YouTube says streams longer than 12 hours may not be archived, so keep a separate local recording, test the full setup, and clear rights for every song and other third-party item. Choose a workflow that fits the church
YouTube’s encoder workflow lets the church send recorded services as a live stream. It supports a production setup with overlays or external audio/video equipment, but those additions are not required just to stream existing recordings. Start with equipment already available, test it, and add hardware only if a real production need calls for it.
For a continuous schedule, plan successive live sessions with handoffs instead of relying on a single stream to run indefinitely. That approach follows YouTube’s archive guidance: streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, while streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured. Keep a separate local recording as well.
Another route is a cloud service that loops uploaded recordings without leaving a church computer running. The DIY workflow below gives the church direct control of the encoder and recording; the cloud option is described after it.

Prepare the channel, connection, and recordings
Check live-stream eligibility
Use a verified YouTube channel with live streaming enabled and no active live-streaming restriction. YouTube’s current live-stream setup guidance sets a minimum age of 16 for streaming. Check the channel’s eligibility before planning a public launch; a restriction can prevent the encoder workflow from starting.
Measure upload capacity at the church
Base the connection plan on tested outbound upload performance at the location and at the hours the stream will run—not a download-speed result. YouTube recommends approximately 20% upload-bandwidth headroom beyond the combined bitrate of the primary and backup streams. For example, if configured primary and backup streams together use 10 Mbps, plan for about 12 Mbps of available upload capacity. Treat that as a planning margin, not a guarantee of stable service.
Check whether the connection has data limits and whether a backup connection is available. If using encoder failover, include both primary and backup bitrates in the capacity calculation. Test the connection under the intended streaming conditions before relying on it.

Organize files and local storage
Prepare the service recordings in the order they should play and confirm that the files play correctly in the chosen encoder. Keep a local archive on storage separate from the streaming process where practical. During a test, verify that the recording file continues to grow; do not assume a recording is being saved just because the live feed is running.
Set a practical retention and backup routine for the church’s needs. Storage capacity depends on the recordings’ resolution, bitrate, and how long copies must be retained, so estimate from the actual files rather than choosing a drive size by guesswork.
Create and start an encoder stream
- Open YouTube Studio and Live Control Room. Create a live stream and choose the encoder workflow. Set the stream details and schedule the session as needed for the church’s viewing plan.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key. Enter them in the encoder’s YouTube streaming settings. Treat the key like a password: do not publish or share it unnecessarily, and reset it if it is compromised.
- Load the recorded service. Configure the encoder to play the prepared recording or sequence of recordings. If the church uses overlays or external audio/video equipment, include them in the test rather than assuming they will behave correctly when live.
- Start the encoder feed and check the preview. In Live Control Room, confirm that YouTube receives the signal and inspect picture and sound before making the stream public or beginning the scheduled session.
- Start the YouTube live event. Once the preview is correct, start the stream in Live Control Room. Confirm the public watch page and check playback on a phone as well as the production screen.
- Record locally and monitor. Confirm that the local file is being written and that audio and video remain usable. Keep an operator responsible for watching the feed and responding to encoder, connection, or YouTube alerts.
Schedule sessions and preserve the archive
Build the 24/7 schedule as successive sessions, with an orderly handoff between them. Where a YouTube archive is needed, keep each session below 12 hours: YouTube says longer streams may not be captured, not that they will always fail to archive. A separate local recording protects against relying on a platform archive alone.

Before launching the schedule, test the entire path: encoder output, Live Control Room preview, watch-page playback, mobile playback, local recording integrity, and any configured failover. YouTube advises monitoring rather than treating the setup as unattended. For a handoff, assign responsibility for ending one session and starting the next, then verify the new feed and archive recording.
Clear music and other rights before going live
The church is responsible for having the rights needed to use and stream its content, including music licensing rights, and for complying with applicable law where it streams. Recording a service at church does not automatically grant rights to every song, backing track, lyric display, guest-speaker excerpt, or third-party video within it. Review each recording and remove or replace material the church is not authorized to use.

If the church has licensed music, the relevant rights holder may need to allowlist the channel through Content ID so the live feed is not interrupted. Account for YouTube monetization rules
Do not assume a looped archive of repeated services will qualify for monetization. On July 15, 2025, YouTube renamed its “repetitious content” policy as “inauthentic content” and clarified that repetitive or mass-produced material is ineligible for monetization under that policy. This does not establish that every repeated sermon stream violates the policy; it does mean the church should check current channel eligibility and policy status and avoid forecasting revenue from the stream without doing so. Keep the stream’s purpose, editorial context, and channel presentation authentic.

Nepal’s National Broadcasting Act, 2049 (1992/93), in the Nepal Law Commission’s official repository, includes licensing language for broadcasting programmes and discusses applications for broadcasting within Nepal by satellite, cable, or other communications media. The statute source does not resolve whether a church-run YouTube-only stream is covered, whether related regulations change the scope, or whether a religious organization has a distinct rule. Do not assume either that a licence is definitely required or that online streaming is exempt.
Before launch, ask Nepal’s Department of Information and Broadcasting or a Nepal-qualified legal adviser about the exact service: a church-run YouTube channel continuously streaming prerecorded worship services. Describe the platform and format precisely so the answer addresses the church’s actual plan.

Troubleshoot common failures
- YouTube does not accept the stream: Recheck channel verification and live-stream eligibility, confirm there is no active restriction, and verify the stream URL and key in the encoder. Reset the key if it may have been exposed.
- The preview buffers, drops, or looks unstable: Test outbound upload performance at the church during the intended hours. Recalculate capacity with YouTube’s approximately 20% headroom recommendation beyond combined primary and backup bitrate, and check whether another upload is consuming the connection.
- The live feed is interrupted by a copyright match: Stop transmitting the matched material. Review rights for the recording’s music and other third-party elements; if music is licensed, ask the relevant owner whether the channel must be allowlisted through Content ID.
- A long session has no YouTube archive: YouTube says streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured. Use successive sessions under 12 hours when an archive is needed and maintain a separate local recording.
- The local archive is missing or incomplete: Check that local recording was enabled and that the target storage had space. During the next test, verify that the file grows while streaming and that the completed file plays back.
- The next scheduled session does not take over: Treat each transition as an operational handoff. Confirm that the outgoing session ended, the next encoder feed is reaching Live Control Room, and the new watch page plays before leaving the stream unattended.
