Reduce the cost of a 24/7 audio stream by checking both sides of its traffic: the continuous feed from your encoder to the media server, and the much larger potential delivery from that server to listeners. Then test a lower bitrate or mono output, avoid unnecessary transcoding, and compare the resulting traffic and CPU use with the exact VPS plan’s transfer rules. There is no universal cheapest server tier: the answer depends on listener-hours, codec compatibility, and provider billing.
Where a 24/7 audio stream uses bandwidth
In a typical internet-radio setup, a source or generator sends one feed to a media server, which distributes the stream to listeners. Liquidsoap’s overview describes this two-part arrangement: the source feed keeps running even when no one is listening, while server-to-listener delivery grows with the audience. Liquidsoap’s internet-radio toolchain overview explains the architecture.
- Source to server: one continuous feed from your encoder or generator. Its traffic does not fall to zero when the audience is away.
- Server to listeners: outbound traffic multiplied by how many people listen and for how long. This is often the cost lever that matters most as audience listening time grows.
Do not estimate the monthly bill from the VPS’s advertised base price alone. Check its included transfer, overage rates, and whether a separate media-server or delivery service is involved.
Estimate listener delivery before changing providers
Start with the actual encoded bitrate and expected listener-hours. For a rough estimate, each listener receives the stream rate continuously while connected; multiply that rate by aggregate listening time, then allow for protocol and container overhead. The source-to-server feed is a separate, continuous leg. Treat any estimate as a planning figure, not an exact invoice prediction, because overhead and provider metering differ.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Record the current output bitrate, channel count, codec, and container or delivery protocol.
- Estimate aggregate monthly listening time from expected concurrent listeners and hours listened. Use your own audience assumptions rather than a generic listener count.
- Estimate listener egress from the encoded rate and those listener-hours, adding an allowance for delivery overhead.
- Compare the estimate with the candidate VPS’s included transfer and overage terms, plus any separate streaming or CDN charges.
- Repeat the comparison for lower-bitrate and mono tests, using the same listener assumptions.
This method distinguishes a cheap VPS with little included transfer from a plan whose total cost remains lower after delivery is counted.
Choose a codec listeners can actually play
MP3 is the compatibility-oriented starting point. Liquidsoap’s encoding documentation says MP3 has the widest compatibility, while Opus and Vorbis are supported by modern browsers and can provide good quality at lower bitrates. That does not establish compatibility with every app, smart speaker, or embedded player. Check the actual clients your listeners use before switching formats. See Liquidsoap’s encoding-format documentation.
- Keep MP3 if broad, predictable compatibility is more important than reducing bitrate.
- Test Opus or Vorbis only after confirming that the browsers and player apps used by your audience support the chosen stream format.
- Evaluate the entire delivery path, including the player and container, rather than assuming codec support alone guarantees playback.
Test bitrate and mono without harming the listening experience
Bitrate and channel count are direct encoding controls. Lowering either can reduce the traffic sent to listeners, but it can change the sound. For relaxation content, stereo may carry meaningful spatial ambience; compare the actual stream rather than treating mono as an automatic improvement.

Liquidsoap’s cookbook documents both a 32 kbps mono MP3 configuration and a 128 kbps MP3 output. These are examples to test, not universal quality recommendations. Listen for artifacts in the music, nature recordings, or ambient textures used by your channel, and test playback on the devices your audience relies on. The cookbook also cautions that encoding and decoding can be CPU-intensive. Liquidsoap’s transcoding cookbook provides the configuration examples.
- Keep a sample of the current output as your baseline.
- Make one change at a time: first try a lower bitrate, then separately test mono if the content permits it.
- Listen to the same representative passages on headphones and typical listener devices; check quiet passages and sustained tones as well as music transitions.
- Confirm that the stream plays correctly in each supported player and that the change produces a meaningful reduction in calculated egress.
- Retain the lower-cost setting only if playback quality and compatibility remain acceptable.
Avoid paying CPU for needless transcoding
Encoding and decoding can be heavy on CPU. If your source is already in the intended delivery format, avoid decoding and re-encoding it by habit. If you must transcode, measure the real pipeline under steady playback and during playlist transitions, including any mixing or resampling it performs.
Do not select a smaller VPS based on a bitrate estimate alone. The available evidence does not establish a universal CPU requirement or VPS size; the right tier depends on the actual workload. Confirm stable operation on the candidate plan before relying on it for a continuous stream.

Compare the full monthly cost, not just the VPS fee
For each candidate setup, total the VPS base fee, included egress, transfer overage, any separate streaming or CDN charges, and the operational requirements for keeping the service running. Provider terms change, so verify current official plan details before purchase.
Billing models can differ substantially. Cloudflare says bandwidth is included in its plans and describes separate metering for Argo data transfer in its billing documentation. Its Bandwidth Alliance describes transfer discounts or waivers that depend on partner-specific terms. These are examples of why you must check the particular service and conditions rather than assume every provider bills bandwidth alike.

Keep a continuous stream reliable while trimming cost
A cost change is useful only if the stream remains available. Before moving to a smaller plan or changing the pipeline, check that the source generator, media server, and any restart or recovery process continue to work through normal playback and playlist transitions. Compare the reliability requirements of your current setup with the candidate provider’s documented service terms; a particular uptime target or recovery guarantee cannot be inferred without those details.
- Verify that the source feed remains connected and the media server continues serving a test listener.
- Watch CPU and memory under the actual encoding workload, not just while idle.
- Check player compatibility and audio quality after each codec, bitrate, or channel change.
- Include any separately billed delivery service in the cost calculation.
Troubleshoot common cost-cutting problems
The bill remains high after lowering bitrate
Check whether listener-hours, rather than the source feed, dominate egress. Recalculate using the actual audience listening time, and inspect the VPS’s included transfer and overage terms. A lower bitrate reduces traffic per listener but cannot remove the audience multiplier.
Some listeners cannot play the new stream
The selected codec or delivery format may not be supported by their browser, app, or device. Restore the compatibility-oriented MP3 output or test the unsupported clients before making a format change permanent.

The lower bitrate sounds poor
Raise the bitrate and compare again. If stereo ambience is important, preserve stereo rather than forcing mono for a traffic reduction that compromises the listening experience. The documented 32 kbps mono example is only a test point.
CPU usage rises or playback becomes unstable
Look for decoding and re-encoding that could be avoided, then measure the real pipeline during normal playback and transitions. Do not assume a particular VPS size will work without testing the workload on that plan.
A proposed delivery service looks cheaper but may not fit audio
Confirm that the service explicitly supports your audio streaming use case and compare its applicable charges. Video delivery pricing, by itself, does not establish support for an audio-only radio stream.
Or let it run in the cloud
For a YouTube relaxation channel that plays uploaded videos as a continuous live stream, StreamNeo is a different option from running an audio-radio server on a VPS. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; the cloud loops the uploaded video, so nothing has to stay on at home. It does not go live from a camera or stream to platforms other than YouTube.
