How to Run a 4K 60fps YouTube Live Playlist with FFmpeg’s Concat Demuxer

A reliable FFmpeg concat-demuxer workflow for YouTube Live starts by checking every file: stream copy only works when the inputs are compatible.

You can use FFmpeg’s concat demuxer to send a playlist to YouTube Live, but only when the files already have compatible streams. The demuxer joins packet streams; it does not turn mixed-resolution or mixed-frame-rate clips into 4K at 60 fps. Inspect and, if necessary, normalize the files first, then concatenate them and send a correctly configured real-time stream to YouTube.

The commands below assume a recent FFmpeg build, local files you trust, H.264 video with AAC audio for broad ingest compatibility, and an RTMP or RTMPS YouTube stream URL. Check YouTube’s current encoder settings before a long broadcast; supported codecs and recommended settings can change.

1. Check whether the files can be concatenated as-is

The concat demuxer reads a playlist as though its files form one input. It adjusts timestamps, but FFmpeg requires the files to have the same streams, codecs, and time bases. Differences in dimensions, frame rate, audio layout, or other stream properties can cause errors or unreliable transitions. The official ffprobe documentation also warns that incorrect duration metadata can produce artifacts or gaps.

Inspect every file before building the playlist. This command reports stream type, codec, dimensions, frame rate, time base, audio layout, and duration for one file:

ffprobe -v error -show_entries format=duration:stream=index,codec_type,codec_name,width,height,r_frame_rate,avg_frame_rate,time_base,sample_rate,channels,channel_layout -of json "clip1.mp4"

Run it for each playlist item and compare the results. Confirm that the video streams are already 3840×2160 and 60 fps if that is the intended output; a filename or container label does not prove the actual stream properties. Check audio too: files with different stream counts or incompatible audio parameters are not safe concat-demuxer inputs.

For a shell that supports it, you can inspect a set of files with a loop:

for f in clip1.mp4 clip2.mp4 clip3.mp4; do
  echo "$f"
  ffprobe -v error -show_entries format=duration:stream=index,codec_type,codec_name,width,height,r_frame_rate,avg_frame_rate,time_base,sample_rate,channels,channel_layout -of json "$f"
done

This only reports metadata. If streams differ, choose a preprocessing encode or a filter-based concat workflow; do not try to fix the mismatch by adding an output frame-rate flag to a stream-copy command.

2. Choose stream copy or normalization

Use stream copy only for already matching inputs

With -c copy, FFmpeg copies encoded packets without decoding and re-encoding. It is fast and avoids another lossy generation, but cannot resize, change frame rate, apply filters, or normalize incompatible streams. Setting an output frame rate while copying does not make the packets conform to that frame rate. See the FFmpeg documentation for stream handling and options.

Normalize mismatched clips before concatenating

If the source files vary, encode them to a common format before using the demuxer. That means choosing a common resolution, frame rate, video codec, audio codec, stream layout, and compatible timing. The appropriate conversion depends on the material: scaling a lower-resolution documentary to 3840×2160 creates a 4K-sized output, not detail that was absent from the original. Frame-rate conversion can also change motion cadence. FFmpeg’s FAQ recommends the concat filter when streams need re-encoding or filtering as part of concatenation.

Preprocessing costs compute and can reduce quality through another encode; it also adds a preparation step. If clips cannot be made into compatible packet streams, use the concat filter and encode the resulting output rather than forcing the demuxer.

3. Create an FFconcat playlist

For compatible files, create a text file named playlist.txt:

ffconcat version 1.0
file 'clip1.mp4'
file 'clip2.mp4'
file 'clip3.mp4'

Keep the playlist and media in the same directory if you use relative paths. The paths must match the actual filenames. If filenames contain apostrophes or unusual characters, use valid FFconcat quoting or rename the files to simple names.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

FFmpeg’s concat demuxer applies safe-path checks by default. Relative paths under the playlist’s directory are the simplest option. For trusted, locally generated playlists that need absolute paths or other paths rejected by safe mode, add -safe 0 before the playlist input. Use that only when you control the playlist contents: a playlist can refer to files beyond the intended media folder.

4. Send the playlist to YouTube Live

Create or select a YouTube Live stream in YouTube Studio and copy its stream URL and stream key. Treat the key like a password; do not publish it, commit it to a script repository, or include it in logs or screenshots. Set the stream’s resolution and latency options in YouTube Studio as appropriate; YouTube identifies 4K as a normal-latency path in its streaming tips.

For already compatible H.264/AAC files, this example copies the existing streams and paces file reading in real time:

ffmpeg -re -f concat -safe 0 -i playlist.txt -c copy -f flv "rtmps://YOUR_YOUTUBE_INGEST_URL/YOUR_STREAM_KEY"

Replace the URL with the ingest URL and key shown for your YouTube stream. This example uses -safe 0 because it assumes trusted playlist contents and paths that require it. If your playlist uses simple relative paths that pass FFmpeg’s default checks, omit -safe 0. The -re option paces file input in real time; it does not resize video, convert frame rate, or alter codecs.

The command assumes that the concatenated streams are already acceptable to YouTube and that the selected ingest URL accepts RTMPS. If your files are not H.264/AAC, use an ingest-supported codec or re-encode instead of copying. YouTube’s encoder page lists RTMP/RTMPS and H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1; verify its live table for the codec and settings currently available to your workflow.

