You can run recorded college events as a continuous YouTube Live stream from a verified channel using either a locally operated encoder or a cloud playback service. Before scheduling anything, clear the rights to the recording and every element it contains—especially music and performances. YouTube’s own guidance documents both hardware and cloud approaches; neither a specific device nor a particular service is required.
How do I run a 24/7 YouTube Live stream with prerecorded videos?
For an ongoing channel, prepare a rights-cleared playlist, choose where playback will run, configure the YouTube ingest, then test monitoring and recovery before leaving it unattended. A continuous feed is still a live stream: it needs an eligible channel, an encoder or hosted playback service, a stable connection where the encoder runs, and an operator responsible for the stream.
- Check channel eligibility. YouTube says the channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. Its setup guidance also says a live streamer must be at least 16. Confirm the current status in YouTube Studio before scheduling. See YouTube’s live streaming tips.
- Choose a playback method. YouTube’s encoder guide names the AJA HELO Plus with PlayToStream for scheduled prerecorded playback on dedicated hardware and describes Gyre as a cloud-based 24/7 prerecorded-video tool. These are examples, not requirements. A software encoder may also suit a smaller operation. Check each provider’s current support and operating requirements before committing.
- Build and review the playlist. Use only recordings whose rights permit transmission on YouTube Live. Keep a record of event name, source file, recording owner, presenter and performer releases, music and clip sources, permitted territories and duration, and whether live transmission and archived replay are authorized.
- Configure the stream. YouTube recommends RTMPS. Its encoder settings guidance supports H.264 video, constant bitrate encoding, and a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds. Choose resolution and bitrate from YouTube’s current settings table and the actual upload capacity available to the encoder. Consult YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions rather than assuming one bitrate fits every resolution or network.
- Allow network headroom. YouTube recommends about 20% bandwidth above the total stream bitrate. Shared campus or office networks can reduce the bandwidth available to the encoder. If you configure primary and backup encoders, include the bandwidth needed by both streams.
- Test before going unattended. YouTube recommends setting up at least two hours ahead and starting the encoder at least 15 minutes before the scheduled start. Check the Live Control Room preview, confirm the stream is accessible from the channel and watch pages, and monitor audio and video. If you create a local archive, check that file too.
- Test recovery and handoffs. Where backup-encoder failover is available, test it by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet and confirming that playback moves to the backup. Document who can access YouTube Studio and the encoder, who monitors overnight or between events, and who responds to a dropped stream or a rights claim.
What encoder do I need for a continuous YouTube stream?
The best fit depends on where the institution wants playback to run, who will operate it, and what happens if the stream or connection fails. YouTube’s examples establish that both dedicated hardware and cloud playback are possible, not that one is universally more reliable or less expensive. Current prices, comparative reliability, India availability, and independent performance results are not established by that guidance; compare current support, scheduling controls, recovery behavior, account access, and total operating cost directly.

A local device can suit an institution that wants an on-site hardware workflow and direct operational control. Hosted playback can suit a team that wants scheduling handled in a provider’s environment. Verify current compatibility, service terms, and support for the specific workflow before choosing.

Can I stream recorded college events on YouTube Live?
Yes, provided the channel is eligible and the college has the necessary rights for the recording and all incorporated material. A lecture, festival, convocation, cultural program, or sports event is not automatically cleared merely because it took place on campus or was recorded by the college. YouTube’s livestream terms and conditions place responsibility on the provider to hold necessary rights for live content worldwide, including music licensing rights, and to comply with applicable law and territorial requirements.
For each recording, verify permission for the actual uses planned: continuous live transmission, the territories in which it will be available, and retention as an archive. A speaker’s permission to appear at an in-person event, for example, should not be treated as proof that every recording, music track, or third-party clip can be streamed and archived.

Can I use copyrighted music in a college event livestream?
Do not assume music that was acceptable in an ordinary video—or licensed for an ordinary video—is cleared for a live stream. YouTube says a stream may be terminated following a copyright or Community Guidelines strike, and Content ID claims may be made after a stream ends if it is archived. Its Creator Music usage details say the video licenses described there do not cover live streams.
Before adding a recording to the schedule, identify music in performances, background audio, introductions, and embedded clips, then confirm the necessary permissions for the planned live and archived uses. IPRS has published a tariff document titled Live Streaming of Online Events of Music. It may help identify a rights-contact route, but the document alone does not determine what a specific college must clear or whether its terms and rates remain current. Ask the relevant rights holders or the institution’s legal adviser about the particular recording.

Do I need permission to replay a recorded college performance on YouTube?
Usually, the college should establish permission for the recording and each protected element before streaming it. YouTube’s terms make the provider responsible for the rights it needs; a campus setting, educational purpose, or noncommercial operation does not by itself establish an exception to those contractual obligations.
The India Copyright Office’s Copyright Act, 1957, Chapter XI includes a narrow provision concerning certain bona fide religious ceremonies and official ceremonies held by government bodies. It does not establish a general exception for college events and should not be extended to ordinary cultural festivals, lectures, performances, or sports recordings. For a specific event, have the institution’s legal adviser assess the content, permissions, and applicable law.

How should a college operate the stream safely?
- Maintain a rights register. Tie each playlist entry to its owner, releases, music and clip sources, territory and duration permissions, and live-versus-archive authorization. Hold items with unresolved rights out of the schedule.
- Assign named operational roles. Ensure the team knows who can access the channel and playback system, who checks the feed during unattended periods, and who can respond to a failure or rights notice.
- Keep a tested fallback. Record the recovery steps and test them before relying on them. If using dual encoders, verify both failover behavior and the additional network capacity.
- Review scheduled material periodically. Confirm that playlist entries still have the intended permissions and that the stream’s preview, audio, and video remain correct after changes.
