To see fewer posts about Elon Musk and Tesla, adjust recommendations in the app where they appear: use X’s Following timeline and muting controls, mute unwanted Reddit communities, and tune TikTok’s For You preferences. These controls work differently and do not promise to remove every mention, repost, news story, advertisement, or cross-post.
If you still want access to particular accounts or communities, start with the narrowest control that addresses the source of the posts. A topic preference can change recommendations without muting a creator; a mute can suppress a specific account, phrase, or community, depending on the platform. You may need to make separate adjustments in each app.
Choose a control based on where the posts come from
First identify the part of the feed where the content is appearing and whether it comes from a particular account, phrase, creator, sound, or community. The available controls are not interchangeable: X documents account and phrase muting as well as recommendation feedback; Reddit’s relevant controls target communities; TikTok separates For You topic preferences from controls for creators and sounds.
- Posts from accounts you do not follow on X: switch to Following to see posts from followed accounts rather than recommendations from accounts outside that list.
- A particular phrase or account on X: use word or phrase muting, or mute the account. “Show less often” is feedback about a post, not the same thing as a direct mute.
- Reddit recommendations from particular communities: mute the communities or choose “Show fewer posts like this.” These are community-level options, not a general keyword filter.
- TikTok recommendations on For You: adjust topic preferences. For a specific creator or sound, use the separate hide controls described in TikTok’s content-controls guidance.
None of these options is documented as a universal switch for every surface in an app, much less for every social network. Make a change where you see the posts, then check the feed again to decide whether a different or additional control is needed.

Start by deciding what you want to keep
Reducing unwanted content does not have to mean shutting off every possible route to a subject. You might want fewer recommendations while keeping accounts you chose to follow, or you may want to avoid one repetitive source without hiding all discussion of Tesla or Musk. Before changing a setting, ask whether the problem is the subject itself, a particular source, or the way a recommendation reached your feed.
That distinction helps prevent over-filtering. If one account repeatedly posts material you do not want, an account mute is more targeted than muting broad words that might appear in useful news or discussion. If the unwanted items are recommendations from unfamiliar accounts, changing which X timeline you view is a different response from silencing a followed account. On Reddit, the documented mute operates at community level; it is not a way to keep a community while excluding only a word from it. TikTok’s For You topic preferences likewise have a different target from hiding a creator or sound.
There is no need to begin with every available control. Pick the one that best matches the post you saw, then return to the relevant feed. If other unwanted posts remain, check whether they came from a different account, term, community, creator, sound, or feed surface before adding another control.
Reduce recommendations on X
Use Following when you want posts from accounts you follow
X distinguishes its For You and Following timelines. For You includes recommendations from accounts you do not explicitly follow; Following shows posts from accounts you follow. If your main problem is unsolicited recommendations, select Following rather than relying only on post-by-post feedback.

Posts about those subjects can still appear if an account you follow posts them. If that happens, use a more specific control rather than assuming the timeline has filtered out a topic.
Think of Following as a way to narrow the source pool to accounts you already chose to follow, not as a topic filter. If a followed account posts about Tesla, that post may still be relevant to your chosen timeline. Conversely, a recommendation about the same subject from an account you do not follow is the kind of item the Following timeline is intended to separate from the For You recommendations described by X.
Mute words and phrases in the Home timeline
X says word muting applies to notifications and the Home timeline. If you want fewer posts containing particular terms, choose a short set that reflects what you actually see. Possible examples include “Elon Musk,” “Tesla,” “$TSLA,” or relevant usernames and hashtags. These are starting points, not a complete or guaranteed filter: a post can discuss the same subject without using any chosen term.

Use the app’s current mute-word controls to add terms. Menu labels and navigation can change, so follow the wording displayed in your current version rather than relying on an old screenshot or an unverified tap-by-tap path. Consider whether a term would also hide posts you want—for example, a broad hashtag may be used in news or discussion unrelated to the particular posts you are trying to reduce.
A useful way to refine a word list is to look at the actual unwanted posts rather than trying to anticipate every possible way a subject could be mentioned. If a recurring post uses a particular username or hashtag, that may be a more focused candidate than a broad term. If the next unwanted post uses different wording, you can decide whether to add another term or whether the source account is the better target. No sample list, including the examples above, is guaranteed to catch every variation.
Remember the stated scope: X describes word muting for notifications and the Home timeline. Do not assume that adding a word will filter every part of X or material on other services. If the posts you are trying to change appear in a different surface, first check whether the current control is documented for that surface.
Mute an account or give a post-level signal
If a particular account is the repeated source, X documents account muting as an option. If a post is unwanted but you do not want to mute its author or a broader term, choose “Show less often” on that post. X Help Center describes this as a way to help X understand the types of posts you want to see less of in your timeline. That is feedback, not a promise that every similar post will disappear.
Use the distinction to avoid over-filtering: a direct account mute targets the account; a word mute targets matching terms in its documented surfaces; “Show less often” tells X you want less of a type of post. You can combine these approaches if the unwanted content has more than one source.

