You generally cannot retract a Content ID dispute after submitting it. YouTube says a submitted dispute cannot be canceled. But “copyright dispute” can also mean a counter notification you filed or a copyright removal request filed against you, and those have different withdrawal rules. First identify the item in YouTube Studio and the email notice; there is no universal “retract dispute” button. No step can guarantee that you will avoid another strike.
Identify which copyright process you mean
Check the notice in YouTube Studio and the related email before taking action. A Content ID claim, a counter notification, and a copyright removal request are separate processes; who filed it determines what can be withdrawn.

If you submitted a Content ID dispute
YouTube Help states: “Can I cancel a dispute after it’s submitted? No, once you’ve submitted a dispute, it can’t be canceled.” This is YouTube’s stated policy on its current “Dispute a copyright claim” page, accessed October 3, 2026.
There is no cancellation step to take. Review the claim’s available options in Studio and consider getting legal advice if you are unsure you have the rights or a valid legal basis. YouTube says it does not decide who owns a work or whether a copyright exception applies.

The claimant generally has 30 days to respond to an initial Content ID dispute. If there is no response, YouTube says the claim expires and is released. That is a stated platform timeline, not a guarantee about the outcome of your individual case. A claimant may also submit a copyright removal request; if YouTube finds it valid, the video is removed and your channel receives a strike. An appeal can also lead to a removal request and strike. If you filed a counter notification
A counter notification is a legal request, not the same thing as a Content ID dispute. You can retract it only if the claimant has not yet responded.

- Check your email for YouTube’s confirmation of the counter notification and check whether the claimant has responded.
- If there has been no response, reply directly to the confirmation email and explicitly say you want to retract the counter notification. If you cannot use that route, email [email protected] with the retraction request.
- Keep a copy of your request and YouTube’s confirmation. If the claimant has already responded, YouTube’s guidance does not offer the same cancellation route; do not assume the counter notification can still be withdrawn this way.
YouTube says a counter notification should be used only when the removal was a mistake or misidentification. It requires contact details that are shared with the claimant. An authorized representative, such as an attorney, may submit one on your behalf. If you are uncertain about your legal position, seek legal advice rather than filing a counter notification merely to try to avoid a strike. YouTube Help: Submit a counter notification
If you want a copyright removal request withdrawn
The claimant filed the removal request, so the claimant—not you—must retract it. You can ask them to do so. In YouTube Studio, the contact route is:

- Select Select action.
- Choose Contact claimant and ask the claimant to retract the copyright removal request.
Be specific that you are requesting retraction of the removal request itself, not merely asking for the strike to be removed. YouTube accepts retraction of the removal request; a request to remove only the strike is not equivalent. If your channel already has a copyright strike
YouTube lists three routes for resolving a strike. Choose based on whether the removal was mistaken and whether the claimant is willing to retract the request.

- Ask the claimant to retract: Contact the claimant and request withdrawal of the original removal request, using the Studio contact path above.
- Submit a counter notification: Use this only if you believe the removal was a mistake or misidentification. It starts a legal process; it is not a casual way to get a strike removed.
If a counter notification is forwarded and considered valid, the claimant has 10 US business days to provide evidence of legal action to keep the content from being reinstated. This period is described under US legal procedure. YouTube Help: Submit a counter notification

A Content ID dispute does not itself equal a copyright strike. However, the claimant can submit a removal request during the dispute process; if YouTube considers that request valid, the video is removed and the channel receives a strike. An appeal can also lead to that outcome. A scheduled removal gives the uploader seven days to act before removal and a strike; a claimant has seven days to respond to an appeal. Practical safeguards while you resolve the notice
- Save the Studio notice, YouTube emails, claimant messages, and any supporting rights documentation.
- Do not send false information or make a legal declaration you cannot support.
- Distinguish a Content ID claim from a removal request and strike before choosing an action.
- If you are uncertain about ownership, permission, or an exception, get legal advice. YouTube’s procedures do not determine those questions for you.
