If someone is pretending to be you on social media, report the profile through the platform’s own reporting tools. Start with the profile’s report menu when it offers an impersonation option; if you are the person being impersonated and that route does not fit, use the platform’s official Help Center form. Save the account’s exact username or profile URL and links to relevant posts before you submit. A report prompts review, but it does not guarantee that the account will be removed.

The right route can depend on whether you are the person being impersonated, an authorized representative, or a bystander. It can also depend on the platform and, for TikTok’s online forms, the account’s region. The safest approach is to start from the current official app or Help Center, follow the prompts that match your role, and provide identity or authority documents only if an official form requests them.

Before you report: save evidence and identify your role

Record the account’s exact username and profile URL, along with links to posts or messages that show it is pretending to be someone. If you can, save screenshots for your own records. The links help reviewers locate the material even if the account changes its name or removes a post. When the form asks for details, describe the specific conduct that makes the profile appear to be claiming your identity; avoid relying on a vague statement when you can point to a profile or post.

Decide who is filing: the person being impersonated, someone authorized to act for them, or a bystander. Platforms may offer different reporting routes for each role. An account that claims to represent a business or organization may need a route intended for organizations or trademark issues, rather than a form designed for one person’s identity. Check the official platform options instead of assuming an individual-person form applies.

Roku Streaming Stick HD with Voice Remote
  • HD streaming made simple: With America’s number 1 TV streaming platform,* exploring popular apps—plus tons of free movies, shows, and live TV—is as easy as it is fun. *Based on hours streamed—Hypothesis Group
  • Compact without compromises: The sleek design of Roku Streaming Stick won’t block neighboring HDMI ports, and it even powers from your TV alone, plugging into the back and staying out of sight. No wall outlet, no extra cords, no clutter.
  • No more juggling remotes: Power up your TV, adjust the volume, and control your Roku device with one remote. Use your voice to quickly search, play entertainment, and more.
  • Shows on the go: Take your TV to-go when traveling—without needing to log into someone else’s device.
  • TV, simplified: With setup that only takes minutes, a simple-to-navigate Home Screen, and an uncluttered remote control that does all you need—Roku makes it easier to watch the TV you love.
  • Use only the platform’s official app, Help Center, or form. Do not send identity documents to someone who contacts you and claims they can get the account removed.
  • Provide identification or proof of authority only when the official form requests it. Requirements differ by platform and route.
  • If the account also uses your photos or other copyrighted work, a copyright report may address that separate rights issue. It is not a substitute for reporting impersonation.

Keep a record of what you submitted and any confirmation or case details the platform displays. If the account is changing its username or posts, the exact profile and content links you saved may help you keep track of what you reported. Do not assume screenshots replace the platform’s requested fields or documents: submit the information the official form asks for.

Choose the reporting route that fits your situation

Platform Person being impersonated Representative or bystander Geography and documents
Instagram Use the profile’s report menu if an impersonation option is offered, or find Instagram’s current Help Center article, “Report an account that’s impersonating you.” Follow the eligibility and prompts on Instagram’s official route; do not assume another person can file the same form. Specific current form requirements are not stated in Instagram’s published guidance.
Facebook Use Facebook’s imposter-account reporting route and choose the option matching the case, such as someone pretending to be you. The route includes choices for someone pretending to be a friend or a business/organization. Specific current form requirements are not stated in Facebook’s published guidance.
TikTok Report from the profile, or use the online form for the account’s region. The profile flow distinguishes impersonating “Me” from “Celebrity.” Online instructions differ for U.S. and non-U.S. accounts. The U.S. form asks for identification when requested.
X Use the personal impersonation form; it asks you to sign in to the account being impersonated. An authorized representative uses a separate form and is asked for authority documentation. A bystander reports from the profile and does not need an X account. The personal form requests government-ID verification. The representative route requests proof of authority.

This comparison is a starting point, not a substitute for the live form. Platform forms and on-screen labels can change. Follow the current prompts on the official route, especially if your role or situation does not match the example you expected. Instagram’s and Facebook’s current detailed form fields are not verified here, so this guide does not list document requirements or promise that a particular reporter can use a specific form on those platforms.

There is no single cross-platform process. TikTok describes an in-app profile flow and separate U.S. and non-U.S. online-form instructions. X explicitly separates reports by the person impersonated, a representative, and a bystander. Instagram’s and Facebook’s current detailed form requirements were not established in the published guidance. Do not infer that one platform’s anonymity, documentation, appeal, or review practices apply to another.

How to report impersonation on Instagram

If you can open the account, use its report menu and select the option about impersonation or pretending to be someone if it appears. For a dedicated route, search Instagram’s Help Center for the current article titled Report an account that’s impersonating you and follow its current eligibility and identity prompts.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not assume that a friend or bystander can submit the same form as the person being impersonated. Instagram’s current detailed form instructions and requirements are not established here, so use the official page’s prompts rather than relying on a fixed sequence of taps or a third-party form link. A secondary guide from AARP points readers toward Instagram’s Help Center, but the platform’s own instructions should govern your report.

