If YouTube has ended your live broadcast, treat recovery as a new-stream setup: create or schedule a stream in YouTube Studio, confirm its stream URL and key, then restart the output from your automated playout service. Watch for the incoming preview in Live Control Room and, for a scheduled stream, click Go live when it is ready. The exact restart button or retry procedure depends on the playout service.
First, confirm whether the broadcast has actually ended
Stopping the encoder feed ends an encoder stream, and YouTube’s scheduled-stream workflow also instructs creators to click End Stream and stop sending content. If the event is already ended, do not assume reconnecting to its former session will reopen it. YouTube’s documented setup flow points to creating a new stream or scheduling another one; how a particular playout service handles a previous job is vendor-specific.
YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived. That archive is a recording, not a way to resume the ended live session. YouTube Help: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
Restart the broadcast through YouTube Studio and your playout service
- Create or schedule a stream. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create a new stream or schedule one. If the previous stream’s metadata and settings still fit, use Reuse settings.
- Check the connection details. Confirm the stream URL and stream key for the new stream. The stream key acts as the credential that lets the encoder send its feed. If your playout service has an old or incorrect key, replace it with the current one.
- Start the playout output. In the automated service, start the output or job that sends video to YouTube. The exact control and job state vary by vendor; consult that service’s own instructions if you cannot find its restart or output controls.
- Check the preview and go live. Wait for the incoming video in Live Control Room. For a scheduled stream, YouTube’s documented workflow includes a preview followed by Go live. Complete that action unless your configured auto-start workflow takes care of starting the stream.
- Verify the result. Confirm that YouTube shows the broadcast as live and that viewers can open its watch page. After the event ends on YouTube, stop the encoder output as advised in YouTube live streaming tips.
Choose the right start workflow

YouTube’s live stream settings guidance says that when auto-start and auto-stop are on, you can start or stop streaming from the encoder. Reusing stream settings also copies those auto-start and auto-stop selections, so check them when setting up the replacement stream.

Troubleshoot a restart that does not connect
- YouTube reports a key or encoder startup error: Check the stream key in Live Control Room and paste the correct key into the playout service. See YouTube’s live stream troubleshooting guidance.
- The connection fails over RTMPS: Verify that the service is using the expected RTMPS URL and that its encoder supports RTMPS. YouTube recommends RTMPS; see Encrypt your stream using RTMPS.
- The encoder is sending, but the scheduled event is not live: Look for the preview in Live Control Room and complete the scheduled stream’s Go live action if required.
- The service shows an old job, retry, or ended state: YouTube’s public instructions do not specify how an unnamed third-party service should restart its job or retry a failed output. Use that vendor’s documentation or contact its support rather than assuming a particular button or retry policy.
