How did Elon Musk say X Æ A-12?
In an interview excerpt published by People on May 8, 2020, Musk explained that X is spoken “like the letter” and that “the ‘Æ’ is pronounced like ‘ash.’” The final element is A-12, producing the spoken rendering “X-Ash-A-Twelve.” The Washington Post’s contemporaneous coverage also rendered his explanation as “X-Ash-A-12.”
Why isn’t that the only reported pronunciation?
The Los Angeles Times reported on May 8, 2020, that Grimes pronounced the name differently, including an “A-I” rendering for Æ. The article also reported Musk’s comment that Grimes had mostly come up with the name. The accounts establish a difference between the parents’ explanations, not a definitive reconciliation of how everyone should say it.
What is—and isn’t—settled?
The simplest accurate answer is: Musk said “X-Ash-A-Twelve.” That describes his stated pronunciation, rather than establishing an official or current preferred pronunciation. The Guardian’s May 6, 2020 coverage documented the announcement and public discussion. The reporting cited here does not establish the child’s current legal name or present-day pronunciation preference.
