Use OBS Studio’s built-in Image Source in slideshow mode to rotate devotional images while your mantra audio plays. Add the slideshow to the scene you stream, frame it in the preview, then connect OBS to YouTube with the stream URL and key from YouTube Studio. Test the full scene and audio before going live.

Before you build the stream

Check that your channel can go live

YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-stream restrictions in the previous 90 days. First-time live streaming can take up to 24 hours to become available, so enable it and check access before the planned stream. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance and its encoder setup instructions.

Choose horizontal or vertical framing first

Decide the intended format before starting. YouTube documents horizontal (16:9) and vertical (9:16) live formats, including a dual-format route through Live Control Room. For vertical layouts, options include center crop, fit to phone width, and stacked. The documented third-party encoder route for dual delivery uses RTMP(S) and a second stream key. You cannot add vertical format after a stream has started. Preview devotional artwork and any text in the chosen framing so important details are not cropped or too small.

Confirm you have rights to the material

Being devotional, publicly viewable, or easy to download does not by itself establish permission to livestream an image or mantra recording. Check the rights for each artwork file and audio recording before using it; streaming setup does not grant those rights.

How to make a rotating image slideshow in OBS

  1. Create or open the scene. In OBS, use the Scenes panel to select the scene that will carry the mantra audio and other overlays, or create a dedicated scene for the stream.
  2. Add the slideshow source. In the Sources panel, select +, choose Image Slide Show (the precise label may vary by OBS version), and add it to the scene. Configure the image files in the source properties. OBS’s Sources Guide describes image and slideshow sources.
  3. Set the image sequence and timing. Add the files you want to show and arrange them in the order you want viewers to see. Set the slideshow’s change behavior and interval in its properties; the desired pace depends on the stream, so preview it rather than assuming one timing suits every mantra session.
  4. Fit or crop the artwork. Select the slideshow in the canvas preview and resize or position it. Use the source’s context menu or transform controls to fit it within the canvas, or crop it if you want a closer composition. Check the full frame at the output format you selected, especially for artwork with borders, faces, or text.
  5. Layer text and other overlays. Add text as a separate source if needed. In the Sources list, keep the text above the slideshow so it appears in front. Use the visibility controls to show or hide sources, and confirm that no overlay obscures essential parts of the image.
  6. Check audio and the finished scene. Make sure the mantra audio source is present and active, then watch the preview long enough to confirm that images change as intended and remain framed correctly. OBS recommends testing a setup before the first live stream; its Studio Overview Guide explains scenes, sources, transitions, and Studio Mode.

Automatic slideshow or manual image changes?

Approach How it works Best suited to
Image Slide Show source Cycles through multiple images within one scene. A hands-off rotation while the same audio and overlays remain in place.
Separate scenes and transitions Put each image in its own scene, then switch scenes with OBS controls or hotkeys. Studio Mode lets you prepare a scene in preview and transition it to the live output. Deliberate changes at specific points in a mantra session, or when each image needs a different composition.
Single Image source Displays one still image in a scene. A fixed devotional image rather than a rotation.

OBS supports both source-based slideshows and scene transitions. The choice is mainly about control: a slideshow advances without an operator selecting each image, while separate scenes allow intentional changes. See the OBS Sources Guide and OBS Studio Overview Guide.

Connect OBS to YouTube Live

  1. Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Create or select the live stream and locate its stream URL and stream key, following YouTube’s encoder instructions.
  2. Enter the connection details in OBS. Open OBS stream settings and select YouTube as the service if available. Otherwise, enter the YouTube stream URL and stream key provided in the Live Control Room. Treat the key as private: anyone with it may be able to send a feed to your stream.
  3. Start the encoder feed. Start streaming in OBS and check that the feed appears in YouTube’s Live Control Room preview. Follow YouTube’s on-screen flow to start the public live stream; sending an encoder feed and making the stream live are distinct parts of the workflow.
  4. Verify the live output. Confirm that the intended scene is on air, images are rotating and correctly framed, and mantra audio is present. If you use Studio Mode, transition the prepared scene to the live output when ready.

Preflight checklist

  • The channel is eligible for live streaming and the stream is configured in the intended horizontal or vertical format.
  • The slideshow contains the intended images in the intended order, with no missing files or unexpected crops.
  • Text and other overlays are visible and layered above the image.
  • The correct OBS scene is live, and the mantra audio is audible in the YouTube preview.
  • The YouTube Live Control Room shows the encoder feed before you complete its go-live flow.
  • You have permission to use the images and audio in a livestream.

Troubleshooting image and connection problems

The image does not change

Check that you added an Image Slide Show source rather than a single Image source, that multiple files are included, and that the source is visible in the active scene. Reopen its properties to review the configured sequence and change behavior.

The image is cut off or text is hard to read

Select the slideshow source in the canvas and adjust its fit, crop, and position. Check the composition in the actual horizontal or vertical format you chose; a framing that works in 16:9 may crop important material in 9:16.

The overlay is hidden behind the artwork

In the Sources list, move the text source above the slideshow. OBS renders higher sources in front of lower ones.

You cannot start a YouTube live stream

Check channel verification and whether a live-stream restriction falls within the prior 90 days. If this is the channel’s first live stream, activation may take up to 24 hours. Make sure you have completed the Live Control Room setup and entered the correct stream URL and key in OBS.

The YouTube preview does not show the OBS feed

Confirm OBS is streaming, the stream service or URL is correct, and the key matches the selected YouTube stream. Check the Live Control Room for its connection status and follow its prompts before attempting to go live.
