How to Reset YouTube Settings: History, Recommendations, Autoplay and More

YouTube has no single reset button. Find the right way to reset recommendations, history, Autoplay, Restricted Mode, privacy controls, or the app without deleting unrelated account data.

YouTube has no single reset button for ordinary viewer accounts. To get a cleaner, more predictable experience, reset the specific thing that is causing trouble: recommendations, watch or search history, Autoplay, Restricted Mode, privacy controls, or the app itself. These actions have different effects, so start with the least destructive option.

Menu names can vary by device, account, and app version. The paths below reflect YouTube’s current help guidance as of October 2026.

Choose the reset that matches the problem

Your problem What to change
Irrelevant Home page recommendations Remove unwanted history items, adjust recommendation feedback, or delete watch and search history.
Unwanted search-box suggestions Delete the relevant search entries or pause YouTube search history.
Videos play automatically Change Autoplay on the affected device; its setting may differ on other devices.
Mature content is unavailable Check Restricted Mode and whether a parent, administrator, carrier, or network is enforcing it.
Language or appearance seems wrong Review YouTube, account, and device preferences separately; there is no universal reset for them.
The app freezes or playback fails Update or restart the app, then troubleshoot local app, browser, or network problems.
A child’s setting is locked Check Family Link or Family Center controls rather than trying to override the setting in the child’s app.
A setting changed on one device but not another Check whether it is account-, device-, browser-, or network-level.

Before you delete history

  • Confirm that YouTube is using the Google Account whose activity you intend to change. History controls for a signed-in account are not the same as clearing local browser data.
  • Choose whether to remove one item, a date range, or all available history. Review the date range and confirmation text before accepting: deleting watch history for a selected period can also delete search history from that period, and vice versa. YouTube’s history instructions describe the interaction.
  • Deleting watch or search history is not the same as deleting your account. It does not erase subscriptions, playlists, likes, purchases, comments, or uploads.
  • History deletion removes the influence of the deleted activity; it does not erase every signal YouTube may use for recommendations or promise an instant, completely neutral feed.

Reset recommendations without deleting everything

When only a few recommendations are wrong, adjust those signals first. YouTube says watch and search activity can influence recommendations, search results, notifications, and suggested videos elsewhere in the service. Some controls require you to be signed in. YouTube’s recommendation controls explain the available feedback options.

  1. Remove an unwanted video from watch history or an unwanted query from search history.
  2. On a recommendation you do not want, choose Not interested. For a channel you do not want recommended, choose Don’t recommend channel. Show fewer Shorts may also be available.
  3. Unsubscribe from channels you no longer want in your subscriptions, and remove likes or saved items if you no longer want those signals or lists.
  4. If earlier feedback is steering recommendations in the wrong direction, review Google activity and clear prior recommendation feedback where that control is available.
  5. If the feed remains broadly wrong, delete the relevant watch and search history. Pause history temporarily when you do not want future viewing or searching to affect personalization; resume it afterward if you want history-based recommendations and convenience.

Clearing history can reduce useful personalization as well as unwanted signals. When little relevant history is available, YouTube may show few or no Home page recommendations. New activity and other signals can still shape what appears.

Clear or pause watch history

On a computer

  1. Go to My Activity and sign in to the Google Account used with YouTube.
  2. Open YouTube History, then select Manage history.
  3. Delete individual items, or use DELETE to remove activity for a selected period. Check the confirmation details before you proceed.
  4. To stop recording, open the Controls tab and turn off the relevant YouTube history controls. Watched videos, searches, and voice/audio activity have separate controls.
  5. To set automatic deletion, choose Auto-delete, select a time range, continue, and confirm.

On Android and iPhone or iPad

  1. In the YouTube app, tap your profile picture, then Settings, then Manage all history.
  2. Use the search, calendar, delete, or individual-item controls to find and remove activity. Open Controls to stop including watched videos or searches.
  3. If you are signed out or see a different menu, look under profile picture, Settings, then History & privacy for Clear watch history or Pause watch history.

YouTube documents the account-history steps for Android and iPhone and iPad. If labels differ, use the route that appears in your app; menus can vary by account state and version.

On a TV or game console

  1. Open the YouTube app’s left-hand menu and choose Settings.
  2. Select Pause watch history or Clear watch history, then confirm.

See YouTube’s watch-history guidance for TV and console controls.

Clear or pause search history

You can remove one search without clearing everything, delete searches for a period, or pause search history. Deleting an entry removes it from search-box suggestions and stops that entry from influencing recommendations. Searches made while search history is paused are not saved. YouTube says searches made in Incognito mode are not saved to YouTube search history; this is not a promise of internet anonymity or a statement about all device or network records.

  1. For a single unwanted search, open YouTube search and remove that entry from the recent-search list if the option is shown, or find and delete it in Manage all history.
  2. For a date range or all searches, open YouTube History in Google My Activity, choose the delete control, and review the confirmation screen carefully. A selected period may include watch history as well as searches.
  3. To stop future searches from being saved, open YouTube History’s Controls tab and pause the search-history control.
  4. For temporary searches you do not want added to YouTube search history, use YouTube’s Incognito mode where available.

