You can run a YouTube ambient music stream from a Raspberry Pi by looping prepared, rights-cleared audio and a simple visual through FFmpeg, then sending the output to YouTube Live. The Pi can host the playout and encoder, but FFmpeg’s ability to send a stream does not guarantee uninterrupted 24/7 operation: test your exact files and setup, supervise the process, monitor YouTube’s stream health, and plan for session and archive limits.

What the Raspberry Pi will do—and what it will not

In this setup, the Pi reads prepared media, encodes or copies it into a YouTube-compatible stream, and sends that stream to YouTube. Keep rendering, elaborate animation, and complex real-time effects off the Pi unless tests show that your particular model and FFmpeg build can handle them with headroom.

Raspberry Pi 5 has a quad-core 2.4GHz Arm CPU and Gigabit Ethernet. Its published 4Kp60 HEVC specification describes decoding, not proof that a particular FFmpeg encode or filter pipeline will run well. The manufacturer recommends a high-quality 5V/5A USB-C supply and says active cooling helps Pi 5 perform best. Raspberry Pi OS Trixie and Bookworm are listed as supported; versions older than Bookworm are not. See Raspberry Pi 5 specifications.

There is no published benchmark here for a Pi’s 24/7 FFmpeg uptime, power draw, temperatures, or stream success rate. Treat performance as a test result you must establish on your own hardware, not something guaranteed by the CPU specification.

Prepare the YouTube channel and live stream

  1. Check eligibility. YouTube says the channel must be verified and must not have had a live-stream restriction in the previous 90 days. First-time live enablement can take up to 24 hours. Start setup well before the planned launch. See YouTube’s encoder setup guide and live-streaming tips.
  2. Create or reuse a stream in YouTube Studio. Choose the encoder workflow and copy the server URL and stream key. Keep the key private: anyone with it may be able to send video to your channel.
  3. Start with an unlisted test. Send a representative sample, check the Live Control Room preview and stream health, and verify the watch page on a phone. Do not make the stream public until picture, sound, looping, and recovery behavior have been checked.

Choose a conservative ingest profile

For a static or low-motion ambient visual, YouTube’s H.264 recommendation for 720p at 30 fps is 3 Mbps. Its recommendation for H.264 1080p at 30 fps is 5 Mbps. These are YouTube ingest recommendations, not measurements of what a Raspberry Pi can encode. Begin at 720p if it meets your needs, then test before moving up.

Setting Starting point Notes
Video codec H.264 Shown in the example command below.
Resolution and frame rate 1280×720 at 30 fps For 1080p30, use 5 Mbps as YouTube’s H.264 bitrate recommendation and test Pi performance.
Video bitrate 3 Mbps for H.264 720p30 YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR). Leave upload headroom and test the actual stream.
Keyframe interval 2 seconds YouTube recommends two seconds and says not to exceed four seconds.
Audio AAC stereo, 128 kbps, 44.1 kHz YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends these stereo audio settings.

YouTube’s current encoder guidance also lists H.265/HEVC and AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, CBR, and frame rates up to 60 fps. Codec availability on YouTube does not establish that your Pi, FFmpeg build, or chosen pipeline can encode that format reliably. Use a representative visual and soundtrack during tests, check your upload capacity, and monitor stream health. See YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate recommendations.

Prepare media and send it with FFmpeg

Use a simple, testable source

For a first run, use one still image and one audio file, or prepare a single video file in advance. Use a visual you have rights to use, and audio whose licence explicitly covers YouTube livestreaming and archived playback. If the audio loop has a click, silence, or timing discontinuity at its end, FFmpeg will repeat that flaw too; listen to the loop boundary before going live.

Install an FFmpeg build available for your Raspberry Pi OS and confirm that it includes the encoders you intend to use. Check the installed build with ffmpeg -version. A simple software H.264 encode is easy to reason about, but its suitability for continuous use depends on the Pi model and workload; measure CPU use and stream health during an extended test.

Set the YouTube endpoint and protect the key

In a terminal, set the server URL and stream key copied from YouTube Studio. Use your actual values, not the example text. Do not publish the key or leave it in a public script or repository.

export YOUTUBE_URL='paste-the-server-url-from-youtube-studio-here'
export YOUTUBE_KEY='paste-your-private-stream-key-here'

For a persistent service, store those values in a root-readable environment file rather than a public project file. The destination in the command below joins the server URL and key with a slash; if YouTube supplies a URL that already includes the key or a different format, follow the endpoint format shown in Studio.

Loop an audio file under a still image

This template loops an MP3 indefinitely and repeats a still image while creating a 720p30 H.264/AAC stream. Replace the input filenames and endpoint values. Confirm that your installed FFmpeg accepts the options and that the stream appears correctly in YouTube’s preview before relying on it.

ffmpeg -hide_banner -re -stream_loop -1 -i ambient.mp3 -loop 1 -framerate 30 -i visual.jpg -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -tune stillimage -pix_fmt yuv420p -r 30 -g 60 -keyint_min 60 -b:v 3M -maxrate 3M -bufsize 6M -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 -ac 2 -f flv "$YOUTUBE_URL/$YOUTUBE_KEY"
  • -stream_loop -1 asks FFmpeg to repeat the audio input indefinitely. -re paces that file input at its native rate; FFmpeg documents this as useful for file-based live output.
  • -loop 1 repeats the still-image input. The example encodes rather than stream-copies, so the Pi must do the video encoding in real time.
  • -g 60 sets a 60-frame GOP, which at 30 fps is two seconds; -keyint_min 60 sets the minimum interval. The bitrate and audio options match the 720p30 starting profile above.
  • The command is a template, not a tested guarantee. Input formats, FFmpeg build, timestamps, filters, and YouTube endpoint formats can change what works. Check logs and the YouTube preview.

