First identify what “ends” means. If a prerecorded ambience file reaches its end, loop that input with FFmpeg’s -stream_loop -1. If a network input disconnects or the publishing output fails, use the recovery mechanism for that layer. If the FFmpeg process exits, supervise it with a service manager such as systemd. These fixes address different failures, and none by itself confirms that YouTube has resumed the broadcast.
Identify what stopped
Check the FFmpeg log and the state of the input, output, and process before changing the command. A source reaching its end normally is not the same as a network disconnect, a failed publishing connection, or an exited FFmpeg process.
| What happened | Appropriate response | What it does not do |
|---|---|---|
| A finite file reached EOF | Loop the file input with -stream_loop -1. |
Restart a crashed FFmpeg process. |
| A supported network input disconnected | Use protocol-specific reconnect options where available. | Relaunch FFmpeg after it exits. |
| The output encountered a temporary failure while FFmpeg remains running | Consider the FIFO pseudo-muxer’s recovery options. | Fix a persistently invalid key, command, input, or network path. |
| FFmpeg exited | Run it under process supervision, such as a systemd service on Linux. | Prove that YouTube restored the broadcast. |
Loop a prerecorded ambience file
When the intended behavior is to repeat a local recording, set -stream_loop -1 as an input option for that file. FFmpeg documents -stream_loop as the number of times an input is looped; -1 means loop indefinitely. Place the option before the corresponding -i, because it applies to that input. For example:
ffmpeg -stream_loop -1 -re -i ambience.mp4 [output options] OUTPUT
Replace OUTPUT and the bracketed portion with your actual publishing options; they are explanatory placeholders, not literal command syntax. Check the behavior with your exact command and installed FFmpeg build. This option prevents a normal end-of-file from ending the input; it does not relaunch FFmpeg if the process crashes.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Reconnect a network input
If the ambience source itself is a network stream, FFmpeg’s protocol options distinguish a disconnect before EOF from EOF. The reconnect option covers reconnection after a disconnection before EOF; reconnect_at_eof treats EOF as an error and triggers reconnection, a behavior the FFmpeg documentation describes as useful for live or endless streams. The protocol documentation also describes controls for network errors, HTTP errors, retry counts, and delay limits. Check FFmpeg’s protocol documentation for the options supported by the specific protocol and your installed version.
These are protocol options, not universal switches for every input. They also do not restart an FFmpeg process that has exited. Confirm that an option applies to your input protocol before adding it.

Recover from a temporary output failure
If FFmpeg is still running but its publishing output has temporarily failed, the FFmpeg FIFO pseudo-muxer offers output recovery options, including attempt_recovery and a recovery wait. Its documentation includes an example aimed at continuing real-time processing and retrying a network output after a temporary failure. See the FFmpeg FIFO muxer documentation and verify the exact options against your installed version.
Recovery behavior depends on configuration and can involve dropped or delayed packets. It cannot repair a persistent problem such as an invalid stream key, broken command, unavailable input, or continuing network failure. FIFO recovery acts inside FFmpeg on selected output errors; it is not a process supervisor.

Restart an exited FFmpeg process with systemd
On Linux, run FFmpeg as the main process of a systemd service rather than starting it in an unmanaged background shell. Set a restart policy deliberately: Restart=on-failure retries qualifying failures but not a clean exit, while Restart=always also restarts after a clean exit. Add a delay with RestartSec= so a failure does not trigger an immediate relaunch loop.
Choose the restart policy
- Use
Restart=on-failurewhen an unexpected failure should trigger a retry, but an intentional clean exit should remain stopped. - Use
Restart=alwayswhen a clean FFmpeg exit should also be followed by a relaunch. - Set an intentional
RestartSec=delay and inspect logs after failures; repeated launches do not fix a persistent configuration or authentication problem.
Check the service and its logs
After changing a unit, reload systemd and restart the service using the applicable unit name:

sudo systemctl daemon-reload
sudo systemctl restart YOUR-UNIT.service
sudo systemctl status YOUR-UNIT.service
journalctl -u YOUR-UNIT.service -f
Replace YOUR-UNIT.service with the service’s actual name. The status and journal help distinguish an FFmpeg exit from a service that never launched it correctly. Keep FFmpeg as the service’s foreground process; a shell that backgrounds FFmpeg can make service supervision track the wrong process.
Verify that YouTube is live again
A service starting FFmpeg confirms only that the local process was launched. Check the YouTube Live Control Room preview and stream health after recovery. A local restart alone does not establish that YouTube resumed the same broadcast, preserved continuity, or made the stream publicly live. Treat this as an operational check, not a platform guarantee.
