There is no single YouTube setting that restarts every kind of failed ASMR stream. YouTube’s auto-start and auto-stop controls manage when a broadcast starts or stops; they do not, by themselves, relaunch a crashed encoder, restart a stopped media loop, or repair a lost internet connection. Reliable recovery means identifying which part of the chain failed and automating that part.
What “restart” means in a looping stream
A YouTube encoder stream depends on several pieces working together: the ASMR video must keep playing or looping, the encoder must keep running and sending it, the network must carry the feed, and YouTube must have the right broadcast active. A failure at one layer may leave the others running.
- Loop stopped: The source video or playlist reached its end or the player stopped. The encoder may still be open, but it has no continuing content to send.
- Encoder stopped: The streaming application or hardware encoder closed, crashed, or stopped sending. YouTube cannot relaunch the encoder through its stream lifecycle settings.
- Connection dropped: The encoder may still be running, but the network interruption prevents a usable feed from reaching YouTube.
- Broadcast ended: The YouTube event may have stopped or ended. Reconnecting an encoder does not necessarily restart that same broadcast; the broadcast’s current state matters.
YouTube’s encoder workflow sends a feed using a stream URL and stream key. YouTube documents both software and dedicated hardware encoders as ways to provide that feed. See YouTube’s encoder setup guide.
Configure YouTube’s start and stop controls
YouTube Studio’s live-stream settings include auto-start and auto-stop controls for encoder streams. These determine whether starting or stopping the encoder also starts or stops the YouTube broadcast. They are not a watchdog for the encoder, source player, or internet connection, and the documentation does not promise that a failed process will be restarted.

- In YouTube Studio, create or schedule the live stream and open its stream settings.
- Review the auto-start and auto-stop options for that stream. Confirm the controls are available and enabled as intended in your account; availability and interface details can vary.
- In your encoder, select the matching YouTube stream and configure its stream URL and key. Keep the key private.
- Start the encoder and verify the feed in YouTube’s Live Control Room before relying on the configuration unattended.
For a normal encoder stream, the settings can reduce manual steps in the YouTube start/stop lifecycle. For scheduled events, the encoder and the Live Control Room may need coordinated actions depending on those settings. The OBS Project’s YouTube streaming guide describes a workflow in which the encoder preview is available before going live, but its UI guidance may be outdated; use YouTube Studio’s current controls as authoritative.
Reusing stream settings copies the auto-start and auto-stop selections, according to YouTube’s live-stream settings documentation. Check copied settings rather than assuming a new event has the behavior you want.

Automate failures outside YouTube’s controls
Keep the source loop alive
Configure the media player or playlist itself to repeat, and verify it continues after the source reaches its end. If the player exits or the playlist stalls, YouTube’s auto-start setting will not restart it. The needed recovery belongs in the player, encoder workflow, or operating-system process supervision.
Restart a stopped encoder process
If the encoder crashes or exits, use that encoder’s own recovery feature or an operating-system process supervisor to detect the exit and relaunch it. The relaunch must restore the intended source, stream destination, and stream key. Test what happens when YouTube’s broadcast is still active; blindly launching another encoder instance can cause a conflict rather than recovery.

Recover from a connection interruption
A temporary disconnect may recover when the encoder reconnects, but the YouTube setting alone does not guarantee it. Confirm that the encoder is sending data again and inspect YouTube’s feed health. If the internet link is down, restarting the encoder repeatedly cannot restore the feed until connectivity returns.
Handle a broadcast that has ended
First determine whether the broadcast is still active or has ended. If it has ended, the next action may require a new or scheduled broadcast rather than reconnecting to the old event. YouTube’s Live Streaming API distinguishes a liveBroadcast event from a liveStream feed; its overview describes recurring or scheduled events and separate stream resources, but is not a complete restart recipe. API automation must account for authorization, resource lifecycle state, encoder state, and API errors. See Google’s overview of broadcasts and streams.

Compare the recovery approaches
| Approach | What it can address | What it does not establish | Complexity and risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| YouTube Studio auto-start/auto-stop | Starting or stopping the YouTube broadcast in coordination with the encoder. | Restarting a stopped source player or crashed encoder, repairing the network, or guaranteeing recovery after an ended event. | Lowest setup burden, but it cannot cover failures outside broadcast lifecycle controls. |
| Encoder or operating-system automation | Relauching a player or encoder process when that process stops, if configured to detect and recover from the failure. | Restoring a broken internet connection or ensuring that the intended YouTube broadcast is still available. | Requires configuration and monitoring; an indiscriminate restart can create conflicts or act on the wrong event. |
| API-based broadcast control | Managing broadcast resources and their associated feed resources through an implementation that handles their states. | A ready-made, universally reliable restart procedure; the API overview does not provide one. | Most involved: authorization, lifecycle handling, encoder coordination, and API error recovery must all be implemented. |
No particular third-party automation tool’s reliability or support is established here. Choose automation based on the failure you need to recover from, and monitor both the encoder and the YouTube broadcast rather than treating a successful process launch as proof of a working stream.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Verify recovery and troubleshoot failures
After a recovery attempt, check both ends. An encoder interface that says “streaming” only indicates its own status; confirm that YouTube receives a feed and reports it healthy. YouTube’s live-stream error messages guide describes checking messages next to the stream health indicator in Live Control Room or the Live Dashboard.

- Confirm the local ASMR source is still playing and looping.
- Confirm the encoder process is active and sending data to the intended stream.
- Check the YouTube Live Control Room preview and stream health indicator for feed errors.
- Determine whether the existing broadcast is active or ended before starting another broadcast or encoder session.
| Symptom | Likely layer to check | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Encoder is running but the picture or sound has stopped | Source player or playlist | Check whether the file reached its end, playback stalled, or looping is disabled; restore the source loop before changing broadcast settings. |
| Encoder application is closed | Encoder process | Relaunch it manually or through configured process supervision, then verify it is sending to the intended YouTube stream. |
| Encoder reports a connection problem | Network and feed | Restore connectivity, check that the encoder resumes sending, and confirm YouTube’s stream health. |
| Encoder sends data but YouTube does not show a usable live preview | Stream selection, key, or broadcast state | Check that the encoder uses the intended stream URL and key, then confirm the broadcast has not ended or been stopped. |
| A second start appears to create a conflicting session | Duplicate process or broadcast lifecycle | Stop and inspect the unintended session; establish which broadcast should remain active before restarting automation. |
Test recovery with a private or unlisted stream where appropriate, before depending on it for a public, unattended broadcast. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived after they end; that is an archive rule, not a restart or uptime guarantee. See YouTube’s encoder setup guide.