If the impersonation option is missing or the Help Center page presents questions that do not fit your circumstances, do not guess at an old menu sequence. Return to the official Help Center and use the current route and eligibility guidance it provides. Have the exact username or profile URL and links to relevant posts ready, but submit additional documents only if Instagram’s official process requests them. This guide cannot confirm which documents Instagram may currently request.

How do I report someone impersonating me on Instagram? Start with the impersonating profile’s report menu if it offers the relevant choice. If you need the dedicated route, use the official Help Center article for accounts impersonating you and follow its current instructions. The available published guidance does not establish a fixed form sequence, who besides the person impersonated may file, or a particular outcome.

How to report impersonation on Facebook

Open Facebook’s Help Center imposter-account reporting route and choose the option that describes the case, such as someone pretending to be you, a friend, or a business or organization. If the profile’s report menu offers the relevant impersonation option, you can start there as well. Choosing the closest accurate description matters because the route distinguishes among different kinds of reported people or entities.

Facebook says you can check reports in Support Inbox. For some reports where Facebook leaves the reported item up, another review may be available. The availability of that option depends on the specific report and decision; check the status and choices shown in Support Inbox. Avoid relying on an exact form URL or a promised outcome: use Facebook’s live official route and its current prompts.

If you report an account, retain its exact username or profile URL and links to posts that show the claimed identity. Facebook’s current document requirements and detailed form fields are not established here, so do not assume that Facebook requires the same identification as X or TikTok, or that it accepts a particular representative route. Check the official page for the option that matches whether you are the person impersonated, a friend reporting, or reporting a business or organization.

If Facebook leaves an item up, check Support Inbox rather than assuming that the report has been ignored or that a second review is always available. Facebook says another review may be offered for some reports; it is not described as a universal next step. Follow the decision-specific instructions shown there.

How to report impersonation on TikTok

Report from the profile

  1. In the TikTok app, open the impersonating profile and tap Share. In a browser, open More options.
  2. Choose Report, then Report account.
  3. Choose Pretending to Be Someone.
  4. Select Me if the account is impersonating you, or Celebrity if it is impersonating someone else, then submit the report. Follow the current on-screen prompts if the labels differ.

The profile flow’s choices distinguish a report about the person filing from a report about someone else. Select the choice that accurately describes who is being impersonated, then submit the report through the remaining prompts. If the menu wording has changed, use the current official labels rather than relying on an outdated walkthrough.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the online form for the account’s region

TikTok documents separate online-form instructions for U.S. and non-U.S. accounts. Choose the route that matches the account’s region and follow the form shown there. Do not swap steps between the two routes just because both concern impersonation.

  • U.S. accounts: choose “Report an Impersonation Account on TikTok” (or the appeal option), enter the requested contact and country details, identify who is being impersonated, provide identification when requested, and submit.
  • Accounts outside the U.S.: choose Report a potential violation, then Account violation, then Impersonation, and answer who is being impersonated.

Start at TikTok’s Help Center instructions and verify the route and prompts before submitting. For the U.S. form, be prepared to provide contact and country details and identification if requested. The non-U.S. route described here instead directs the reporter through the potential-violation, account-violation, and impersonation selections, then asks who is being impersonated. The currently displayed form remains the authority for what to enter.

TikTok’s Safety Center states that it will not disclose a reporter’s identity to the person whose content or account is reported. That is TikTok’s stated practice and should not be assumed to apply to other platforms. See TikTok’s reporting guidance. If confidentiality is important to your decision, read the current information on the official route; do not treat this statement about TikTok as a guarantee about Instagram, Facebook, or X.

How to report impersonation on X

If you are being impersonated

Use X’s personal impersonation form. It says to sign in to the account being impersonated before proceeding. The form requests government-ID verification, the reported account’s username, links to posts claiming to be you, an email address, and details about the case. Read the current consent terms carefully: the form includes a disclosure about identity data used for verification.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Gather those details before opening the form: the reported username, relevant post links, an email address, and the information needed to complete the identity check. The form’s request for government-ID verification is specific to the personal reporting route described here; do not assume the same process applies to a bystander. Review the consent language on the live form before sharing identity information, because it explains how verification data is used.

If you are filing for someone else

Use X’s separate authorized-representative form. It asks for documentation showing that you have authority to act for the person being impersonated. Being a friend or concerned bystander is not, by itself, the same thing as being an authorized representative. If you do not have authority documentation, consult X’s current reporting guidance for the route that applies to your role rather than submitting the personal form on someone else’s behalf.

If you are a bystander

Report directly from the impersonating account’s profile. X says a bystander does not need an X account to report impersonation. The profile-based bystander option differs from the personal form and the authorized-representative form, so do not use the personal route simply because you have links or evidence about the account.

X’s Help Center says, “X does not tolerate accounts or Communities that pose as another person, brand, or organization in a confusing or deceptive manner.” It says it investigates valid impersonation reports; if an account violates its policy, it may be suspended or required to update the account. Reporting is separate from verification. See X’s impersonation-report guidance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This means an impersonation report is not an application to verify your own account, and filing one does not itself establish that an account will be suspended. X describes possible actions if it finds a policy violation, including suspension or requiring an account update. The result depends on its review of the report.