Use it when you want to signal a preference about a post without treating it as equivalent to muting an account or specific terms.
Reduce community recommendations on Reddit
Mute communities that are driving the posts
When Reddit posts are coming from identifiable communities, community muting is the most direct documented control. Reddit says muting a community covers notifications, Home—including recommendations—and Popular. That broader coverage may be useful if the same community is surfacing in more than one of those places.

Reddit documents a limit of 1,000 muted communities. This is a limit on community mutes, not a limit on keyword filters: the documented control targets communities, and the source does not establish it as a general way to remove every post containing “Tesla” or “Elon Musk.” If the content appears across multiple communities, you would need to identify and address the relevant communities individually.
Because a community mute applies to the community rather than just a particular topic, consider what else you would stop seeing from that community before choosing it. If it is a source you otherwise want to keep, the community-level control may be broader than your actual goal. Reddit’s separate “Show fewer posts like this” option can be a more appropriate response when the issue is a particular recommendation and you do not want to mute the entire community.
Use “Show fewer posts like this” for a recommendation
For a particular recommendation, Reddit also offers “Show fewer posts like this.” This is a post-level recommendation signal, whereas muting a community is a direct choice about that community. If a post is from a community you do not want recommended, community muting targets the source; if you want to respond to an individual recommendation without muting the entire community, use the fewer-posts option.
Reddit’s controls do not establish a universal subject filter across all communities. A post about Musk or Tesla can come from a community you still want to follow, so decide whether the source is the community itself or the particular recommendation before muting it.
The 1,000-community figure should not be mistaken for a recommendation about how many communities to mute. It is the documented cap. For this task, the practical question is which specific communities are actually producing unwanted items, and whether muting them fits your aim. It does not make the control a substitute for a keyword filter or establish that every post about the topic will be affected.
Adjust topic recommendations on TikTok
Change For You topic preferences
TikTok’s topic preferences are for the For You feed. TikTok Support says they do not affect Following, profile, or inbox. Use this option when the unwanted material is appearing as For You recommendations and you want to adjust the topics represented there.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsDo not expect a For You preference to change every part of TikTok. If the same content appears in Following, on a profile, or in the inbox, the topic setting is not documented as applying to those areas. Treat the feed surface as part of the setting’s scope, not as a small-print exception.

- Compact without compromises: Our sleek design won’t block neighboring HDMI ports, so you can switch from streaming to gaming with ease. Plus, it’s designed to stay hidden behind your TV, keeping wires neatly out of sight
This makes the topic preference a better fit for a broad change to recommendations on For You than for a single creator-specific problem. If the subject appears in another part of the app, changing a For You preference is not documented as the solution. Identify the surface first so you can judge the result in the same place where the post appeared.
Hide a creator or sound separately
TikTok’s content-controls guidance also describes hiding videos from a particular creator or videos made with a particular sound. These are narrower controls than changing topic preferences: choose them when a creator or sound is the identifiable source, rather than using a topic adjustment to solve a specific-account problem.
The available TikTok guidance has older publication or crawl signals than the X and Reddit material, and interface labels can change. Check the current app’s controls before following menu directions from an older guide. The documented distinction remains important: topic preferences concern For You, while creator and sound hiding are separate controls.
For example, if the issue is a recurring video from one creator, a creator-specific hide is more closely matched to that source than changing a broad topic preference. If the source is a sound used in multiple videos, the sound control is the relevant separate option. These choices are not the same as a general promise to remove every video about the subject or every mention of Musk or Tesla.
Compare the controls by target and coverage
| Platform and control | What it targets | Documented coverage | How direct it is |
|---|---|---|---|
| X Following timeline | Posts from accounts you follow rather than recommendations from accounts you do not follow | Following timeline | Changes the timeline you view; does not mute a subject |
| X word or phrase mute | Chosen words and phrases | Notifications and Home timeline | Direct mute for matching terms within those surfaces |
| X account mute | A chosen account | Account muting is documented; the reviewed guidance does not establish a complete list of affected surfaces | Direct account mute |
| X “Show less often” | A post or type of post | Timeline recommendations | Feedback signal, not a guaranteed removal |
| Reddit community mute | A chosen community | Notifications, Home recommendations, and Popular | Direct community-level mute |
| Reddit “Show fewer posts like this” | A recommendation | Recommendation control; the reviewed guidance does not establish broader surface coverage | Feedback signal for fewer similar posts |
| TikTok topic preferences | Topics represented in recommendations | For You; not Following, profile, or inbox | Adjusts For You topic preferences |
| TikTok creator or sound hiding | A creator or a sound | Videos from that creator or made with that sound | Directly targets the specified creator or sound |
The table reflects the scope established by official platform guidance; it is not a guarantee that every version of each app uses identical labels or exposes every control in the same place. The sources reviewed establish these controls for X, Reddit, and TikTok, not for every social network. If the posts are appearing in another service, look for that service’s own controls rather than assuming one app’s setting carries over.
There are three useful comparison questions. What is the target? It may be an account, term, topic, community, creator, sound, or an individual recommendation. Where does the setting apply? The documented scope ranges from specific feeds to multiple surfaces such as Reddit Home, Popular, and notifications. How direct is it? A mute is a direct choice about an account, term, or community, while “Show less often” and “Show fewer posts like this” are feedback about recommendations.
Reversibility and exact menu names are also worth checking before making a change. The reviewed guidance does not establish the current undo steps for every control, and app interfaces can change. If preserving the option to restore a setting matters to you, check the current app’s own settings and help before applying it. Do not assume that a control is permanent or reversible based solely on how another platform handles its comparable setting.

