You can run a 24/7 rain sounds livestream without leaving your home computer on: put the audio, visuals, and OBS on a cloud server, then send the stream to YouTube using the channel’s current RTMPS ingest details and stream key. The setup is not maintenance-free: the host must sustain the workload and network traffic, the stream needs monitoring and recovery planning, and you must have rights to every sound and image you broadcast.
How the setup works
Your cloud server runs OBS and holds the media files. OBS plays a rain recording with a still or looping visual, encodes the result, and sends it to YouTube over RTMPS. YouTube then distributes the live stream to viewers. The cloud host replaces the home computer as the machine that must remain online; it does not remove the need to manage the server, verify the stream, or address interruptions.
There is no single cloud operating-system image, server size, or headless-display recipe established as the right choice for every setup. Choose a host and configuration based on your actual OBS workload, output settings, storage, and network terms, then test the full arrangement before relying on it.
Before you build: channel eligibility and content rights
Check that YouTube allows the channel to go live
YouTube’s stated prerequisites include a verified channel and no live-stream restriction in the preceding 90 days. Check the channel’s Live Control Room before spending time configuring the server. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.

Use rain audio and visuals you are entitled to broadcast
Use recordings and images you created, or content whose license permits livestreaming and any archive you intend to keep. Save the license terms and permission records. YouTube’s livestream terms place responsibility on the content provider: “You represent and warrant that you have all necessary rights for the exploitation of the Live Content on the Google Services throughout the world, including, without limitation, music licensing rights from artists, record labels, publishers (including public performance licenses) and any other royalty participants.” Read the YouTube livestream terms.
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. A match can lead to interruption or termination, and a license alone may not prevent a disruption if the rights holder has not allowlisted your channel. If a rights holder operates a Content ID system, ask whether your channel needs to be allowlisted before going live. YouTube describes this in its live-streaming copyright guidance.

Choose a cloud host for OBS, media, and continuous output
There is no universal server size or provider recommendation for this workload. Estimate what your chosen OBS encoder and output settings require, then compare providers against the complete workload rather than choosing on CPU or headline bandwidth alone.
- Compute: Allow enough sustained CPU capacity for the encoder and scene you plan to run. A more demanding output or encoding method may need more resources; verify it with a test on the selected host.
- Outbound network: Check sustained upload capacity, transfer allowances, throttling and fair-use terms, and the reliability of the region and route to YouTube. YouTube recommends keeping total stream bitrate within available upload bandwidth with 20% headroom; its guidance also warns that network disruptions can break streams. That margin is guidance, not a guarantee of uninterrupted service. See YouTube’s encoder and network guidance.
- Storage: Keep the source audio and visual files on the server, with enough room for the media and any files your setup needs.
- Administration and recovery: Check how you will remotely access the host, restart OBS or the server, and respond if the process or connection stops. Review the provider’s restart behavior and network policies.
These criteria help you assess a cloud VPS or dedicated server, but they do not identify a tested provider, plan, or current price. Do not treat a provider’s advertised transfer allowance as proof that a particular OBS configuration will run reliably; test the route and actual workload.

