Elon Musk said the name initially announced in 2020, X Æ A-12, is pronounced approximately “X Ash A Twelve.” Grimes gave a different explanation for Æ, saying it was “AI,” so “Ash” is Musk’s reported reading—not a pronunciation both parents agreed on.
How did Elon Musk say to pronounce X Æ A-12?
Musk broke the name into parts: X is said as the letter name “X,” Æ as “Ash,” and A-12 as “A Twelve.” Global News reported his explanation after he discussed the name on The Joe Rogan Experience. Global News’s account of Musk’s pronunciation gives the reading as “X Ash A Twelve.”
Why do some people say “AI” instead?
The parents described the Æ differently. In a social-media response quoted by CBS News, Grimes said to read it as “A.I.”—the letter A followed by the letter I. Musk called it “Ash.” CBS News’s report records that difference; it does not establish one pronunciation as jointly agreed.
What is the later spelling?
The name was first announced as X Æ A-12. Later 2020 reports gave the spelling as X Æ A-XII. CNA Lifestyle reported that form while citing a copy of the birth certificate obtained by TMZ, and The Independent also reported it. The available accounts here are secondary reports rather than a direct examination of the certificate: CNA Lifestyle and The Independent.

The “A-12” element was described as Musk’s contribution and an aircraft reference. That explains part of the name’s inspiration, rather than changing the spoken reading he gave for it.