Looping the playlist

To repeat the sequence indefinitely, FFmpeg provides -stream_loop -1 for input looping. Input-option placement and behavior can depend on the FFmpeg version and input arrangement. A reasonable form to test on your build is:

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -f concat -safe 0 -i playlist.txt -c copy -f flv "rtmps://YOUR_YOUTUBE_INGEST_URL/YOUR_STREAM_KEY"

Verify that the loop returns cleanly from the last file to the first on a short test before relying on it. A bad duration or incompatible boundary may create a gap or artifact even if the initial transition appears correct.

When you need to encode the outgoing stream

If inputs are normalized enough for concatenation but still need an outgoing encode, choose an encoder available in your FFmpeg build and set the actual output dimensions and frame rate. For an H.264/AAC path, the following is an example configuration, not a universal quality preset:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
ffmpeg -re -f concat -safe 0 -i playlist.txt
  -vf "scale=3840:2160,fps=60"
  -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -b:v 35M -maxrate 35M -bufsize 70M
  -g 120 -keyint_min 120 -sc_threshold 0
  -c:a aac -b:a 192k -ar 48000
  -f flv "rtmps://YOUR_YOUTUBE_INGEST_URL/YOUR_STREAM_KEY"

At 60 fps, a GOP of 120 frames targets a two-second keyframe interval. The scale and fps filters make the output dimensions and frame rate explicit, but scaling can only enlarge the source; it cannot restore missing detail. The example’s veryfast preset trades encoding efficiency for lower compute demand. Confirm that the machine can encode without falling behind and that the resulting audio and video are acceptable before using this for a long stream.

5. Match YouTube’s current 4K60 ingest guidance

YouTube’s encoder settings page retrieved in 2026 lists 4K/2160p at 60 fps, a two-second recommended keyframe interval with a four-second maximum, and CBR. Its table gives 10–40 Mbps for AV1/HEVC and 35 Mbps recommended for H.264. These are live platform recommendations, not guarantees; check the current YouTube table and the codec-specific column before broadcasting, particularly if the page has changed or is localized differently.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

The H.264 example sets a 35 Mbps video bitrate with a 35 Mbps maximum. Audio adds to the total upload requirement. YouTube recommends upload capacity with 20% room beyond the combined primary and backup stream bitrate; account for all streams you send, not just video. A variable or insufficient home connection can cause dropped frames even when FFmpeg settings are correct.

  • Use CBR behavior for the outgoing stream as required by the current encoder guidance; check the chosen encoder’s options for how it implements rate control.
  • Keep keyframes two seconds apart when possible and do not exceed YouTube’s stated four-second maximum.
  • Test representative movement and audio, not only a static opening frame.

6. Test the stream in YouTube Live Control Room

Start with a short private or unlisted test rather than a long public broadcast. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, confirm that the incoming preview appears, the video is recognized at the intended resolution and frame rate, audio is present and synchronized, and stream health remains acceptable. YouTube explicitly advises: “Make sure that you test before you start your live stream.”

Check scene changes and the transition between every pair of files, plus the playlist’s final-to-first boundary if looping. A stream that reaches YouTube is not necessarily a clean 4K60 stream: verify the received signal and playback quality, and allow time for YouTube processing before judging the final playback rendition.

7. Troubleshoot common failures

Concat reports mismatched streams or fails at a clip boundary

Cause: The inputs differ in stream layout, codec, time base, resolution, frame rate, or audio properties. Fix: Compare each file’s ffprobe output. Normalize clips to matching stream properties or use a filter-based concat workflow with re-encoding.

There is a gap, jump, or artifact between clips

Cause: Inaccurate duration metadata, timestamp discontinuities, or incompatible boundaries can disrupt demuxer timestamp adjustment. Fix: Check reported durations and inspect the transition in a test output. Correct or re-encode problematic media; do not assume the playlist order alone guarantees seamless timing.

The output is not actually 4K or 60 fps

Cause: Stream copy preserves the source packets; an output option cannot transform them. Fix: Confirm source dimensions and frame rate with ffprobe. If conversion is needed, apply explicit scaling and frame-rate conversion in an encode, while recognizing that upscaling does not add source detail.

  • What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.

YouTube does not accept the stream or shows a codec warning

Cause: The copied streams may use a codec or profile unsupported by the selected ingest path. Fix: Check YouTube’s current codec guidance and FFmpeg’s input stream information. Re-encode to a currently supported ingest format rather than assuming the container determines codec compatibility.

Stream health reports dropped frames or buffering

Cause: Upload bandwidth may not cover the total bitrate with sufficient headroom, or the computer may not encode quickly enough. Fix: Check the encoder’s logs and system load, lower the outgoing bitrate if necessary, and measure available upload capacity under realistic network conditions. YouTube recommends 20% additional capacity beyond primary and backup bitrate totals.

The stream key is rejected or the feed does not start

Cause: A mistyped or outdated key, incorrect ingest URL, or inactive Live Control Room session. Fix: Copy the current ingest details from the intended YouTube stream, check that the live event is ready to receive input, and keep the key private.

8. Copyright, reused material, and documentary playlists

FFmpeg’s ability to transmit a file does not grant rights to stream it. Use footage, music, and narration you own or are licensed to broadcast on YouTube, and check that any license covers the intended territory, duration, and live use. Repeatedly looping footage does not itself establish originality or rights. Review YouTube’s applicable copyright and monetization rules for your channel before running a long playlist; a technically healthy stream can still receive a claim, restriction, or other platform action.
