You can run a prerecorded bhajan stream around the clock by keeping a Linux VPS online, using FFmpeg to loop and pace your media, and sending the output to YouTube Live over RTMPS. The setup requires more than a working command: confirm the recording and visual rights, test YouTube’s stream health, and arrange recovery for encoder failures. A restart policy cannot prevent every platform, network, or hosting interruption.
Before you start: confirm rights and channel access
Use recordings and visuals you own or have permission to stream. A traditional bhajan composition and a particular performance or recording may have different rights owners; the fact that a composition is traditional does not establish that a recording is free to use.
Get written permission that covers the intended use, including live streaming, platform, territory, duration, and whether the stream will be archived. If a rights holder’s music is claimed through Content ID, ask the rights holder to add your channel to its allowlist. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content and may replace a stream with a placeholder, interrupt it, or terminate it. Permission alone does not ensure that YouTube will accept the stream if the channel has not been allowlisted where required. Read YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams.
Licensing depends on the recording, use, and territory. The U.S.-focused Music Publishers Association guidance explains that an audiovisual recording of a performance can require synchronization rights in addition to public-performance rights. It is not a complete guide to every country or use; check with the relevant owners and licensing bodies for the territory where you plan to stream. See the Music Publishers Association’s streaming guidance.

Choose the setup that fits your needs
A VPS gives you Linux server control, but you are responsible for the encoder, updates, logs, network, and recovery. Other approaches trade some control for a different maintenance burden. StreamNeo is listed first as the cloud alternative: it keeps a YouTube stream running from uploaded videos, at any quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, and the first day is free.
| Option | Best fit | What to weigh |
|---|---|---|
| StreamNeo | People who want uploaded bhajans streamed to YouTube without maintaining an always-on computer or VPS. | Cloud playback, playlists and automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream; YouTube only. Details and plans are at StreamNeo. |
| FFmpeg on a VPS | Operators who want server and encoder control and can administer Linux. | You choose the workflow, but must monitor the host, process, logs, storage, and outbound network. No universal VPS size is established: test your actual media and settings against the provider’s limits. |
| OBS | People who prefer a graphical encoder and can keep a computer running. | OBS is free and open source. A machine and a sufficiently stable connection must remain available; OBS says dropped frames can indicate an unstable connection or a bitrate the connection cannot sustain. See the OBS Help Portal. |
| Hosted playlist service | People who want server-side playlist playback without administering a VPS. | 247 LiveStream describes uploading media and streaming from its servers to YouTube and RTMP destinations while the user’s computer is off. Those are vendor claims; confirm current limits, cost, retention, reliability, security, and destination support directly at 247 LiveStream. |
When comparing options, check control and upkeep, playlist and loop behavior, supported destinations, continuous-run limits and recovery, storage and outbound-traffic limits, current cost, and the rights workflow. Do not treat a provider’s own comparison claims as an independent benchmark.

Prepare the VPS and bhajan files
- Pick a Linux VPS. Check the host’s sustained outbound bandwidth, CPU policy, storage, memory, traffic limits, and maintenance terms. The necessary capacity depends on your actual output settings and workload; the available guidance does not establish a universal plan size.
- Install FFmpeg and verify the build. Check the installed version and available options with
ffmpeg -versionand the relevant help output, such asffmpeg -h. FFmpeg option behavior can vary by build, so check its official command documentation. - Upload your media. Keep source files on the VPS, or make them available locally to FFmpeg. Retain an independent copy elsewhere. Inspect the audio and video codecs and duration, and play the file locally or in a short test before relying on it unattended.
- Choose a visual format. Bhajan audio can be paired with a rights-cleared video or static devotional image. A static image may simplify video encoding, but there is no universal compute benchmark here for a particular VPS; test the complete output on your selected host.
Set YouTube encoder settings
YouTube recommends RTMPS, which protects the RTMP connection with TLS. Its current encoder guide lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio over RTMP/RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval; it advises not exceeding four seconds. The recommended bitrate depends on codec, resolution, and frame rate. For H.264, YouTube lists 5 Mbps for 720p at 30 fps and 14 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps. These are YouTube ingestion recommendations, not guarantees of viewer quality or a VPS bandwidth plan. Check the current YouTube encoder settings and bitrate guide before deployment.

