How to Replace Videos in a Running YouTube Playlist Livestream from a Remote Server

Replace the video in the remote playout system sending your YouTube livestream—not in the YouTube Studio playlist. Hot-swap and restart behavior depend on the server software.

To replace a video in a YouTube livestream that is playing from a remote server, change the media or queue in the remote playout system sending the stream—not in YouTube Studio. Keep the encoder’s YouTube destination and stream key configured; they connect the outgoing stream to YouTube, but do not select which video plays. Whether you can swap a video without interrupting the stream depends on the specific server-side software.

Where do I change the video that’s playing in my YouTube livestream?

First identify which kind of playlist you mean. A YouTube playlist is a collection of YouTube videos managed in YouTube Studio. A remote playout queue is the media schedule or source list used by a server-side system to generate the live video. They are separate things: YouTube receives the stream from an encoder, while the remote system determines what that encoder sends. YouTube describes the encoder this way: “An encoder converts your video into a digital format to stream on YouTube.” (YouTube Help: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder; YouTube Help: Create and manage playlists.)

If a remote machine or cloud service is playing files into the encoder, use that system’s documented controls to replace the current item, change the next item, reload its playlist, or switch its source. YouTube Studio’s playlist controls do not replace media already being sent by an external encoder.

How to make the change without guessing

  1. Locate the playout system. Sign in to the remote server or hosted service that schedules and plays the videos. Find its media, schedule, queue, or source controls; the exact labels depend on the product.
  2. Check the system’s replacement behavior. Consult its documentation for whether it supports replacing the current item while output remains connected, changing only the next item, or reloading a playlist. Confirm whether the change takes effect immediately or at a transition.
  3. Make the change using the supported control. Replace or reorder the relevant item in the remote playout system. Do not assume that editing a YouTube Studio playlist updates the encoder’s media queue.
  4. Monitor the outgoing stream. Check the playout system and the public YouTube livestream after the change. Confirm that the intended video and audio are playing and that the stream remains live.
  5. Test before relying on a live swap. If the stream is important, verify the workflow on a non-critical stream first. Whether a restart is required, whether a transition is seamless, and whether a change interrupts output are provider-specific; YouTube’s general encoder guidance does not establish those behaviors.

The YouTube encoder’s server URL and stream key identify where the encoder sends the stream; they are not controls for choosing the next file. Leave them configured unless you are deliberately changing the stream destination or connection. Treat the stream key as private: it identifies the creator and stream in YouTube’s HLS guidance as well as being used for standard encoder setup (YouTube Live Streaming API: HLS ingestion).

What “playlist” means in an HLS workflow

In YouTube’s HLS ingestion protocol, a Media Playlist is a technical file listing media segments in stream order. It is not a user-facing YouTube playlist. Google’s guide says each Media Segment represents the stream’s actual multimedia content for a brief portion lasting between one and four seconds. In that workflow, the encoder sends media playlists and segments to YouTube, so changing the content involves the encoder or its upstream playout system—not editing a Studio collection.

YouTube’s HLS requirements are protocol-specific and intended for encoder vendors: muxed M2TS audio/video; H.264 or HEVC video; AAC audio; up to 60 fps; HTTPS; one encoded stream; and Media Playlists rather than Master Playlists. They are not a general set of instructions for changing a third-party playout queue. See the HLS ingestion guide before implementing or changing an HLS encoder workflow.

What to verify with your remote server provider

  • Does the product support hot replacement while its output to YouTube stays connected?
  • Does a change apply immediately, at the next item, or only after a reload or restart?
  • What happens to audio and video during the transition?
  • Can you monitor the playout remotely and verify what is actually being sent?
  • Can you test the change without disrupting the public stream?

YouTube supports software or hardware encoders; a physical hardware encoder is not universally required for a playlist livestream. For one vendor-specific example, Livestream Studio documents RTMP setup using YouTube’s Stream URL and Stream Key and notes that its method changed as of October 2024. That example does not establish the controls or behavior of other remote playout products (Livestream Studio: How to Stream to YouTube Live).
