You can run a Malayalam radio station on YouTube around the clock by sending a continuous audiovisual feed from an encoder such as OBS to YouTube Live. The essentials are an eligible channel, a private stream key, a stable internet connection, a visual your station is allowed to use, and confirmed rights for every recording and composition in the broadcast. For a do-it-yourself setup, keep the encoder and network equipment powered and monitored; YouTube does not guarantee that a stream will stay uninterrupted.
What you need before going live
- An eligible YouTube channel. YouTube says live streaming requires channel verification and no live-stream restrictions in the previous 90 days; it also sets a minimum age of 16 for live streaming. Check the current requirements and activation flow in YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance before scheduling a launch.
- An encoder and an audiovisual feed. An encoder such as OBS sends audio and video to YouTube using a server URL and stream key. Even for an audio-led station, prepare a visual feed—for example, authorized station artwork, a schedule, a presenter camera, or a permitted visual loop.
- Reliable upload, power, and oversight. The computer running the encoder, internet connection, and audio chain all need to remain available. YouTube advises sufficient outbound bandwidth and a reliable connection; allow roughly 20% upload headroom beyond the stream’s bitrate. A UPS may help bridge brief power interruptions, but its runtime depends on the connected equipment and load.
- Music and other content rights. Confirm permissions for the recordings and compositions, including live use and any archive or replay, in every territory the stream serves. The exact licensing route depends on the catalogue and territories.
How to set up a continuous YouTube radio stream
1. Verify the channel and prepare the program
Complete channel verification, check that the account can livestream, and allow time for any first-stream activation requirements. Assemble the station’s audio programming and an audiovisual layout that you have permission to use. Keep the stream key private: anyone with it may be able to send a feed to the channel.
2. Create a live stream and connect the encoder
- Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room. Create or select the live stream, following YouTube’s encoder setup flow.
- Copy the server URL and stream key shown for the stream into your encoder, such as OBS. Do not share the key publicly.
- Configure the encoder to send the station’s audio and visual feed, then connect it. Follow the Live Control Room prompts to start the broadcast.
3. Choose settings the connection can sustain
YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends RTMPS and lists RTMP/RTMPS support for H.264, H.265, and AV1 video; for RTMP/RTMPS, it lists AAC or MP3 audio. It recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds), 44.1 kHz stereo audio, and 128 kbps stereo audio. Use the full YouTube encoder settings and bitrate table for the resolution, frame rate, and codec you choose.

These are platform recommendations, not minimum requirements. A stable, lower-bitrate feed is preferable to a higher setting that your upload connection cannot sustain. Test with representative audio and visual motion, check stream health in Live Control Room, and leave upload headroom.
4. Test continuity and plan for archives
Run a test before the scheduled launch. Confirm that the audio is audible and correctly routed, the visual is present, and Live Control Room reports healthy delivery. Test the real operating setup—including the encoder, network, and power arrangements—and decide who will respond if the feed stops. Keep a local recording if the station needs an independent archive.

YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, while streams over 12 hours may not be captured. This is archive guidance, not a stated maximum permitted broadcast duration. Music rights: the key risk for a Malayalam radio stream
Do not assume that a radio broadcast license automatically covers a YouTube livestream or its replay. Check the rights for both sound recordings and compositions, and confirm that permissions cover online live streaming and archiving in each territory the stream serves. The specific permissions and licensing route cannot be determined without the station’s catalogue, operating country, and audience territories.

YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content, including copyrighted material. A match may result in a placeholder, interruption, or termination. YouTube also says that if you have licensed third-party content, you should ask its owner to add your channel to the Content ID allowlist. A license by itself may therefore not prevent an automated interruption. Read YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams.
YouTube’s livestream terms state that the provider represents it has the necessary rights for live content on Google services worldwide, including music licensing rights, and that applicable territory regulatory requirements are met. - Keep a rights log for songs, recordings, jingles, interviews, and other third-party material.
- Record the territories, uses, and time periods each permission covers, including replay or archive use.
- Where applicable, request Content ID allowlisting from the rights owner before broadcasting.
- Do not rely on a successful test stream as proof that all rights are cleared; automated matches can arise during the live broadcast.
Keeping a DIY stream running—and recovering when it stops
A 24/7 broadcast depends on every part of the local chain: audio source, encoder computer, power, router, and internet service. YouTube recommends adequate outbound bandwidth and a reliable connection in its streaming tips. Use a wired connection where practical, keep the encoder and audio source configured for unattended operation, and have someone able to check the stream and respond to faults. No particular hardware arrangement guarantees continuous uptime.
- Feed ends or drops: Check the encoder connection, stream health, internet access, and power. Reconnect the encoder and follow Live Control Room’s prompts.
- Video or audio stutters: Check upload capacity and leave about 20% headroom. Reduce resolution, frame rate, or bitrate if the connection cannot sustain the selected settings.
- Audio is missing or distorted: Check the encoder’s audio input, routing, and level, then verify the output in a representative test.
- Live stream is interrupted after a content match: Review the rights for the identified material and contact the rights owner about permissions and Content ID allowlisting where applicable.
- No YouTube replay appears: A stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured. Use shorter sessions when the platform archive matters and keep an independent local recording.

YouTube for Artists reported that over 30% of daily logged-in YouTube viewers, on average, watched live content in Q2 2025.
