Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteIf someone is in immediate physical danger, contact local emergency services now; do not wait for a social media platform to respond. Otherwise, report the specific post, message, image, or account through the platform, save information that is already available if it is safe, and contact police or a child-protection service when the conduct may involve a serious threat, stalking, sexual exploitation, or a crime. The right official route depends on your country and, in some places, your state or region.
Choose the right route before doing anything else
A platform report and a report to an official service do different jobs. A platform can review material under its own rules and may take action on content or an account. Police or a specialist child-protection service can assess a safety risk or suspected crime under local procedures. You may need one route or both; one does not replace the other.
| Situation | First route | Also consider |
|---|---|---|
| Someone may be physically harmed imminently | Local emergency services | Tell the platform after seeking urgent help, if doing so is safe. |
| Repeated insults, humiliation, or other bullying without immediate danger | Report the relevant content or account to the platform | Tell a trusted adult or school if a young person is targeted; contact local police if threats, stalking, or other suspected crimes are involved. |
| A specific threat of violence or stalking | Emergency services if danger is immediate; otherwise local police through a non-emergency route | Report the threatening content or account to the platform. |
| Sextortion or sexual exploitation | Stop communicating and do not pay; contact local police or the official child-protection service appropriate to the person’s age and location | Report the account or content to the platform. In the UK, a person under 18 can report online child sexual abuse to CEOP. |
| An image or video appears to show child sexual abuse | Use the official police or specialist reporting route for your location | In the UK, the Internet Watch Foundation accepts reports of online child sexual abuse images or videos. Do not download, copy, or forward the material. |
These are routing distinctions, not legal judgments. A cruel or harmful post does not automatically meet the legal definition of a crime. Local law, the content, the surrounding circumstances, and the risk to the person affected all matter.
When deciding where to start, ask four questions: Is anyone in immediate danger? What kind of harm is involved—bullying, a threat, stalking, or sexual exploitation? Is the person affected a minor? Where are they located, and which official services cover that place? These answers help distinguish an emergency call from a non-emergency police report, a platform flag, a school contact, or a specialist child-protection report. You do not need to settle the legal classification yourself before asking the appropriate service for help.

Keep the scope of each route in mind. A platform report asks a company to review content or an account under its rules. An official report asks the relevant authority to assess a safety concern or suspected offence. It can be appropriate to report to both, especially if content remains online while there is also a serious threat or risk to a child.
1. Deal with immediate danger first
If a message indicates someone may soon be attacked, is being followed, is at a location where violence may occur, or faces another immediate danger to life or safety, contact emergency services where the person is located. Give the dispatcher the location, what the threat says, who may be at risk, and any timing or weapon details you already know. Do not delay to gather screenshots or to see whether the platform acts.
Emergency numbers vary by country. Police.uk says to call 999 in the UK for immediate danger to life or threatened violence. That number is UK-specific; elsewhere, use the local emergency number or official emergency service. If you are not sure whether a threat is imminent, describe what you know to the local emergency service or police and let them assess urgency.
If the threatened person is a child, tell a responsible caregiver or other trusted adult when that can be done safely. If the caregiver may be involved in the abuse or the child would be put at greater risk by telling them, contact police or the relevant child-protection service directly.
Do not make an online platform’s response time part of your safety plan. The reviewed guidance does not establish a universal review deadline, and platform processes can differ or change. If new information makes the danger more immediate, contact emergency services even if you have already submitted a platform or police report.
2. Preserve available information safely
Information can help a platform, police, school, or child-protection service understand what happened. Save what is already accessible if it is safe and lawful to do so, but do not make evidence collection a condition of asking for help. UK Police says a person can report a threatening message without first collecting screenshots, messages, video, or photos.
Details that can help
- The platform and the account name, profile link, or user ID, if visible.
- The date and time of the message or incident, including the time zone if known.
- The exact words or conduct, described plainly, and whether it happened once or repeatedly.
- Copies or screenshots of relevant messages or posts that you can access safely.
- Any known information about who is at risk, where they are, and whether the sender knows their location.
Keep the information in a place the person causing harm cannot access. Do not reply to or forward cyberbullying content. Do not edit a screenshot in a way that changes its meaning; if you need to redact sensitive details before sharing it more widely, keep the original secure. Share saved material only with the platform or appropriate officials, not with friends or public accounts.

