You can use FFmpeg on Ubuntu to send a recorded lesson to a compatible live-streaming endpoint, but a command that starts successfully is not proof it will keep a course stream running around the clock. You need an endpoint and its current ingest settings, a tested loop or playlist, and a plan for process and network failures. The guide below covers the FFmpeg workflow; if your destination is YouTube and you would rather not keep a computer running, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative.
What FFmpeg does—and what you need first
FFmpeg reads, optionally encodes, and sends media. It does not create a public viewing page, discover an audience, provide a stream key, or grant access to a platform account. Choose the receiving service or server separately and check its current publishing requirements before you start.
- An Ubuntu computer with FFmpeg installed and access to the lesson files.
- A destination that accepts a live stream using a protocol supported by your FFmpeg build.
- The destination’s publishing URL and any required credentials or stream key. Treat a stream key like a password: do not publish it in logs, screenshots, or shared commands.
- The endpoint’s required codecs, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, keyframe interval, and authentication method.
The destination platform is not specified here, so there is no universal stream-key path or set of ingest settings to copy. Confirm those details with your chosen provider and test on the Ubuntu release and FFmpeg build you will actually use.
Send one recorded lesson to an RTMP endpoint
The FFmpeg project documents this real-time file-to-RTMP pattern:

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
ffmpeg -re -i input.mp4 -f flv rtmp://server/live/stream
FFmpeg’s protocol documentation presents this as an example, not a command guaranteed to work unchanged with every platform. Replace input.mp4 with your file and the example URL with the endpoint details supplied by your destination.
-rereads the input at its native rate instead of sending a file as fast as possible.-i input.mp4selects the input file.-f flvselects the FLV output container used in the documented example.- The final URL is a placeholder publishing endpoint; the server, application path, authentication, and stream key are destination-specific.
This is a minimal transport example. It does not set video or audio codecs, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, or keyframe interval. Add only settings that match the endpoint’s current requirements. If the source already has suitable codecs and the destination accepts them, a stream-copy workflow may avoid encoding; whether that is suitable depends on both the media and endpoint. When encoding is required, choose encoder settings based on the endpoint specification and the capacity of the Ubuntu machine. Validate the resulting stream at the destination rather than assuming the example’s defaults are appropriate.
Choose and validate a lesson loop or playlist
Repeat a single lesson
A single-file command does not establish a complete 24/7 loop. Check the input-loop behavior supported by your installed FFmpeg build, then inspect the boundary between repetitions for timestamp problems, audio/video synchronization changes, or playback interruption. Test at least one complete loop before relying on it unattended.

Rotate through multiple lessons
For a course playlist, decide the lesson order and durations, whether transitions or an intermission slate are needed, and what should happen if a file is missing. Building the lessons into one continuous program can make playback easier to reason about, while switching inputs can make updates or scheduling more flexible. The right choice depends on whether the course order is fixed or needs to change without rebuilding the program.
Whichever approach you use, observe a full pass through the intended sequence and check picture, sound, synchronization, and continuity at every transition. Starting FFmpeg is only the first check, not evidence that the full schedule works.
Use RTSP only with an RTSP-capable destination
RTMP is not interchangeable with RTSP. Ubuntu’s Noble FFmpeg protocol manual documents an RTSP publishing pattern and TCP/UDP transport options, but that route is usable only when the receiving server supports the corresponding RTSP workflow. Consult the Ubuntu Noble FFmpeg protocol manual and the server’s own requirements before choosing it.

Plan for network and process failures
What FIFO recovery can—and cannot—do
FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer can attempt recovery from output failures, including network-output failures. Its queue policy involves a trade-off: it can block encoding during a temporary failure, or continue and drop packets if the queue overflows. Blocking avoids dropping packets from that queue but may stall processing; dropping can preserve live timing at the cost of omitted content. The FFmpeg FIFO muxer documentation describes the options, and the FFmpeg muxer source documentation includes an RTMP-through-FIFO recovery example.
Adapt any example to the installed FFmpeg release and your endpoint, then test it under the failure conditions you expect. Retry behavior is not a guarantee of uninterrupted playback for viewers: the destination, network, queue limits, and recovery duration all matter.
Keep an unattended Ubuntu process observable
For an around-the-clock stream, use the host’s service manager to supervise FFmpeg, retain logs, and alert on repeated restarts or lack of progress. Validate the exact service configuration on your Ubuntu release; the references here do not provide a release-validated systemd unit or prescribe an alerting product. Check the remote stream from a separate client so that a local process appearing active is not mistaken for successful playback.

Label an audio stream’s language when useful
FFmpeg documents this example for setting the language metadata on the first audio stream:
-metadata:s:a:0 language=eng
This labels metadata; it does not translate the lesson, generate subtitles, or ensure every player displays the label. The example appears in the FFmpeg documentation. Check the output and player behavior if the label matters to learners.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Check YouTube rights and channel policies before looping lessons
If YouTube is your destination, make sure you have the rights to stream every lesson and any music, images, or other material it contains. A technical loop does not grant permission to rebroadcast copyrighted material. Also review YouTube’s current live-streaming and monetization policies for your channel and content; the FFmpeg examples above do not establish those platform rules. A language course should offer meaningful instructional value rather than relying on repetition alone, and rights or reused-content questions are separate from whether FFmpeg can transmit the file.

Troubleshoot common failures
- Connection fails immediately: confirm the endpoint URL, protocol, application path, credentials, network access, and that the destination is accepting a live input.
- The destination connects but rejects the stream: compare the output codecs, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and keyframe interval with the destination’s current ingest requirements.
- The lesson plays too quickly: check that the input is being read in real time with
-refor file-based streaming. - The stream stops at the end of the file: the single-input example is not a looping configuration. Configure and test the loop behavior supported by your installed build.
- Playback breaks at a loop or playlist boundary: inspect timestamps, audio/video synchronization, file availability, and transitions; consider preparing a continuous program if live switching is the source of the problem.
- Network interruption causes a stall or missing content: review FIFO recovery and queue policy. Blocking and packet dropping have different costs, and neither guarantees an uninterrupted viewer experience.
- FFmpeg appears active but viewers see no progress: inspect logs and verify playback from a separate client; supervise the process and alert on repeated restarts or lack of progress.
- The language label is absent or ineffective: confirm the metadata is attached to the intended audio stream and test with the player learners use. Metadata does not create translated audio or captions.
