It depends on whether you mean a broadcast that is still live or completed gaming VODs in a playlist. For a live broadcast, use YouTube’s rewind or seek controls if DVR is available; you cannot rewind to before the broadcast began. For a playlist of completed VODs, open its first video and move that video’s playhead to the start if it resumes partway through. YouTube’s published playlist guidance does not describe one universal button that resets an entire playlist on every device.
First, identify what you are watching
“YouTube Live” can mean a broadcast that is currently in progress, a recording of a broadcast that has ended, or a playlist containing several completed recordings. The controls differ:
- Still live: rewind within the available live DVR window.
- Completed VOD: choose the video you want, then seek that video to its start.
- Queue: a temporary watch-next arrangement, not the same as a saved playlist.
Rewind a gaming stream that is still live
- Open the live stream in YouTube.
- Use the player’s seek bar or rewind control to move back toward the beginning of the available DVR window. YouTube says DVR lets viewers pause, rewind and continue during a live stream when the feature is available (YouTube Help: Turn on DVR on live streams).
- If you cannot rewind far enough, DVR may be unavailable or limited for that stream. Viewers cannot seek to a point before the broadcast started.
Limits on live rewind
YouTube warns that DVR may be limited or unavailable on live streams longer than 12 hours. Apple TV, Apple AirPlay and older app versions have lower limits. If the stream has been running for a long time, the beginning may no longer be reachable through DVR, even if rewind works for a more recent portion of the broadcast. The 12-hour figure is YouTube’s stated product limitation, not a guarantee that every stream under that duration has DVR.
Start a completed VOD playlist from its first video
- Open the playlist and select its first gaming VOD.
- If the selected video resumes at a later timestamp, use the player’s seek control to move to the beginning of that video.
- If the VOD you want is not first, reorder the playlist or, on a watch page, adjust its temporary order from the playlist panel. YouTube documents playlist reordering in its help for creating and managing playlists and watching playlists.
Reordering changes which item comes first; it does not rewind the video currently playing. The official playlist guidance cited here does not establish a universal “restart playlist” control, so the exact available gestures and labels can vary by device.

Playlist versus queue: why your order may not stick
A saved playlist and a queue are different. YouTube says a queue on a computer does not remain after you close the browser; to keep videos for later, save them to a playlist instead (YouTube Help: watch videos in a queue). If you expected a sequence to be available again, check whether you built a queue rather than saved a playlist.
Why a completed live broadcast may not be available as a VOD
Replaying a live broadcast after it ends depends on recording and playback availability, not just the playlist order. YouTube’s Live API documentation describes the recordFromStart and enableDvr settings and their relationship to post-broadcast playback (YouTube Live Streaming API: liveBroadcasts). If a stream has ended but no replay is available, selecting or reordering playlist items cannot create a recording that was not made available.

Quick fixes when restart or rewind does not work
- Can’t rewind to the actual start of a live stream: DVR cannot go earlier than the broadcast start, and long-stream or device limits may reduce the available rewind window.
- The playlist opens on the wrong VOD: select the first item explicitly, or reorder the playlist if you want a different VOD first.
- The right VOD opens but starts partway through: seek within that video to its beginning.
- Your sequence disappears after closing the browser: it may have been a queue; save the videos to a playlist to keep them for later.
- A past live stream has no replay: check whether a recording is available; playlist controls cannot restore an unavailable VOD.