For suspected sexual images involving a child, do not download, copy, save, or redistribute the material to create a record. Follow the instructions of police or the official specialist reporting service in your country. If you already have a link or account detail without handling the image, provide that information through the official reporting route. Procedures differ, so do not assume that a general screenshot rule is safe for this material.
Preservation should be proportionate to the situation: record details that are already available, but do not put yourself at risk, continue a conversation to obtain more evidence, or delay a report while trying to build a complete file. Useful information may include identifiers and a straightforward account of what happened; authorities can tell you whether they need anything further. If material is disappearing or access is changing, report what you know rather than assuming there is no point without a copy.
3. Report the specific content or account to the platform
Use the platform’s in-app or website reporting control to flag the particular post, message, image, or account. Reporting the specific item gives the service a clearer basis to review what happened than a general complaint alone. The controls and categories differ between services and can change, so look for the current report or safety option attached to the content or profile rather than relying on a menu path that may be out of date.
- Open the post, message, profile, or account involved.
- Choose the service’s report option and select the closest accurate reason, such as bullying, a threat, harassment, sexual exploitation, or child safety.
- Provide a concise factual description. Include dates, repeated incidents, and relevant account identifiers when available.
- Submit the report and note any confirmation or reference the service provides. Do not assume that submission guarantees removal or a particular response time.
- Use the platform’s blocking or contact-limiting controls if they will help stop unwanted contact and do not create an additional safety risk.
StopBullying.gov provides reporting and safety links for services including YouTube, TikTok, Snapchat, Instagram, Facebook, Discord, X, and Twitch. Police.uk also explains that reporting to a social media company can request review or removal of offensive content, or action on an account. Platform enforcement depends on the service’s rules and review; it is not a substitute for emergency help or an official report about a serious threat.
If you cannot find the control, use the service’s current official help or safety information rather than assuming all apps use the same menu. StopBullying.gov’s directory can be a starting point for the listed services in the United States, while India’s National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal links to major intermediaries for users in India. Those resources are not universal directories. If you are reporting a specific message, include the relevant account or content identifier where available and avoid adding speculation about the sender’s motives.

4. Report threats, stalking, or suspected crimes to local police
Use emergency services for immediate danger. For a serious but non-immediate threat, stalking, or suspected crime, contact the police through the local non-emergency reporting route. Police.uk describes online reporting and police station options in the UK. In another country, find the official police service for the place where the threatened person is located; reporting processes and legal thresholds vary.

Tell police what happened, when it happened, who is at risk, and what information you have. If you have not saved messages or screenshots, report anyway. Do not confront the sender or attempt to investigate them yourself. If you are reporting on behalf of someone else, explain your relationship to the person and whether they know you are contacting police.
U.S. StopBullying.gov identifies threats of violence, stalking, and child sexual abuse material as examples that may warrant law-enforcement reporting. It also cautions that laws differ among states. GOV.UK distinguishes illegal harms from harmful behaviour that may not meet a criminal threshold. Neither source establishes the legal status of a particular incident elsewhere; police or a local legal professional can assess the applicable law and facts.

“Not sure whether it is a crime” is not a reason to wait if you are concerned about safety. Describe the conduct and its context to the local police service and let them assess the appropriate response. Some harmful or abusive online behaviour may violate a platform’s rules without meeting the local criminal threshold; conversely, a platform decision does not determine whether an incident should be reported to police.
5. If the situation involves sextortion
Sextortion involves using threats, often threats to share intimate images or information, to pressure someone into sending money, more images, or other compliance. Treat the threat seriously, but do not pay or continue negotiating. UK Police advises people reporting sextortion to stop communicating and says payment cannot guarantee the threats will stop.
- Stop replying to the person making demands. Do not send money, further images, passwords, or personal details.
- Keep account access where possible rather than deleting the account; UK Police advises preserving the account. Use platform controls to block or report the person if safe.
- Contact local police or the official child-protection service if a minor is involved. In the UK, a person under 18 can report online child sexual abuse to CEOP.
- If someone threatens to publish a child’s sexual image, do not download or forward the image. Report the account and use the official police or specialist route for your country.
If the person is in immediate physical danger, use emergency services first. If the threat is non-immediate, official police and child-protection routes can advise on the right next steps for the jurisdiction. Do not assume that paying, bargaining, or deleting an account will make the threat disappear.
A person targeted by sextortion may feel pressured to respond quickly or conceal what is happening. The practical priority is to stop engaging with the demands and seek help through official channels; paying cannot guarantee an end to threats. If the person affected is under 18, involve a safe adult or official child-protection service where appropriate. If telling a particular adult could place the child at greater risk, contact police or child protection directly instead.

Cyberbullying affecting a young person
Ask the young person what is happening and whether they feel physically unsafe. Help them report the content to the platform and, where appropriate, tell a trusted adult or school. A school may be able to address conduct affecting a student. StopBullying.gov notes that many U.S. states require schools to address cyberbullying under policy, but rules differ by state; this is not a universal rule for schools in other countries.

