First decide whether subtitles should be permanently visible in the picture or selectable in YouTube’s player. For visible text, OBS can display a subtitle track through its VLC Video source, provided the installed VLC and file support it. For viewer-selectable captions during a live stream, a sidecar SRT file is not enough: caption data must reach YouTube through a compatible embedded-caption encoder or supported caption software.
Choose the subtitle workflow before editing
“Subtitles in the video” can mean three different things. The right workflow depends on whether viewers need to turn text on and off, whether this is a live stream or an uploaded replay, and whether the words should always appear on screen.
| Workflow | Can viewers toggle or select captions? | Best fit | Key limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| YouTube Studio sidecar captions | Yes, for the uploaded video | Videos and replays | Uploading a sidecar does not deliver captions during an OBS live stream. |
| OBS displays a subtitle track in the scene | No. The text is part of the picture sent by OBS. | Prerecorded material where always-visible text is acceptable | Compatibility depends on the file, track, and installed software; test it. |
| YouTube Live captions delivered by an encoder or supported software | Yes, when delivery is configured and working | Live accessibility with viewer-controlled captions | Requires a compatible delivery workflow. YouTube says it currently supports one embedded caption track. |
| YouTube automatic live captions | Yes, if the stream and channel are eligible | A possible fallback | Current guidance describes English-only captions with channel and latency limits; live captions do not remain on the video after the stream. |
For a documentary whose words must always be visible in the stream image, composited subtitles may be appropriate. If viewers need control over captions or languages, use a caption-delivery workflow rather than assuming OBS’s subtitle display sends caption data to YouTube.
Prepare an SRT or SBV sidecar
YouTube recommends SubRip (.srt) or SubViewer (.sbv) as basic subtitle formats. A sidecar contains text and timecodes; it is separate from the video file. For SRT, use plain UTF-8. YouTube says it does not recognize SRT style markup, so do not rely on formatting codes to control how captions look.

Check the file against the final video
- Confirm the subtitle language and make sure the text matches the exact video version you will stream. Different edits or cuts can invalidate cue timing.
- Save the file in a supported format. SRT or SBV is a straightforward starting point in YouTube’s guidance; save SRT as plain UTF-8.
- Review cue timing against the final export, especially the first and last cues and any points affected by edits or changes in duration.
- Proofread spelling and speaker labels. Add relevant non-speech audio cues when they help your intended audience follow the material.
- Test the sidecar in the actual playback path you plan to use. A correctly formatted file can still fail to appear in a particular player or source configuration.
Upload captions to a YouTube video
For captions attached to an uploaded video, YouTube Studio’s documented workflow is to open the video’s Subtitles area, select a language, choose Add subtitles and then Upload file, select whether the file includes timing, upload it, and save. YouTube also offers manual entry and auto-sync. For auto-sync, provide a transcript in the spoken language; YouTube cautions against using it for videos over an hour or with poor audio quality. This is an uploaded-video workflow, not a way to send a caption feed from OBS during a live stream. See YouTube’s supported subtitle and caption formats and instructions for adding subtitles and captions.
Display subtitles in the OBS scene
OBS’s VLC Video source documents a Subtitles Enabled control and a Subtitle Track selector. Subtitles are off by default, and VLC must be installed for the VLC Video source to be available. This route displays subtitle text in the scene; it does not make that text a separate, viewer-selectable caption track.

- Install VLC if needed, then open OBS and add the prerecorded video using a VLC Video source when you need its subtitle controls.
- In the source’s properties, enable subtitles and choose the intended subtitle track.
- Play through the material and inspect the OBS preview. Check that the correct language appears, cues line up with speech, and text is legible against the footage.
- If possible, make a private or unlisted test stream and watch it in YouTube. The encoded stream is what viewers receive; the OBS preview alone does not confirm the full playback path.
- If the track does not display reliably, use a suitable editor to render the subtitles visibly into the picture, export a new video, and test that version in OBS.
OBS documents video containers including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM, but its documentation does not guarantee that every subtitle codec, container, and track combination will work across operating systems or bundled libraries. Test the actual file with your installed OBS and VLC versions. See OBS’s Media Sources documentation.
Deliver selectable captions during YouTube Live
YouTube’s instruction is direct: “To add captions to your live stream, you need to send captions to YouTube.” Its documented routes are captions embedded in the video using EIA-608/CEA-708, or supported software that sends captions over HTTP. An SRT file beside a video, by itself, is not the documented live-caption delivery method.

Embedded EIA-608/CEA-708 captions
YouTube’s instructions describe enabling closed captions in the live setup, selecting Embedded 608/708, and configuring the encoder for EIA-608/CEA-708. Although those standards can support up to four language tracks, YouTube’s current guidance says it supports one embedded caption track. Treat that as a current platform limit, not a guarantee that every encoder configuration will work.
Supported caption software or services
YouTube also documents supported software that sends captions over HTTP. Its event-caption instructions describe ingestion through a signed HTTP URL and advise keeping system time accurate. Follow the current Studio instructions for the specific event and supported workflow you are using; do not assume that an OBS source displaying subtitles performs this delivery. Check end to end that captions arrive and that viewers can select them in the YouTube player. See YouTube’s Live caption requirements.

Automatic live captions are a separate feature
YouTube’s current help describes automatic live captions as English-only and subject to channel eligibility, latency restrictions, and audio or language limitations. It also says these live captions do not remain on the video after the stream. Availability can change, so inspect the live settings for the channel and event rather than planning on this feature being available. It is not a prepared subtitle-track workflow. See YouTube’s automatic captioning guidance.

- The VLC Video source is unavailable: OBS documents that VLC must be installed for this source. Install it, restart OBS if necessary, and check whether the source becomes available.
- The source plays video but no subtitle text appears: Subtitles are off by default in the documented VLC source. Enable them and select the intended track; then test the file in the installed OBS and VLC versions.
- The wrong language or track appears: Recheck the selected track and the subtitle file’s language against the exact video version. Confirm the result by playing through the clip, not just by checking the first cue.
- Cues are early, late, or cut off: Compare the timecodes with the final edit. Changes in duration, cuts, or opening material can shift timing; correct the sidecar or render a revised version and test again.
- Formatting in the SRT is ignored: YouTube says SRT styling markup is not recognized. Use plain UTF-8 text for a YouTube sidecar, or render any essential visual styling into the video for a composited workflow.
- Viewers cannot toggle text that appears in the stream: OBS-rendered or burned-in subtitles are part of the picture. Use a separately delivered live-caption route if viewer controls are required.
- A live stream has no selectable captions: A sidecar SRT alone does not establish live delivery. Verify that the encoder is sending EIA-608/CEA-708 or that supported caption software is sending captions over HTTP, then test in YouTube’s player.
- Automatic captions are absent or disappear after the stream: Eligibility and limits apply, and YouTube says live automatic captions do not remain on the video. Use a prepared caption workflow appropriate to the stream or replay instead.