Turn Autoplay on or off

Autoplay controls whether another video starts after the current one; it does not clear history. YouTube allows the setting to differ by device, so change it wherever the behavior is unwanted. YouTube’s Autoplay help lists the platform controls and exceptions.

Mobile app

  1. Tap your profile picture, then Settings, then Autoplay.
  2. Turn Autoplay on or off. You can also use the Autoplay switch on a video’s watch screen.

Computer

Open a video and use the Autoplay switch in the player.

TV or game console

Open YouTube Settings, scroll to Autoplay, and change the setting.

Scrolling away from the player or entering a comment or search can prevent the next video from starting even when Autoplay is enabled. YouTube documents inactivity limits of 30 minutes on mobile data and four hours on Wi-Fi; these are playback behavior limits, not reset controls. Supervised-account parents may control Autoplay, and YouTube’s current help says it is off by default for users aged 13–17. Defaults and available controls can depend on account type and current policy.

Google TV Streamer 4K - Fast Streaming Entertainment on Your Device with Voice Search Remote - Watch Movies, Shows, Live, and Netflix in HDR - Smart Home Control - 32 GB of Storage - Hazel
  • The Google TV Streamer (4K) delivers your favorite entertainment quickly, easily, and personalized to you[1,2]
  • HDMI 2.1 cable required (sold separately)
  • See movies and TV shows from all your services right from your home screen[2]; and find new things to watch with tailored recommendations for everyone in your home based on their interests and viewing habits
  • Watch live TV and access over 800 free channels from Pluto TV, Tubi, and more[3]; if you find an interesting show or movie on your TV, mobile app, or Google search, you can easily add it to your watchlist, so it’s ready when you are[2]
  • Up to 4K HDR with Dolby Vision delivers captivating, true-to-life detail[4]; and you can connect speakers that support Dolby Atmos for more immersive 3D sound

If the control is unavailable or turns itself back on, it may be enforced outside your YouTube account. Check these possibilities:

  • A school, library, workplace, or other administrator manages the device or network.
  • A parent uses Family Link or the account is supervised.
  • A mobile carrier applies a content filter.
  • DNS, router, or other network-level filtering applies.
  • A browser or device profile has its own restriction.

Restricted Mode works at the browser or device level, so changing it in one browser or profile may not change it elsewhere. It is an optional content filter, not the same as an individual video’s age restriction; comments may be unavailable while it is on.

Review privacy and account-level data

To review the YouTube-specific privacy controls documented by Google, sign in to YouTube on desktop or mobile web, select your profile picture, then select Your Data in YouTube. YouTube documents this page for the web; it may not appear as the same entry point in every native-app version. It provides access to information and controls related to video, playlist, and subscription privacy, purchases, and comments. See Your Data in YouTube.

Account-level privacy and activity settings are separate from local app preferences. Clearing browser data or reinstalling the app does not necessarily change upload visibility, playlist privacy, subscription privacy, comments, purchases, or Google Account activity. Review Google Account activity controls separately if your concern extends beyond YouTube History.

Troubleshoot the app or browser when settings are not the cause

If YouTube freezes, fails to play, or behaves inconsistently, try local troubleshooting before deleting account history. YouTube recommends measures including updating, restarting, clearing cache or cookies, and disabling extensions for technical problems. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance also covers browser compatibility, device permissions, DNS, and network speed.

  1. Force-close YouTube or the browser, reopen it, and restart the device.
  2. Update the YouTube app, browser, and device software.
  3. In a browser, clear cache and cookies if appropriate. This can sign you out of websites and remove locally stored preferences; its effects vary by browser and device. It is not a way to delete YouTube History stored with your Google Account.
  4. Test YouTube in a private or incognito browser window and disable extensions, especially ad blockers, if playback is affected.
  5. Reinstall the YouTube app if the problem persists and the device supports it. Reinstalling may fix local app problems but does not erase server-side history.
  6. For a TV or streaming device, disconnect power, wait at least 30 seconds, then reconnect it.
  7. If playback still fails, check network speed, DNS configuration, browser compatibility, and the app’s data permissions.

If the change did not work

  • Verify that you changed the setting on the intended Google Account, profile, and device.
  • Try another browser or device to distinguish an account-level issue from a local one.
  • Check whether Autoplay or Restricted Mode needs to be changed separately on the affected device or browser profile.
  • For a supervised account, check Family Link or Family Center; for a managed device or network, contact the parent or administrator.
  • Update the app and operating system, then test again. If a restriction persists on a managed network, ask its administrator whether filtering is enforced there.

What a YouTube history reset does not reset

Deleting watch or search history is a targeted activity change, not an account wipe. It does not by itself delete your subscriptions, playlists, likes, uploads, comments, purchases, or privacy choices. Those items have their own controls. Likewise, clearing an app cache or reinstalling YouTube addresses local software behavior rather than the history stored with your Google Account.

Resetting YouTube for a child

Do not try to override a locked child-account setting from the child’s app. Depending on the account and setup, a parent may manage controls through Family Link or Family Center. For the documented Family Center flow to clear a child’s history across linked devices, the linked parent account opens YouTube, goes to You, then Settings, then Family Center, selects the child’s profile, chooses Clear history, and confirms with CLEAR. A parent can also disable Autoplay for a child, in which case the child cannot turn it back on. See YouTube’s supervised-account guidance.
