Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesTo run your own educational animations as a continuous YouTube livestream, send a playlist or video through a YouTube-compatible encoder and plan how you will monitor it and preserve replays. YouTube says streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all, so a single uninterrupted day-long broadcast is a poor choice if you need a YouTube archive. For a replay, use broadcasts shorter than 12 hours and keep local recordings.
What you need before going live
- A YouTube channel that is verified and has no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours. The person livestreaming must be at least 16; YouTube’s current guidance describes additional safeguards for younger participants. Check YouTube’s encoder setup requirements.
- Your finished animation files and a playlist or other playback plan. Check that the content is appropriate for your intended audience and that you have rights for the animation, music, voices, fonts and other assets.
- An encoder: software running on a computer or standalone hardware. YouTube supports both, but its general guidance does not establish that any particular encoder is reliable for unattended 24/7 operation. Check a device’s sustained-operation and compatibility documentation before buying it.
- A stable internet upload connection appropriate for your chosen resolution and bitrate, plus a way to monitor the stream and respond if it stops.
Set up the YouTube livestream
- Enable livestreaming. In YouTube Studio, follow the live-streaming activation prompts. Allow up to 24 hours for first-time activation.
- Create or schedule the broadcast. In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live, then create or schedule a stream. Set its audience accurately; if the animation is directed to children, designate it as made for kids.
- Copy the connection details. In Live Control Room, copy the stream URL and stream key into the encoder’s server and stream-key fields. Treat the key like a password: anyone who has it may be able to send a feed to your channel.
- Configure and start the encoder. Choose the video and audio settings described below, load the animation or playlist, and start sending the feed. YouTube creates a watch page once the encoder starts sending content. For a scheduled event, check the preview in Live Control Room before going live.
- Verify the result. Check the preview, stream health, audio and picture, and confirm viewers can open the watch page. Do not assume that a feed is working just because the encoder says it is connected.
Choose encoder settings that suit your connection
YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends RTMPS, constant-bitrate encoding and a two-second keyframe interval; do not set the keyframe interval above four seconds. YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 video encoding support for RTMP/RTMPS, and AAC or MP3 audio. See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions.
- Resolution and bitrate: Pick values the upload connection can sustain reliably. Higher resolution needs more upload capacity; test the actual animation, including its audio and movement, rather than judging from a static screen.
- Protocol: Use RTMPS where the encoder offers it.
- Rate control: Use constant bitrate (CBR) as YouTube recommends.
- Keyframes: Set an interval of two seconds, and do not exceed four seconds.
- Codec: Choose a supported video codec your encoder and workflow can handle. Codec support alone does not establish that a particular device can operate continuously.
- Audio: Use AAC or MP3 and check that dialogue, songs and other audio are clear and not clipped.
Choose software or standalone hardware
| Path | What it involves | What to check for a long-running feed |
|---|---|---|
| Software encoder | Encoder software sends the animation to YouTube from a computer. | The computer, encoder and network must remain available. Check local recording, restart or recovery options, and test the exact playlist and settings. The YouTube guidance does not give a universal reliability rating for software encoders. |
| Standalone hardware encoder | A dedicated device sends the feed to YouTube. | Confirm compatibility, supported formats, sustained-operation guidance, recording options and recovery behavior from the manufacturer. YouTube supports hardware encoders generally but does not identify a model as safe for unattended 24/7 use. |
Neither path removes the need to test and monitor the broadcast. Professional hardware is an option for production needs, not a requirement for every creator.
Plan around YouTube’s 12-hour archive limit
YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, while streams over 12 hours may not be captured at all. It also notes that DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable after 12 hours. If a replay matters, do not depend on one uninterrupted 24/7 broadcast to create it. See YouTube’s live-stream archiving guidance and DVR guidance.

Use shorter broadcasts when you need replays
Schedule or restart broadcasts at intervals shorter than 12 hours, and retain local recordings as a backup. Test how each new segment begins, including the transition from one animation or playlist item to the next. Shorter segments make the archive goal more practical, but they add handoff work and may interrupt viewer continuity.
Do not assume a seamless automatic handoff
YouTube’s general documentation does not establish a universal restart tool or guarantee a gap-free transition between segments. Verify the behavior of your encoder and any automation you use, and plan who or what will notice a stalled feed and act on it.

