How to Reduce MP4 Size—and Data Use—for a 24/7 YouTube Channel in India

For a 24/7 YouTube stream, outgoing bitrate—not the size of the source MP4—drives ongoing upload data. Estimate usage, tune live settings, and re-encode only when the file itself needs to shrink.

Compressing an MP4 does not, by itself, reduce the data used by a 24/7 YouTube live stream. The stream’s outgoing bitrate determines how much data your connection uploads while it is live. To cut that usage, lower the live encoder’s total bitrate and, if necessary, its resolution or frame rate; re-encode the MP4 only when you need a smaller file for storage or transfer.

First, identify which data you want to reduce

There are two separate things to manage: the size of a video file on disk and the data continuously sent to YouTube during a live broadcast. An MP4 is a container for video and audio streams. Re-encoding those streams can make the file smaller, usually by trading away some quality. But if your live encoder is configured to send at a fixed bitrate, it continues sending at that rate while the video plays—even if the source MP4 is smaller.

  • To use less mobile or broadband data while live: reduce the encoder’s total outgoing bitrate, and test lower resolution or frame rate if needed.
  • To save storage or transfer time: re-encode the MP4, checking the result for quality loss.

For a channel looping prerecorded files, the encoder still sends its configured live stream continuously. Making the source file smaller does not stop that ongoing upload.

Estimate the data a bitrate will use

A steady upload of 1 Mbps uses approximately 10.8 GB per day, or 324 GB in 30 days. These are decimal-unit arithmetic estimates based on continuous runtime, not figures published by a provider.

Total outgoing bitrate Approximate data per day Approximate data over 30 days
0.5 Mbps 5.4 GB 162 GB
1 Mbps 10.8 GB 324 GB
3 Mbps 32.4 GB 972 GB

The estimate assumes a constant bitrate and 24-hour operation. Actual data use can be higher because of protocol overhead, reconnects, other household or app traffic, and the way your provider counts data. Include audio in the bitrate if using a total stream bitrate; if you calculate from video bitrate alone, add audio and allow for overhead. Compare the estimate with your plan’s usable monthly allowance and check its fair-use and post-cap throttling terms. No particular Indian provider or plan is established here, so check the terms for your own location and connection.

Choose a live bitrate and picture setting

YouTube’s live encoder guidance, accessed October 3, 2026, lists different bitrate ranges by codec, resolution, and frame rate. The figures below are platform recommendations, not guarantees of acceptable picture quality or a stable connection.

Live video setting H.264 guidance AV1 or H.265 guidance
720p at 30 fps 3–8 Mbps 2–6 Mbps
480p at 30 fps 0.4–4 Mbps 0.3–3 Mbps

These are video bitrate ranges. YouTube’s live settings table also lists 128 Kbps for stereo audio as a recommended setting, not a requirement for every stream. Consult YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for the applicable codec and format details.

Start with the least demanding setting that preserves the content

For a documentary channel, check the scenes that matter: small on-screen text, subtitles, fine detail, camera movement, and audio clarity. A mostly static image may tolerate a lower setting than fast-moving footage, but the result depends on the source and the encoder. Begin with a lower resolution or bitrate only if it still makes the content legible and watchable; test a representative segment before relying on it around the clock.

Keep the stream within sustained upload capacity

YouTube’s guidance says, “The total bitrate that you’re streaming cannot exceed the amount of upload bandwidth available.” Your connection needs to sustain the combined audio and video bitrate, with room for normal variation. YouTube does not specify one universal headroom percentage. A short speed-test peak alone does not show that a connection can hold the setting continuously. Check your connection under realistic conditions and monitor YouTube Live Control Room’s stream health during a test. See YouTube’s streaming tips.

Use compatible live encoder settings

YouTube’s live guidance covers H.264, H.265, and AV1 video; RTMP or RTMPS ingest; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate (CBR); and a recommended two-second keyframe interval, which should not exceed four seconds. Choose settings appropriate to the ingest option and encoder you use, then verify them against YouTube’s current guidance at YouTube’s live encoder settings page.

Re-encode an MP4 when the file itself needs to be smaller

Re-encoding can reduce file size by lowering the video or audio bitrate, resolution, or frame rate. The amount saved depends on the source and the chosen settings; there is no CRF value or other setting that guarantees a particular size. FFmpeg’s libx264 options include CRF, which targets quality, and a preset, which trades encoding speed against compression efficiency. See the FFmpeg codecs documentation.

  1. Keep the original file. Re-encoding is lossy, and repeated lossy encodes can discard more information each time.
  2. Make a short representative sample. Include motion, graphics or subtitles, and typical audio—not just an easy-to-compress still frame.
  3. Re-encode the sample with your chosen tool and settings. Check both its file size and how the picture and sound hold up before processing the full video.
  4. Test the live output separately. Confirm the encoder’s outgoing bitrate and YouTube’s stream health; a smaller source file does not set the live bitrate for you.

YouTube’s upload recommendations are separate from live ingest guidance. For uploaded files, YouTube recommends the MP4 container and H.264 video, with listed audio options including AAC-LC, Opus, or Eclipsa Audio at a 48 kHz sample rate. Its upload page also recommends placing the MP4 moov atom at the front (“Fast Start”), which can help progressive playback but does not reduce the live encoder’s data rate. Check YouTube’s recommended upload encoding settings for upload-specific advice.

Test the full setup before committing to a data plan

  1. Set the intended encoder, resolution, frame rate, codec, audio, and total bitrate.
  2. Run a representative test that includes the channel’s usual motion, sound, and graphics.
  3. Check playback from a separate viewer connection for detail, text legibility, audio, and interruptions.
  4. Review YouTube Live Control Room’s stream health and confirm the connection can sustain the configured total bitrate.
  5. Estimate monthly upload using the total outgoing bitrate, then compare it with the plan’s usable data allowance and terms.

Repeat the test after changing a setting or connection. Lowering bitrate can reduce upload volume, but it can also make compression artifacts more visible; reducing resolution or frame rate can affect clarity or motion. The right compromise depends on your footage and your actual sustained connection.

Common problems and what to check

  • The MP4 is smaller, but monthly data use is unchanged: check the live encoder’s outgoing bitrate. Source-file size and live-stream bitrate are separate.
  • The stream buffers or loses health: check sustained upload capacity against the combined stream bitrate, along with other traffic using the connection. Do not rely only on a short speed-test result.
  • The picture looks blocky after lowering bitrate: test a representative scene and consider whether a higher bitrate or lower resolution/frame rate gives a better balance. YouTube’s ranges are guidance, not a guarantee for every scene.
  • Text or subtitles are hard to read: inspect them at the intended viewing size during a test before choosing a lower resolution.
  • The upload file plays slowly at first: YouTube’s upload guidance recommends Fast Start placement for the MP4 moov atom; this is an upload/playback consideration, not a live data-saving setting.
