You can schedule a script to update a YouTube playlist for the current day of the month using the YouTube Data API. That changes which videos are in the playlist; it does not change the video currently playing in a livestream. For an on-air rotation, you also need separate playout or encoder automation.
First decide what “rotate” means
There are two different jobs people may mean by rotating a livestream playlist:
- Change playlist membership: add or remove videos so a YouTube playlist contains the selection for the current calendar day. The steps below automate this with the YouTube Data API.
- Change the live program: switch the media being transmitted by the encoder during a broadcast. Editing a YouTube playlist does not perform this switch.
YouTube treats a live broadcast and its stream as distinct resources: a broadcast is bound to one stream, which carries the feed. Playlist-item methods add or delete entries in a playlist; they do not start or stop a broadcast or select the media being transmitted. Plan the date-to-video rule
Choose what each date selects
Decide whether a date should select one video, a group of videos, or an item from a repeating cycle. For a repeating cycle of N groups, use a zero-based index:

For example, a cycle of three groups selects group 1 on day 1, group 2 on day 2, group 3 on day 3, then returns to group 1 on day 4. If particular dates should always select particular videos, use an explicit day-to-video mapping instead. YouTube does not prescribe this selection logic; it is your application’s rule.
Set the calendar and edge-case behavior
- Choose the time zone that defines the date. A job run near midnight can otherwise select different dates depending on the server’s time zone.
- Decide whether the selection changes at local midnight or at another specified time.
- Define what happens on the 29th, 30th, and 31st. A month may not contain every one of those dates, and a cycle or explicit mapping needs a deliberate fallback for dates without an assigned selection.
- Decide whether the playlist should contain only that day’s selection or retain some existing entries. The reconciliation step must reflect this choice.
Update playlist membership with the YouTube Data API
The API needs authorization for playlist operations. First identify the target playlist and its existing items. A playlist ID identifies the playlist; each existing entry has its own playlist-item ID as well as a video resource ID. Insertion uses the playlist ID and video resource ID, while deletion uses the playlist-item ID. See Google’s documentation for playlists.list, playlistItems.insert, and playlistItems.delete.

- Authorize and identify the playlist. Make an authorized API call to list the channel’s playlists or retrieve the target playlist. Store its playlist ID.
- List the current entries. Retrieve the playlist items and record each playlist-item ID and video resource ID. Account for all pages of results if the playlist spans multiple pages.
- Compute the desired selection. Get the current date in the configured time zone, apply your mapping, and produce the desired video IDs and order.
- Reconcile rather than clear and rebuild. Compare current membership with the desired set. Insert only missing videos and delete only entries that should no longer be present. This avoids unnecessary write calls and makes reruns safer.
- Handle order deliberately. The insert method supports a position field. If exact positions matter, configure the playlist for Manual ordering first; otherwise, omit the position and let the playlist’s existing ordering behavior apply. An insert requesting a position can fail with
manualSortRequiredif the playlist is not set up for manual sorting. - Verify and log. Record the computed date, desired video IDs, API responses, and errors. A second read after writes can confirm that the playlist matches the desired membership and order.
At a high level, a daily reconciliation job looks like this:

delete playlist itemIn a production script, account for duplicate video entries if your rules allow them, pagination, unavailable videos, and API errors. Do not respond to a failed write by deleting the entire playlist. Avoid overlapping runs: two jobs acting on stale reads can undo or duplicate one another’s changes.

Schedule the job and manage API quota
Run the job after midnight in the chosen time zone, or at the daily change time you selected. Scheduling and monitoring are operational responsibilities; the API does not guarantee that your job runs on time. Ensure authorization remains valid and alert on failures so an expired authorization or rejected item does not silently leave yesterday’s selection in place.

Google states that most YouTube Data API endpoints have a default allocation of 10,000 units per day, and that the quota resets at midnight Pacific Time—not at midnight in your channel’s local time. Check the YouTube Data API quota documentation for the applicable allocation and reset details. Since writes cost more than list calls, diff current membership against the target and make only necessary insertions and deletions. A video that is unavailable, a playlist that does not support the operation, or an invalid requested position can cause an insert to fail.

A playlist update is not a playout schedule. If the desired result is for the live feed to play a different video on each date, you need a separate system that controls the encoder or playout source and sends the resulting feed to YouTube. The YouTube Live Streaming API has a separate broadcast lifecycle: create a broadcast with its title, scheduled start time, and privacy status; create or reuse a stream; bind the broadcast to that stream; then transition the broadcast through its lifecycle. A stream can be reused for broadcasts at different times. The implementation guide for broadcasts and streams, broadcasts and streams model, and life of a broadcast guide describe those resources and state changes. The lifecycle guide notes that some schedule changes and content settings are permitted only in particular pre-live states.

Choose playout software or an encoder automation workflow that explicitly supports scheduled source rotation, then verify its YouTube output behavior. The playlist-membership script above can still maintain a public-facing playlist, but it is not a substitute for that on-air control.