FFmpeg options apply to the next input or output and reset between files, so option order matters. The manual defines -c copy as stream copying: it can reduce CPU use when media already has compatible codecs and format, but it does not repair incompatible codecs, containers, or timestamps. Do not replace the encoding options with stream copy without first verifying the source streams against YouTube’s ingest requirements. See the FFmpeg documentation.

If you have a prepared video instead

A single prepared video can simplify playout, but it still needs to be encoded or copied in a way YouTube accepts. FFmpeg’s -stream_loop -1 can repeat an input indefinitely. Whether stream copy is appropriate depends on its actual codecs, container, timestamps, and compatibility; inspect and test the file rather than assuming that every MP4 can be copied directly to a live endpoint.

Make the Pi suitable for unattended operation

  • Prefer wired Ethernet where possible. Pi 5 includes Gigabit Ethernet as well as dual-band Wi-Fi; a wired connection is a practical reliability choice, not a guarantee against ISP or network interruptions.
  • Use adequate power and cooling. Raspberry Pi recommends a high-quality 5V/5A USB-C supply for Pi 5 and says active cooling helps it perform best.
  • Measure the real workload. Run the exact audio, visual, resolution, frame rate, and filters you plan to use. Watch CPU load, temperatures, dropped frames, and YouTube stream health during a long test. No particular memory amount is established as a minimum for this FFmpeg use.
  • Keep logs and storage checks. Retain FFmpeg and service logs, monitor available disk space, and alert yourself if the process exits or YouTube reports unhealthy ingest.

Restart FFmpeg after a failure

A process supervisor can start FFmpeg at boot and restart it after an unexpected exit. The following systemd unit is a starting pattern, not a tested, universal configuration. Save it as /etc/systemd/system/ambient-live.service, replace YOUR_LINUX_USER with the account that can read the media and environment file, and create the referenced script and environment file with permissions appropriate for your system.

[Unit]
Description=Ambient YouTube live stream
After=network-online.target
Wants=network-online.target

[Service]
Type=simple
User=YOUR_LINUX_USER
EnvironmentFile=/etc/ambient-live.env
ExecStart=/usr/local/bin/ambient-live.sh
Restart=always
RestartSec=10

[Install]
WantedBy=multi-user.target

Create /usr/local/bin/ambient-live.sh with this content, using the same tested FFmpeg command and input paths:

#!/bin/sh
exec ffmpeg -hide_banner -re -stream_loop -1 -i /path/to/ambient.mp3 -loop 1 -framerate 30 -i /path/to/visual.jpg -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -tune stillimage -pix_fmt yuv420p -r 30 -g 60 -keyint_min 60 -b:v 3M -maxrate 3M -bufsize 6M -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 -ac 2 -f flv "$YOUTUBE_URL/$YOUTUBE_KEY"

Put the endpoint and key assignments in /etc/ambient-live.env; restrict access because the stream key is a credential. Make the script executable, then load and enable the service:

sudo systemctl status ambient-live.service
journalctl -u ambient-live.service -f

A service restart only restarts the encoder process. It cannot fix a lost internet connection, expired or revoked key, incompatible input, or YouTube-side restriction. Test the recovery path by stopping the process and by interrupting the network during an unlisted test. YouTube recommends checking failover, local archive growth, the mobile watch page, and audio/video continuously in its live-streaming tips.

Plan session boundaries and recordings

YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived; streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. If an archive matters, schedule sessions comfortably below that threshold, keep a local recording where storage allows, and verify that the recording grows. Test the restart and handoff between sessions before relying on a continuous-looking channel. See YouTube’s archive guidance.

Clear music rights before launch

YouTube places responsibility for rights on the streamer. Its livestream terms say: “You represent and warrant that you have all necessary rights for the exploitation of the Live Content on the Google Services throughout the world, including, without limitation, music licensing rights from artists, record labels, publishers (including public performance licenses) and any other royalty participants.” Read the livestream terms and conditions.

YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. A match may interrupt or terminate a stream, and YouTube says even licensed music can be interrupted if the rights owner has not added your channel to its Content ID allowlist. Before using a track or catalogue, get written confirmation covering livestreams, archived/VOD use, territories, and the process for allowlisting your channel. See YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Permission to use a track does not by itself establish that a channel qualifies for monetization. YouTube Partner Program membership is required to monetize livestreams, and monetization policies apply to live content. YouTube says repetitive or mass-produced content may be classed as inauthentic; copyright permission and monetization eligibility are separate questions. See YouTube channel monetization policies.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you do not want a Pi and home internet connection to host the encoder, StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos. The setup is: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home. It streams the uploaded file as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. It is a YouTube-only option and plays uploaded videos rather than broadcasting a live camera feed. Start your free first day with StreamNeo.