A practical sequence for tuning your feeds
- Identify the surface. Note whether the post is on X For You or Following, Reddit Home or Popular, or TikTok For You or another area. This matters because the controls have different coverage.
- Identify the source. Decide whether the unwanted material is tied to an account, a repeated word or phrase, a Reddit community, a TikTok creator or sound, or a broader recommendation topic.
- Choose the narrowest matching control. For example, mute a Reddit community if that community is the source; do not expect a community mute to act as a keyword filter. On X, use a term mute for chosen terms, and use “Show less often” when you want to give feedback about an individual recommendation.
- Apply the control in the relevant app. Use the app’s current labels and settings. Do not infer that a control applies to a different feed or service unless the platform says it does.
- Revisit the feed and refine. Notice what remains and whether it comes from another account, phrase, community, creator, sound, or surface. Add or change controls only as needed; no documented setting guarantees complete removal of every mention.
When you check again, compare like with like: a change to X’s Following timeline should be judged in that timeline, and TikTok’s topic preferences should be evaluated in For You rather than in Following, profile, or inbox. If the content is still present elsewhere, that may reflect a different surface outside the setting’s documented scope rather than a reason to assume the control failed.
Keep the process modest. You do not need a long list of guessed keywords or to mute every community that has ever mentioned Tesla. Start with the clearest source and the narrowest matching control, observe what remains, and make another adjustment only if it addresses a specific source you have identified. This keeps the settings aligned with what you want to see as well as what you want to avoid.
What these controls will not do
- They do not create one cross-platform filter. Each setting is tied to its own app, and you may need to repeat the process in every service where the content appears.
- They do not establish complete coverage of all mentions. The official guidance reviewed does not promise removal of every news story, repost, advertisement, or cross-post.
- They do not all filter by subject. Reddit’s documented mute targets communities; TikTok separates topic preferences from creator and sound controls; X offers several distinct kinds of controls with different scopes.
- They do not provide a measured reduction rate. The platform guidance does not establish a percentage decrease in Musk- or Tesla-related posts, and there is no basis here for claiming a particular amount of improvement.
These controls are useful for shaping what you encounter, but they are not evidence that a platform has eliminated a subject from your account or from the wider service. The practical way to judge whether they help is to check the specific feed where the unwanted posts appeared and make a targeted adjustment if needed.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I block every Elon Musk or Tesla mention with one setting?
The documented controls do not provide a universal cross-platform switch, and none promises to remove every mention, repost, news story, advertisement, or cross-post. Apply controls in each app where the posts appear and check the relevant feed afterward.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →What is the difference between X’s Following timeline and muting words?
X says Following shows posts from accounts you follow, while For You includes recommendations from accounts you do not explicitly follow. Word muting is a separate control that X says applies to notifications and the Home timeline; it targets chosen terms rather than changing the timeline’s source pool.
Will muting “Tesla” on X catch every post about Tesla?
No. A term mute applies to chosen words or phrases in the documented surfaces, and posts can discuss the subject without using the terms you selected. Examples such as “Tesla,” “$TSLA,” usernames, and hashtags are starting points, not a complete or guaranteed filter.
Does Reddit let me mute a keyword across all communities?
The Reddit controls covered here target communities, not arbitrary keywords. Muting a community applies to notifications, Home recommendations, and Popular; Reddit also documents a limit of 1,000 muted communities.
Will TikTok topic preferences change my Following feed or inbox?
TikTok Support says topic preferences affect For You, not Following, profile, or inbox. TikTok’s creator and sound hiding controls are separate options for videos from a particular creator or made with a particular sound.

Should I use a mute or a “show less” option?
Use a mute when you have identified a specific account, term, or community that you want to target. “Show less often” on X and “Show fewer posts like this” on Reddit are recommendation feedback options, not equivalent to direct mutes or guarantees that similar posts will disappear.
The Bottom Line
Use the control that matches the source and feed surface: X offers Following, account and word muting, and “Show less often”; Reddit targets communities and individual recommendations; TikTok separates For You topic preferences from creator and sound hiding. Check the current app settings, revisit the same feed, and adjust only as needed—none of these controls guarantees complete removal or works across platforms.
