For a first read, follow Sarah J. Maas’s publication-order list: Throne of Glass, Crown of Midnight, The Assassin’s Blade, Heir of Fire, Queen of Shadows, Empire of Storms, Tower of Dawn, then Kingdom of Ash. The prequel novellas happen earlier in the story, but the author and publisher place them after the second novel in their recommended reading sequence.

Throne of Glass reading order by publication

Sarah J. Maas’s official reading guide lists the eight books in this order, which Bloomsbury also recommends as the straightforward first-read sequence.

  1. Throne of Glass
  2. Crown of Midnight
  3. The Assassin’s Blade
  4. Heir of Fire
  5. Queen of Shadows
  6. Empire of Storms
  7. Tower of Dawn
  8. Kingdom of Ash

See the Sarah J. Maas official reading guide and Bloomsbury’s series reading order.

Where does The Assassin’s Blade fit?

The Assassin’s Blade is a prequel collection of five novellas, set before the events of Throne of Glass. Its story chronology makes it the earliest material, but both Maas’s list and Bloomsbury’s recommended sequence place it after Crown of Midnight and before Heir of Fire. Bloomsbury says starting with the collection is also acceptable; it simply gives publication order as its primary recommendation.

  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

The five novellas are The Assassin and the Pirate Lord, The Assassin and the Healer, The Assassin and the Desert, The Assassin and the Underworld, and The Assassin and the Empire. Maas’s book page for The Assassin’s Blade lists the collection and its contents.

Chronological order: what is established

“Chronological” can mean the order of events in the fictional timeline, rather than the order in which the books were published. The established points are that The Assassin’s Blade is a prequel and that Empire of Storms and Tower of Dawn take place at the same time. Bloomsbury provides a timeline graphic, but its accessible page text does not spell out a complete event-by-event sequence. For that reason, a more detailed chronological list should not be treated as verified here.

If you want the simplest chronological adjustment to the recommended reading sequence, move The Assassin’s Blade to the beginning. That is an optional reading preference, not Bloomsbury’s primary recommendation; the final two novels still overlap in time.

How to read Empire of Storms and Tower of Dawn

Empire of Storms and Tower of Dawn happen simultaneously. Bloomsbury recommends reading them in publication order—Empire of Storms first—because reading Tower of Dawn first would spoil parts of Empire of Storms.

Some readers use a tandem read, alternating chapters between the two novels to follow their overlapping timelines. It is optional and requires switching between books according to a chapter sequence. If that sounds cumbersome, read each book straight through in publication order, then continue to Kingdom of Ash. Bloomsbury explains the choice in its reading-order guide.

Which reading order should you choose?

Approach Best for Trade-off
Publication order Most first-time readers who want a clear, spoiler-conscious route The prequel is not read at the earliest point in the story chronology
Start with The Assassin’s Blade Readers who prefer to encounter the prequel background first Bloomsbury considers this acceptable, but recommends publication order as its primary sequence
Tandem read the final two novels Readers who want to interleave the simultaneous storylines Requires two books and a chapter-order guide; it is optional

How many books are in the series?

Throne of Glass is an eight-book series, beginning with the novel of the same name, first published in 2012. Bloomsbury’s Throne of Glass series page gives the series count and first-publication year. Maas’s page for the opening novel introduces its premise.
