You can recreate the look of Winifred Sanderson’s spell book, but the available licensed book is a separate tie-in—not a replica of the film prop. The Walt Disney Archives documents three prop versions and their visible design details, which make a useful reference for planning a display build. It does not provide a measured template, exact construction materials, or step-by-step instructions.
First, distinguish the film prop from the published book
The Hocus Pocus Spell Book by Eric Geron is a companion book, not the screen prop. Disney Books lists a 240-page print edition released August 30, 2022, for ages 8–12, ISBN 9781368076692 (Disney Books). Penguin Random House independently lists the hardcover with the same date, page count, and ISBN, and gives its dimensions as 7.5 by 9.5 inches. Its description mentions spells, potions, witch history, illustrations, and comments from Winnie, Mary, and Sarah (Penguin Random House).
That published book may work as a reading or inspiration item, but its catalog descriptions do not establish that it reproduces the film prop’s cover or is sold as a craft kit. Disney Store’s Hocus Pocus merchandise page likewise does not establish current availability of a screen-accurate replica or kit (Disney Store).
Use the documented prop details as your visual checklist
A 2018 account by Kelsey Williams for the Walt Disney Archives describes three versions of the spell book: two practical books, one with the eye open and one with it closed, plus a version with a remotely manipulated movable eye (D23 / Walt Disney Archives). The same account describes the cover details that make the prop recognizable:

These are documented visual features, not a complete construction specification. The Archives account does not give dimensions, a measured pattern, or exact real-world materials.
Choose the build you actually want
| Build choice | What it involves | What the Archives establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Static closed eye | A display-focused cover with a fixed, closed eye. | One practical prop version had the eye closed. |
| Static open eye | A display-focused cover with a fixed, open eye. | One practical prop version had the eye open. |
| Moving eye | A prop with a mechanism for moving the eye; expect additional design and construction work compared with a fixed detail. | A third version had a remotely manipulated movable eye. The account does not explain its mechanism. |
For a first build or a shelf display, a fixed eye keeps the scope focused on the book’s silhouette and raised cover details. Choose a moving eye only if you want to take on a mechanism as well as the cover. That is a practical build recommendation, not a claim about how the original prop was made.

Plan the cover and interior separately
Make the cover read clearly
Start by deciding how you will create the raised fingers, six serpents, claw closure, and stitching. Possible supply categories include a book board or suitable book base, a cover material, sculpting or molding materials for raised details, decorative serpent forms, claw-style closure hardware, adhesives, and hand tools. These are inferred options based on the documented appearance; Disney does not specify the prop’s material recipe. Select materials for your own desired finish and handling, rather than treating any one method as historically verified.
Decide how much interior content to make
The Archives says the practical books contained spell content, including a section called “Manual of Witchcraft & Alchemy” and a life-potion formula (Walt Disney Archives). It does not publish a complete page scan or printable interior template in that account. You can therefore choose blank or decorative pages for a display build, or author film-inspired pages yourself; do not present original invented pages as scans of the prop.
Rank #3
Keep the film’s story description separate from production facts
The Archives article quotes the film’s fictional description: “This is the spell book of Winifred Sanderson. It was given to her by the devil himself. The book is bound in human skin and contains the recipes for her most powerful and evil spells.” That is story-world exposition, not a production record establishing the physical materials used to make the prop (D23 / Walt Disney Archives).
A screenplay copy hosted by Script Slug describes the book as containing “spells of destruction and life” and includes changing words or pages. It is supplementary script evidence, not proof that every described beat appears identically in the finished film, and it is not a fabrication guide (Script Slug screenplay PDF).
