and connection can sustain
Start with a conservative output
Run an upload-speed test on the same connection you plan to use, then choose a quality that it can deliver reliably. YouTube’s current H.264 recommendations include these video bitrates:

These are YouTube recommendations, not a guarantee that your internet connection can sustain the stream. Leave headroom rather than choosing a bitrate that uses all available upload capacity. Check YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions because its recommendations may change.

Match the encoder requirements
- For RTMP or RTMPS, YouTube specifies H.264, H.265 (HEVC) or AV1 video, up to 60 fps, and constant bitrate (CBR).
- Use AAC or MP3 audio.
- Set a two-second keyframe interval; YouTube says it must not exceed four seconds.
- YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts the stream through its servers.
YouTube detects encoder resolution and frame rate by default in Live Control Room. A custom stream key can be used for manual resolution settings. Follow the current YouTube encoder settings if a label or available option differs in your version of OBS.
Lower the load if OBS struggles
If OBS reports rendering or encoding trouble, reduce the output resolution and frame rate, and remove unnecessary sources, filters or browser elements. Lower resolution reduces encoder load; fewer frames reduce rendering and encoding work. There is no single preset that makes every old laptop suitable. OBS explicitly cautions: “Having a compatible system does not guarantee that it is capable of streaming or recording using OBS Studio.” Its system requirements page is dated August 25, 2021; see OBS system requirements.

Test the whole chain before a long broadcast
- Connect the laptop to reliable power and use the strongest available internet connection.
- Run an unlisted test if appropriate. Use the actual video file, audio, overlays, output settings and connection you plan to use.
- Keep the test running long enough to reveal sustained problems, rather than checking only that the stream starts. Watch OBS for rendering or encoding issues and YouTube’s Live Control Room for stream health.
- Check whether playback loops as expected and whether sound, picture and timing remain acceptable. If anything falters, reduce output demands or simplify the scene and test again.
YouTube advises creators to test beforehand, choose quality the upload connection can support and monitor stream health. A laptop may stop streaming if it overheats, sleeps, loses power or loses its connection; how to prevent those problems depends on the particular device and network. No model, OS, temperature condition or upload speed is specified here, so no setup can be certified for a specific machine or promised to stay online continuously.
Respect copyright and YouTube’s live rules
Only stream video and audio you have the right to use, including music, narration, archival footage and images. A loop is still a live broadcast: YouTube requires live content to comply with its Community Guidelines and Terms of Service. Review its live-streaming guidance and the applicable copyright rules before broadcasting. Passing a technical test does not establish that you have permission to stream the content.
