YouTube says streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all, and DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable on very long streams. If the replay matters, plan shorter sessions and keep a local recording.
Before you set up OBS
- Check livestream eligibility. YouTube says a channel must be verified and must not have had a live-stream restriction in the previous 90 days. Its getting-started guidance also says creators must be at least 16. Check the current requirements at YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility page.
- Plan for power, network and supervision. A continuous OBS broadcast depends on the Mac, internet connection, power and content source continuing to work. The available guidance does not establish a universal Mac model, macOS setting or unattended-restart configuration that guarantees this. Test your actual setup rather than assuming reconnect options make it unattended.
- Decide how you will preserve the program. YouTube recommends keeping a local archive backup. Confirm the local recording is being written and growing during a test; do not rely on a YouTube replay as the only copy.
Connect OBS to a YouTube encoder stream
- In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or select an encoder stream. YouTube’s workflow provides a stream URL and stream key for the encoder. See YouTube’s encoder setup guide.
- In OBS, open the stream settings. Select YouTube if it is available in the service list, or enter YouTube’s server URL and stream key manually. Treat the stream key like a password: do not show it on screen or share it publicly.
- Set OBS to use the video and audio sources for the program you intend to broadcast. Start streaming from OBS and wait for the feed to appear in the Live Control Room preview. Depending on the event workflow, you may also need to bring the event live in YouTube Studio.
- Check the preview for both picture and sound before announcing the stream. Once live, monitor the Live Control Room’s stream-health indicators and messages.
OBS and YouTube guidance cover the encoder workflow, but do not establish current menu labels for a particular macOS or OBS release. Names and layout can differ by version; the essential settings are the YouTube URL and key, encoder output, sources, and a verified Studio preview.
Choose stable video and audio settings
Start with a quality level your upload connection can sustain consistently. A lower resolution or frame rate is preferable to a nominally sharper feed that repeatedly drops frames. YouTube recommends RTMP or RTMPS, H.264 video, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval; it says not to exceed four seconds. Its H.264 examples include 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 4 Mbps for 240p–720p at 30 fps. These are recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular connection or Mac will deliver a stable stream. Consult the current YouTube encoder settings and bitrate guidance.
- Match bitrate to the connection. Test at the intended resolution and frame rate with realistic movement and audio. If the connection cannot sustain the chosen bitrate, reduce it and test again.
- Set keyframes to two seconds. Do not use an interval above four seconds, per YouTube’s guidance.
- Check audio independently. Listen to the Studio preview for clipping, silence, unwanted desktop sound or a source that stops when the Mac changes state.
- Watch stream health after going live. A clean preview at startup does not prove the connection will remain stable over a long session.
Understand the 12-hour archive and DVR limits
YouTube says a live stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all; it does not say every stream over that duration is necessarily lost. If a dependable YouTube archive is important, keep sessions below 12 hours and record locally as a separate safeguard. Read YouTube’s live-stream archive guidance.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Viewer rewind is a separate issue. YouTube says DVR capabilities may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours, and viewers cannot seek back to before the stream began. A continuous live feed therefore should not be presented as a promise of one complete, rewindable replay. See YouTube’s DVR guidance.
Keep a long-running broadcast under observation
- Monitor video and audio quality, stream health and YouTube’s messages throughout the broadcast.
- Verify the local archive file is being created and continues to grow.
- If a backup encoder is part of your setup, test failover before relying on it. YouTube’s example is to stop the primary encoder or disconnect its Ethernet cable, then confirm playback moves to the backup encoder. Follow YouTube’s live-streaming tips.
- A wired Ethernet connection can be useful where available. A compatible USB-C-to-Gigabit-Ethernet adapter may help a Mac without an Ethernet port, but it cannot prevent ISP outages, power loss or encoder failure.
OBS identifies dropped frames and intermittent disconnects as possible signs of network trouble between the computer and ingest server; a bitrate higher than the connection can sustain is one possible cause. Reduce bitrate and test again if the feed is unstable. See OBS’s stream connection troubleshooting guide.

Troubleshoot common failures
- YouTube receives no signal: Check that OBS is streaming, the selected service or server URL is correct, and the stream key matches the selected YouTube event. Recheck the Studio preview before taking the event live.
- Dropped frames or repeated disconnects: Check the network connection and lower the bitrate if necessary. Run another test at the target quality; do not assume a brief successful connection proves it can hold for a long session.
- Picture works but audio is missing or wrong: Check the active OBS audio source and levels, then confirm the sound in YouTube’s preview before going live.
- The YouTube replay is incomplete or absent: For a stream exceeding 12 hours, YouTube warns capture may not occur at all. Use the local recording as your archive safeguard and schedule shorter sessions when a YouTube replay is important.
- Viewers cannot rewind as expected: DVR may be limited or unavailable on streams longer than 12 hours, and it cannot take viewers to a point before the stream started.
- The stream stops while the Mac is unattended: Investigate power, network, the Mac and the content source. The setup guidance does not establish a universal macOS sleep or restart procedure that guarantees uninterrupted operation; test the exact machine and setup.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you want a prerecorded program to stay live on YouTube without leaving a Mac running, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, then go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly service is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos and streams to YouTube; it is not a camera-based live broadcast.
