Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteFor an episode already published on YouTube, trim the beginning and end in YouTube Studio’s Editor. It keeps the existing video URL, views, and comments, and you do not need to upload the episode again. For a local audio master, use Audacity’s Trim Audio to remove only the unwanted opening and ending; use its Truncate Silence effect only when you also want to shorten quiet gaps inside the episode.
Choose the right method
| Where the episode is | What you want to remove | Recommended method |
|---|---|---|
| Already published on YouTube | Silence at the beginning, end, or both | YouTube Studio Editor, to keep the existing upload and URL |
| Local audio master | Only the beginning and ending | Audacity’s selection-based Trim Audio |
| Local audio or video project | Low-volume gaps throughout | Audacity’s Truncate Silence, with careful review |
| Audio or video project edited around a transcript | Detected silent gaps throughout | Descript’s Remove Silence, an optional alternative |
Endpoint trimming and silence removal throughout an episode are different edits. Trimming removes material outside the selected start and end points. Silence-removal effects detect low-level passages across the timeline and may also shorten pauses you meant to keep.
Trim an episode that is already on YouTube
- On a computer, sign in to YouTube Studio and open Content.
- Click the episode’s title or thumbnail, then select Editor.
- Select Trim & cut. In the endpoint trim tool, drag the sides of the blue selection box until it covers the episode content you want to keep. Anything outside the box is removed.
- Preview the opening and ending. Check that the first spoken word, music cue, or intended pause is intact and that the final sentence or credits are not cut off.
- Save only after you are satisfied with the preview, then inspect the published result.
YouTube says you can trim videos shorter than six hours without re-uploading; the URL, views, and comments remain. A save restriction may apply to unedited videos with more than 100,000 views that are outside the YouTube Partner Program. YouTube also says the former “Revert to original” option is unavailable for saved Studio Editor changes since June 2025. Back up your source before editing, and check the current eligibility and save behavior in YouTube’s trim instructions.
Trim the start and end of a local audio master in Audacity
- Open the audio file in Audacity. Save a project copy before editing the master.
- Select the audio you want to keep: begin just after the unwanted opening and end just before the unwanted tail. Zoom in for precise boundaries, or enter exact selection times if you know them.
- Choose Edit → Remove Special → Trim Audio. The shortcut is Ctrl+T on Windows or Linux and Cmd+T on macOS.
- Listen to the new beginning and ending. In the Audacity project, you can drag the edges back out if you need to recover trimmed material before final export.
- Choose File → Export Audio and export in a suitable format, such as MP3 or WAV. The exported file contains the remaining visible audio.
Audacity’s trim feature retains the selected region and hides what lies outside it in the project. See its Trim Audio instructions for the selection and export workflow.

Shorten quiet gaps throughout an episode
Use this only if you want to change pauses inside the show as well as the endpoints. In Audacity, choose Effect → Special → Truncate Silence. The effect identifies audio below a chosen decibel threshold for at least a chosen minimum duration, then either shortens detected gaps to a fixed duration or compresses them proportionally.
- Start conservatively. A threshold and minimum duration that are too aggressive can catch quiet speech, breaths, or deliberate dramatic pauses.
- Preview and listen through the edited episode, especially around cuts. Adjust the settings if words sound clipped or the pacing becomes unnatural.
- With multiple tracks, keep synchronization in mind. Audacity’s default behavior processes silence when it occurs across all selected tracks at the same time; independent-track processing can desynchronize them.
For the available detection and processing behavior, consult the Audacity Development Manual’s Truncate Silence guide.

Optional alternative: Descript
Descript’s July 29, 2026 release notes say version 3.7 added a Remove Silence function with an adjustable threshold for detecting and shortening or removing silent gaps in one pass. Its instructions recommend reviewing detected edits and previewing the result; cuts can be restored in the project. It is an optional route for transcript-oriented audio or video editing, not a requirement for trimming a YouTube upload. See Descript’s version 3.7 release notes and its Silence Remover instructions.
Know what happens to the YouTube upload
Studio trimming changes the existing upload. YouTube does not let you replace an uploaded video file in place: if you render a separately edited version and upload it, that upload gets a new URL. If retaining the current URL matters, use the Studio Editor trim tool when it meets your needs. Read YouTube’s guidance on replacing or deleting a video before deciding to upload a replacement.

A YouTube podcast episode is a video in a podcast playlist; YouTube’s podcast creation workflow does not turn an MP3 file directly into a podcast episode. If you are preparing a local audio master for a YouTube podcast, it still needs to be part of a video upload. See YouTube’s podcast setup instructions.
Common problems and fixes
- The Studio trim option is unavailable or cannot be saved: check the video length and eligibility conditions, including the over-100,000-view restriction for unedited videos outside the YouTube Partner Program. Review YouTube’s current trim requirements.
- The beginning or ending sounds abruptly cut: return to the preview and move the trim boundary slightly to preserve the first intended sound or final word. For a local master, adjust the selection and listen again before exporting.
- Words or pauses disappear inside the episode: Truncate Silence is threshold-based, so lower-volume speech or intentional pauses may be detected. Use less aggressive settings, restore the affected material, and review the edited track.
- Separate tracks no longer line up: avoid independent-track silence processing when synchronization matters; Audacity’s default simultaneous processing is designed to preserve the timing relationship across selected tracks.
- You need a new render but want the old URL: YouTube does not replace the media in place. A new upload receives a new URL, so use Studio trimming if preserving the existing upload is essential.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the edited episode is part of a pre-recorded YouTube stream, StreamNeo can loop uploaded videos from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; StreamNeo streams your upload at its original quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream, and gives the first day free with no card.