Prepare the rain loop and OBS scene
- Place the media on the host. Upload your cleared rain recording and visual to storage available to OBS on the server. Keep the source files accessible after a reboot.
- Create a simple scene. Add the rain audio and a still image or looping visual. Make sure the audio source actually plays and the visual does not unexpectedly disappear or turn blank during an extended run.
- Choose output settings your host and connection can sustain. OBS’s maintained YouTube service configuration provides a baseline, but its listed recommendations can change. Use the recommendations currently shown by YouTube for your resolution and encoder rather than hard-coding a value from an old example. YouTube’s Live Control Room and current OBS YouTube RTMPS service configuration are the appropriate places to check current connection details and configuration guidance.
- Check the OBS scene after a restart. Confirm that media paths still resolve and that audio and picture resume as intended after OBS or the host is restarted. How to keep OBS available after a reboot depends on the server’s operating system and setup; no one automation method is established here as universal.
Connect OBS to YouTube securely
- Open YouTube Live Control Room for the channel and retrieve the RTMPS ingest URL and stream key issued for that stream. Use the current values displayed there, not an example copied from a guide.
- Configure OBS for YouTube RTMPS. Select YouTube RTMPS in OBS if available, or enter the exact RTMPS server URL supplied by Live Control Room. YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP secured with TLS/SSL.
- Enter the stream key in OBS. Treat it like a password. Do not show it in screenshots, terminal output, public configuration, or a recording of your setup.
- Start with a private or unlisted test. Check YouTube’s preview, listen for continuous rain audio, and verify that the picture is present before making the stream public.
YouTube’s live-stream setup instructions explain where to find the stream URL and key: Set up a live stream with an encoder. OBS’s service configuration lists its YouTube RTMPS endpoints and recommendations, but it is a reference rather than a replacement for the values and guidance currently issued to your channel.
Test the stream before calling it 24/7
A stream that works for a few minutes may still fail after a restart, a network interruption, or an extended run. Before depending on it, test the complete chain: media playback, OBS encoding, cloud networking, and YouTube ingest.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
- Watch the YouTube preview and confirm that both the visual and sound remain present.
- Check OBS and YouTube status indicators for dropped frames, connection warnings, or other errors.
- Test what happens when OBS is restarted and when the cloud host is restarted, then confirm that the intended scene and media return.
- Simulate or observe a connection interruption only in a controlled test, and verify how you will restore the stream if YouTube or the host disconnects.
- Decide how you will check the stream while it runs and who can respond if it stops. A cloud server does not automatically mean OBS or the live connection will recover in every failure case.
Copyright, monetization, and viewer expectations
A rain loop can be useful to viewers, but looping a recording does not itself establish that the channel qualifies for YouTube monetization. YouTube’s channel monetization policy expects original, authentic content and says highly repetitive or mass-produced content can be ineligible. The policy page records a July 15, 2025 clarification and renaming to “inauthentic content.” Review the current YouTube channel monetization policies; do not assume that a long stream or a particular upload pattern will pass review.
For eligible monetized livestreams, YouTube may serve pre-roll, display, and mid-roll ads, but it does not guarantee that every ad slot will serve. Revenue is therefore not assured by keeping a stream live. YouTube explains ad formats and delivery in its live-stream monetization guidance.

Troubleshooting common failures
YouTube does not receive the stream
- Possible cause: The server URL or stream key is incorrect, stale, or entered in the wrong OBS field.
- Fix: Reopen Live Control Room, copy the current RTMPS URL and key for the channel, and re-enter them in OBS. Keep the key private.
The connection is unstable or drops frames
- Possible cause: The host’s route or sustained outbound capacity cannot support the total bitrate, or the provider is limiting traffic.
- Fix: Check the host’s transfer and network policies, observe the connection during a test, and reduce output demands if the available network cannot sustain them. Keep YouTube’s recommended 20% upload-bandwidth headroom in view.
The stream starts, but rain audio or the image disappears
- Possible cause: A media source path is unavailable, playback ended without looping, or the scene did not recover as expected.
- Fix: Verify the media is stored on the server, check the source’s looping and scene behavior, and repeat the test after restarting OBS.
YouTube interrupts the stream
- Possible cause: YouTube detected material associated with a third party, or the rights holder has not allowlisted the channel.
- Fix: Review the notice in Live Control Room, confirm your rights cover the use, and contact the rights holder about allowlisting where applicable. Do not assume that holding a license prevents automated interruption.
The stream does not resume after a host or OBS restart
- Possible cause: The host restarted without restoring OBS, or OBS returned without access to the media or correct scene.
- Fix: Confirm the server’s restart and remote-administration behavior, media paths, and OBS launch process. Test both host and application restarts before relying on the setup.