Test and monitor before relying on the stream
YouTube recommends setting up encoders at least two hours before a scheduled event and starting them at least 15 minutes ahead. Test with a private or unlisted broadcast before launching publicly. Its livestreaming tips recommend checking stream health, testing representative audio and movement, confirming local recordings are growing, and testing failover if a backup encoder is part of the setup.
- Watch the Live Control Room preview and confirm the correct animation, audio and audience setting.
- Confirm the watch page is available and that the stream health is acceptable.
- Check that local recording is actually being written and growing, if you are using one.
- If you have a backup encoder, deliberately test the failover rather than waiting for an outage.
- For an overnight or continuous broadcast, arrange an operator or a tested automation path to respond to a stalled feed, dropped connection or failed transition.
Set the audience and understand kids-content limits
If your animations are directed to children, YouTube requires you to designate them as made for kids. Child-oriented characters, activities, songs and stories are among the factors YouTube identifies. The decision depends on the actual content and audience; do not choose a different setting simply to retain features. Read YouTube’s audience-setting guidance and its explanation of how to determine whether content is made for kids. YouTube warns that inaccurate designation can have platform or legal consequences and says its help page is not legal advice.

Made-for-kids streams have fewer engagement and monetization features. YouTube disables live chat, comments, notifications, personalized ads, Super Chat and Super Stickers, along with memberships, merchandise and ticketing, cards and end screens, and some playback and saving features. It does not serve personalized ads on kids content, though contextual ads may appear. Live ads are not guaranteed in every slot, and monetization remains subject to YouTube Partner Program eligibility and policies. See YouTube’s live-stream monetization guidance and YouTube’s monetization overview.
Looping does not by itself establish that content meets monetization rules. YouTube’s July 2025 TeamYouTube explanation said the inauthentic-content clarification includes mass-produced or repetitive content and reiterated that YPP requires original and authentic content. Make sure a looped broadcast consists of substantive original animation rather than relying on repetition as a substitute for original work. The operative requirements are YouTube’s current monetization policies; the TeamYouTube explanation is available here.

Clear rights for the stream and its archive
YouTube’s livestream terms say the provider must have the rights needed to use the live content worldwide on Google services, including applicable music licensing rights, and must follow applicable laws and guidelines. Check permissions for every incorporated asset and confirm they cover both the live feed and any saved archive in the territories where viewers may access it. A license for a song or animation element may have limits that do not cover livestreaming or replay.
Common problems and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause or constraint | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| The encoder cannot start a livestream. | Live streaming is not enabled, first-time activation is still processing, the channel is not verified, or a live-stream restriction applies. | Check Studio eligibility and activation status; allow up to 24 hours for initial activation. |
| The stream does not appear in Live Control Room. | The encoder may have the wrong stream URL or key, or may not be sending a feed. | Recheck the server and key fields in the encoder and confirm it is actively sending. Keep the key private. |
| Playback is unstable or stream health is poor. | The upload connection may not sustain the chosen resolution and bitrate. | Test the same type of animation and audio expected in production, then choose settings the connection can sustain consistently. |
| A long stream has no YouTube replay. | Streams over 12 hours may not be captured at all. | Use broadcasts shorter than 12 hours when you need YouTube archives, and keep local recordings. |
| The feed stops overnight or a segment transition fails. | The specific encoder or automation may not restart or hand off reliably. | Test recovery and transitions before launch, monitor stream health, and arrange a person or verified automation path to respond. |
| Chat, notifications or personalized ads are unavailable. | The stream is set as made for kids, for which YouTube disables or limits these features. | Keep the audience setting accurate; do not change it to regain features. |

Frequently Asked Questions
Can a person under 16 operate the livestream?
YouTube says the person livestreaming must be at least 16; its guidance describes additional safeguards for younger participants.
Does running the stream through a cloud service make it eligible for ads?
No. Monetization depends on YouTube Partner Program eligibility, applicable policies and the content’s audience designation, not the location of the encoder.