What to expect after submitting a report

Save the confirmation or case details shown after you submit. For Facebook, check Support Inbox for the report status and any available option to request another review. X says it investigates valid reports and may suspend or require changes to an account found in violation.

For each platform, a report starts a review; it is not a promise of removal, a particular decision, or a response time. There is no common review deadline or takedown rate established here, and there is no basis to claim that every report receives the same follow-up. Follow any status or appeal instructions the platform provides for your specific report.

If a platform leaves the account or content up, use the status or review options that appear for that report. Facebook says a further review may be available for some cases through Support Inbox. Do not assume that option exists for every Facebook report or that another platform offers the same process. Likewise, X’s possible outcomes described in its guidance are suspension or required account changes when it finds a violation, not a guaranteed result.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Reporting without enough detail: include the exact username or profile URL and links to relevant posts where the form allows. For X’s personal form, the reported username and post links are specifically requested.
  • Using the wrong reporter route: distinguish between filing for yourself, acting with authorization, and reporting as a bystander. On X, these routes have different forms; TikTok’s profile flow also distinguishes “Me” from “Celebrity.”
  • Choosing the wrong TikTok region route: TikTok’s documented U.S. and non-U.S. online-form instructions differ. Follow the form for the relevant geography rather than combining the steps.
  • Submitting documents through an unofficial channel: provide ID or authority proof only through an official platform form when requested. X’s personal form requests government-ID verification, its representative form requests proof of authority, and TikTok’s U.S. form asks for identification when requested. Instagram and Facebook’s current requirements are not confirmed here.
  • Treating a copyright report as an impersonation report: report impersonation directly, and use a copyright route only for a genuine rights issue involving material to which you have rights.
  • Expecting a guaranteed result or deadline: platform review does not establish that an account will be removed or specify when a decision will arrive.
  • Assuming one platform’s privacy statement applies everywhere: TikTok states it will not disclose the reporter’s identity to the person whose account or content was reported. The published guidance does not establish the same practice for Instagram, Facebook, or X.
  • Trusting someone who promises removal: use official reporting routes and do not send ID to a person who says they can take an account down for you.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I report an account pretending to be me?

Start from the impersonating profile’s report menu if it offers an impersonation option. If you are the person being impersonated and need a dedicated route, use the platform’s official Help Center form and follow its current prompts. Save the exact username or profile URL and links to relevant posts before filing.

Can I report an account impersonating someone else?

Yes, but the right route depends on the platform and your role. TikTok’s profile flow distinguishes “Me” from “Celebrity.” Facebook’s route includes options for someone pretending to be a friend or a business/organization. X says bystanders can report impersonation from the profile without an X account. Instagram’s current eligibility and form instructions should be checked on its official Help Center page; do not assume a bystander can use the same form as the person impersonated.

Can I report impersonation on X without an account?

X says a bystander does not need an X account to report impersonation from the reported profile. The personal reporting form is different: it says to sign in to the account being impersonated. A representative has a separate form and is asked for authority documentation.

Does TikTok tell the person who reported them?

TikTok’s Safety Center says it will not disclose the reporter’s identity to the person whose content or account was reported. This is TikTok’s stated practice; do not assume it applies to Instagram, Facebook, or X.

  • Up to 4K HDR with Dolby Vision delivers captivating, true-to-life detail[4]; and you can connect speakers that support Dolby Atmos for more immersive 3D sound

Will reporting get the impersonation account removed?

Not necessarily. A report prompts review but does not guarantee removal, a particular decision, or a response time. X says it investigates valid reports and may suspend or require changes to an account that violates its policy. Facebook says another review may be available for some reports where it leaves the item up.

What evidence should I include?

Keep the exact username or profile URL and links to posts or messages that show the impersonation. X’s personal form specifically asks for the reported username and links to posts claiming to be you. Save screenshots for your own records if you can, and provide only the documents requested by the official form.

Do I need to upload identification?

It depends on the platform and route. X’s personal impersonation form requests government-ID verification; its representative form asks for documentation showing authority to act. TikTok’s U.S. online form asks for identification when requested. Current identity-document requirements for Instagram or Facebook are not confirmed here, so check their live official forms.

What if the account is impersonating my business or organization?

Use the platform’s option for a business or organization where one is offered, rather than assuming an individual-person form fits. Facebook’s imposter-account route includes a business/organization choice. X’s guidance covers accounts posing as a person, brand, or organization. For other platforms, check the official route and any applicable organization or trademark reporting options.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I file a copyright report if the account uses my photo?

A copyright report may address the separate issue of someone using your copyrighted photo or other work, but it does not replace an impersonation report. Report the identity misrepresentation through the impersonation route and use a copyright route only for a genuine rights issue.

The Bottom Line

Use the official reporting route that matches the platform and your role. Save the impersonating account’s username or profile URL and relevant post links, and submit identity or authority documents only when the official form asks for them. TikTok’s online instructions differ by region, X separates personal, representative, and bystander reports, and Instagram’s and Facebook’s current form details should be confirmed on their live Help Center pages. Filing starts a review; it does not guarantee removal or a deadline.