Use settings your source and host can sustain. YouTube transcodes live streams for viewers, so test the full chain at the intended resolution and bitrate with the actual audio and visual. Monitor stream health in Live Control Room during the test and after deployment.
Configure FFmpeg to loop and stream
FFmpeg’s -re reads file input at its native frame rate and is useful when output packet timing matters, such as streaming. -stream_loop -1 loops an input indefinitely. These are input options, so place them before the corresponding -i. The example below shows the structure, not a complete command for every media file: adapt codecs, dimensions, frame rate, bitrate, audio settings, and the current YouTube RTMPS endpoint to your source and chosen output.

The sample’s video bitrate is 5 Mbps, matching YouTube’s listed H.264 recommendation for 720p at 30 fps; it is not a setting for every resolution or source. Its GOP values assume 30 fps and a two-second interval. Adjust them if your frame rate differs. Confirm that your FFmpeg build supports the chosen codecs and that the output parameters match YouTube’s current guidance.
Retrieve the current RTMPS ingest URL and stream key from YouTube Live Control Room. Treat the key like a password: do not put it in public scripts, source repositories, screenshots, or shared logs. If the key is exposed, reset it in YouTube and update the service configuration.
Run the encoder under a service manager
Keep FFmpeg in the foreground under a service manager, rather than relying on an interactive SSH session. Configure a restart policy so a failed encoder process can be started again, and retain logs you can inspect. The exact service-manager configuration depends on your Linux distribution and deployment; verify its restart behavior with the command and media you actually use.

FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer documents network-output recovery options including attempt_recovery and retry delay. Treat these as options to test, not a guarantee that YouTube will preserve the same live session after a disconnect. See the FFmpeg formats documentation. A process restart cannot fix an expired or incorrect key, a YouTube enforcement action, host maintenance, or a broken upstream connection.
- Run a short test and confirm the picture and audio in Live Control Room.
- Check the encoder and service logs, YouTube’s stream-health indicator, and the VPS’s CPU, memory, disk, and network use.
- Stop and restart the encoder deliberately. Confirm both the service manager’s response and what YouTube shows when the encoder reconnects.
- Test a network interruption if practical. Check how your chosen output and service recover, and document how to reach the VPS if normal access fails.
- After deployment, repeat health checks after any change to media, FFmpeg, encoder settings, service configuration, or host.
Common problems and what to check
- YouTube does not receive a stream: confirm that live streaming is enabled, the RTMPS endpoint and key are current and entered correctly, and the VPS can make outbound connections. Keep the key private; reset it if exposed.
- Video arrives but audio is missing or rejected: inspect the source’s audio stream and confirm the output uses a supported audio codec and settings. Test with the actual recording before starting the continuous stream.
- Playback stutters or falls behind: check the host’s resource use and outbound network, then test a lower output load or a more suitable VPS. YouTube’s bitrate recommendations are ingestion guidance, not proof that your provider can sustain the traffic.
- The stream stops after an encoder failure: inspect the service and FFmpeg logs, then verify the restart policy with a deliberate process stop. Recovery features do not eliminate platform-side or network interruptions.
- YouTube warns, replaces, or interrupts the stream: stop using the disputed content and resolve the rights issue with the rights holder. If you have a license and the track is managed by Content ID, ask the rights holder about allowlisting your channel.
- The VPS restarts or becomes unreachable: use your provider’s recovery or console access, check for host maintenance and system resource problems, and verify that the encoder service starts correctly after reboot. Keep an independent copy of media and configuration, with the stream key stored securely.
Costs and operational trade-offs
A VPS may involve recurring hosting, storage, and outbound-traffic charges; check the provider’s current terms before choosing a plan. There is no universal cost or plan size established for this workflow. A VPS gives you direct control but makes you responsible for Linux administration and monitoring. OBS avoids VPS administration but requires a powered-on machine and stable connection. A hosted playlist service shifts server upkeep to a vendor, whose current limits and terms should be checked directly.
Or let it run in the cloud