Online child sexual abuse or exploitation
Use the official child-protection or police route for the country where the child is located. The UK has distinct routes: CEOP is identified for people under 18 reporting online child sexual abuse, and the Internet Watch Foundation is identified for reports of online images or videos depicting child sexual abuse. These are UK-specific services, not universal portals.
If you are outside the UK, use the official national or regional child-protection authority or a recognized child sexual abuse reporting hotline. If uncertain, start with local police or government child-protection guidance. Do not upload suspected abuse imagery to an unrelated form, group chat, or social account.
For a child experiencing non-sexual bullying, the school can be an additional support route, not the only one. Rules and responsibilities differ by state and country, so do not assume a school can resolve every online incident or that its involvement replaces police or child-protection help where a serious safety concern exists. If there is an immediate threat, use emergency services first.
7. Use country-specific reporting routes where they apply
United States
StopBullying.gov offers practical cyberbullying reporting guidance, links to platform safety and reporting pages, and advice to involve law enforcement for serious categories such as threats of violence, stalking, and child sexual abuse material. Its page was last reviewed December 11, 2024. School obligations vary by state, and local authorities decide how applicable law fits an incident.
United Kingdom
Police.uk explains when to call 999 for immediate danger, says evidence need not be gathered before reporting a threatening message, and describes police reporting routes. For sextortion, it advises stopping communication, not paying, and preserving the account. GOV.UK’s online harms guidance, published June 29, 2021, distinguishes illegal conduct from harmful conduct that may not be illegal and points to the Internet Watch Foundation for online child sexual abuse images. These services and numbers apply in the UK; check official local guidance for the relevant part of the UK.
India
India’s National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal provides country-specific routes for cybercrime reporting and information about reporting abuse to social media intermediaries. Its intermediary-reporting page was last updated February 2, 2024. Use the portal for reports within its remit in India; it is not a global reporting service or a replacement for emergency services.
These examples are not interchangeable. A UK emergency number or UK specialist service does not apply worldwide, and India’s portal is intended for reporting within its remit in India. If you live elsewhere, use official local police, government, or child-protection guidance. The source material does not establish a single global emergency number, universal child-abuse hotline, or common legal definition of cyberbullying.

What to say when making a report
A short, factual account is usually easier to act on than speculation about the sender’s motives. You can organize your report around these points:
- What happened: the conduct or words, stated as specifically as you can.
- When and where online: dates, times, platform, and relevant account or content identifiers.
- Who is at risk: the person’s age if relevant, location, and whether the sender may know where to find them.
- What you have done: platform report, blocking, school contact, or other official report, if any.
- What you need now: urgent safety help, assessment of a threat, support for a child, or review of reported content.
Separate what you directly saw from what someone else told you. If a detail is uncertain, say so rather than guessing. If the situation changes or a threat becomes imminent, switch to emergency services instead of waiting for an update on a previous platform or police report.
You can make the account brief without leaving out important context: describe the specific incident, say whether it has happened repeatedly, and identify the accounts or content involved where possible. If you are reporting as a witness, make clear what you observed yourself and what the affected person told you. Do not present an assumption about identity or motive as a fact.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I report cyberbullying on social media?
Use the platform’s current in-app or website reporting control on the specific post, message, or account, and select the closest accurate reason. If a young person is targeted, consider telling a trusted adult or school as well. If the situation includes a serious threat, stalking, or another suspected crime, contact local police; use emergency services if there is immediate danger.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteHow do I report someone threatening me online?
If the threat suggests immediate physical danger, contact your local emergency service now rather than waiting for a platform response. For a serious but non-immediate threat, use your local police non-emergency reporting route and report the content or account to the platform. You can report even if you have not saved screenshots or messages.
What should I save before reporting an online threat?
If it is safe, note the platform, account name or user ID, date and time, what was said or posted, and any relevant messages or screenshots already available. Do not delay a police report to collect evidence. For suspected sexual images involving a child, do not download, copy, or forward the material; follow official police or specialist reporting instructions.
Where do I report sextortion?
Stop communicating with the person making demands and do not pay; payment cannot guarantee the threats will stop. Report the account or content to the platform and contact local police or the official child-protection service appropriate to the person’s age and location. In the UK, a person under 18 can report online child sexual abuse to CEOP.
Who do I tell if someone shares sexual images of a child?
Use the official police or specialist child-protection reporting route for the country where the child is located, and do not download, copy, or redistribute the image. In the UK, the Internet Watch Foundation accepts reports of online child sexual abuse images or videos; CEOP is identified for people under 18 reporting online child sexual abuse. These are UK-specific routes.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Is every harmful social media post a crime?
No. A post may be cruel, harmful, or against a platform’s rules without meeting the local legal threshold for a crime. The law and reporting process vary by location and circumstances. Describe what happened to the appropriate local authority rather than trying to make a legal determination yourself.
The Bottom Line
Put immediate safety first: contact local emergency services for imminent danger. Otherwise, report the specific content or account to the platform, preserve available details only when safe, and contact local police or child-protection services when threats, stalking, sextortion, or suspected child sexual abuse are involved. The right service depends on the person’s age, the type of harm, and where they are located.
