To run a 24/7 UHD channel on AWS, build a continuously running live pipeline: feed a compatible UHD source into AWS Elemental MediaLive, configure and validate a UHD encode, package the output with AWS Elemental MediaPackage if its formats and origin features suit your needs, and distribute playback through Amazon CloudFront. AWS’s published live-streaming deployment is a useful architecture starting point, but its sample encoding ladders stop at 1080p. A UHD channel needs its own MediaLive configuration, regional and quota checks, resilience plan, and cost estimate.
This guide reflects AWS documentation checked on October 3, 2026. AWS does not publish a current, configuration-specific price for a 24/7 UHD deployment in the material covered here, so the cost must be modeled from your design and Region rather than inferred from an SD/HD example.
What the AWS architecture does—and what it does not do
AWS’s live-streaming reference architecture uses MediaLive for live ingest and encoding, MediaPackage for packaging, and CloudFront for viewer delivery. Its design processes two feeds through parallel MediaLive processing for redundancy and supports HLS, DASH, and CMAF outputs. The reference deployment is a foundation to customize, not a ready-made 4K channel.
The published deployment guide’s example ladders are progressive 30 fps at 540p, 720p, and 1080p. They demonstrate an adaptive-bitrate setup but do not establish that the default deployment produces UHD. Configure and validate the UHD output and any companion renditions for your channel.

Plan the contribution feed and availability target
Define the signal before choosing services
Document the upstream feed’s resolution, codec, bitrate, frame rate, and delivery method. Decide whether the channel also needs particular audio tracks, captions, or alternate tracks. Select an input type that fits the actual contribution workflow; AWS’s deployment guide lists URL pull, RTMP pull or push, RTP push, and MediaConnect as options. Check that the selected services and input path are available in your intended Region before committing to the design.
Design for independent recovery
For high availability, plan independent primary and backup contribution paths and determine how failover works with the selected input type. AWS’s reference architecture processes two feeds in parallel, but its presence in the reference design does not validate your own source paths or recovery behavior. Confirm that the feeds are genuinely independent enough for your risk model, and test the complete failover and recovery path before production.
Configure MediaLive for UHD
AWS documents UHD/4K output up to 2160 vertical resolution using H.264/AVC or H.265/HEVC. AV1 is documented for SD and HD, not UHD. Choose between the supported UHD codec families based on your workflow, delivery bitrate goals, and the devices your audience actually uses; AWS’s documentation does not establish universal compatibility or a single best codec.

- Choose the output shape. Specify the intended UHD resolution and frame rate, then decide whether to provide only UHD or also lower-resolution adaptive-bitrate renditions. The appropriate ladder depends on device support, viewer bandwidth, quality targets, and output cost; AWS does not prescribe a universal UHD ladder for this use case.
- Set the encode for the source and audience. Configure the channel’s codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and any required audio or alternate tracks to match the contribution workflow and delivery requirements. The documentation reviewed confirms UHD capability but does not provide a single bitrate or channel profile suitable for every source.
- Check the input-specific limit. A MediaLive channel with a CDI input can have only one UHD output encode. If you need additional UHD output encodes, verify that this input constraint fits the design before building the channel.
- Verify account quota. The maximum number of MediaLive channels with UHD is a changeable quota. Check the value in your AWS account and request an increase if the planned channel count exceeds it.
- Validate the actual output. Confirm that the deployed channel produces the intended UHD rendition and any companion renditions, and that downstream packaging and playback accept them. Do not treat the reference solution’s 1080p ladder as UHD validation.
Package and deliver to viewers
Choose packaging to match playback needs
In the reference design, MediaLive sends adaptive-bitrate output to MediaPackage, which provides HLS, DASH, and CMAF endpoints. Those formats are not interchangeable guarantees of UHD playback on every device. Match output formats, codec, any DRM or authorization requirements, and the player to your supported-device requirements.
MediaPackage is useful when you need its packaging formats or origin features. CloudFront documentation also describes serving already-formatted outputs from a scalable origin, so the packaging and origin path should be selected for the outputs and controls your channel actually needs.
Authorize the origin path deliberately
In the AWS reference implementation, CloudFront uses MediaPackage endpoints as origins. Playback requests are authorized through CloudFront: the distribution sends a CDN identifier header, and MediaPackage fulfills playback requests through that authorized path. The identifier is stored in Secrets Manager. Configure the origin and cache behavior as part of the live delivery design rather than exposing an unintended direct playback path.

Keep the channel operating continuously
A 24/7 channel is a continuously running service, not a short event deployment. AWS’s MediaLive pricing documentation distinguishes running and idle resource charges: running charges apply to attached inputs and configured outputs, and output charges can apply even when an output is paused. Model the intended always-on state, configured outputs, and redundancy rather than pricing only the time an event is watched.
The reference solution deploys supporting services through CloudFormation and includes CloudFront distributions and a demo player bucket. AWS describes the template as customizable; its deployment estimate is not a guarantee of production readiness or UHD validation. Review and adapt the deployment for your own access controls, source feeds, operational procedures, monitoring, and playback requirements.
Estimate the cost of your actual UHD design
AWS’s live-streaming cost examples use simplifying assumptions, may exceed actual running costs, and are subject to price changes. The examples are for SD or HD configurations, not a 24/7 UHD profile, so they are not a UHD quote and should not be extrapolated to one.

Before production, confirm that MediaLive and MediaPackage are available in the chosen Region, and check MediaConnect availability if you plan to use it. AWS notes that regional service availability varies and account quotas can be lower than published defaults. Verify the MediaLive UHD-channel quota and the MediaPackage channel and endpoint capacity in the specific account rather than assuming a general limit applies to your deployment. Also confirm that the chosen input type supports the source-feed format and workflow you intend to use.

Troubleshoot common deployment failures
| Symptom | What to check | Corrective action |
|---|---|---|
| The channel produces no UHD rendition. | The deployed channel may still use the reference solution’s published 540p, 720p, and 1080p example ladder. | Configure a channel-specific UHD output and validate the resulting rendition; the example ladder is not a UHD profile. |
| The planned channel cannot add another UHD output encode. | Whether the channel uses a CDI input. | Account for the CDI limit of one UHD output encode per channel and revise the output design if necessary. |
| A UHD channel cannot be created or scaled to the planned count. | The account’s current MediaLive UHD-channel quota. | Check the quota in the account and request an increase where available before relying on the higher channel count. |
| Viewers cannot retrieve playback through the expected path. | CloudFront origin configuration, the CDN identifier header, the Secrets Manager value, and the MediaPackage authorization path. | Align the distribution’s origin behavior with the authorized MediaPackage path in the reference design, then validate playback through CloudFront. |
| A service or input choice is unavailable in the target Region. | Regional availability for MediaLive, MediaPackage, and MediaConnect if used, plus the selected input’s support for the source workflow. | Confirm availability before launch and choose a supported Region and compatible contribution path. |
| Actual spend differs from an event estimate. | Whether the estimate used SD/HD assumptions rather than the always-on UHD configuration, and whether it includes all configured outputs, redundancy, packaging, and delivery demand. | Rebuild the estimate from current regional pricing and the deployed design, and monitor spending with a budget. |
