Start by choosing which version of Kaiju No. 8 you want to portray: Kafka Hibino in his Defense Force combat suit, Kafka transformed as Kaiju No. 8, or another character such as Reno, Kikoru, Mina, Hoshina, or Narumi. Those choices call for different silhouettes, materials, and build plans. Use official character art to anchor the design, then decide which elements to buy, alter, or make yourself.
Choose a character and version before gathering materials
“Kaiju No. 8 cosplay” can mean several distinct costumes. Kafka’s Defense Force look centers on a uniform, mask, and weapons; his kaiju form calls for a very different head and body silhouette. Other characters have their own recognizable clothing and equipment. Pick a specific character and version first, rather than combining details from different looks.
The official Kaiju No. 8 anime site identifies Kafka Hibino / Kaiju No. 8 and the principal characters. Its Japanese counterpart links character imagery for Kafka, Reno, Kikoru, Mina, Hoshina, Narumi, Kaiju No. 8, and others. These are good starting points for deciding which version you are reproducing.
Build a reference set around the silhouette
Collect clear images of the chosen version from multiple angles where possible. Prioritize the overall silhouette and the items that make the character instantly recognizable: the shape of the uniform, armor or headpiece, mask, and accessories. Record which details belong to your chosen version so you do not accidentally mix designs.

The official English site credits Tetsuya Nishio as character designer and chief animation director, and Mahiro Maeda for kaiju design. Use official character images as the primary visual reference; general fabrication guides can explain techniques, but they are not franchise-specific patterns.
Licensed figures can provide an optional three-dimensional reference. Kotobukiya describes its ARTFX J Kafka as Kafka wearing a Defense Force combat suit and calls out the suit, mask, and weapons. It is a 1/8-scale figure, 200 mm tall, made of PVC and ABS, and rated for ages 15 and up. Kotobukiya notes that availability varies by inventory and that listed specifications and pricing apply to Japan and may differ by country. This is a collectible, not a required cosplay tool. Bandai’s S.H.Figuarts Kafka Hibino is another optional reference. The official listing describes interchangeable hands and expressions, a handgun, and an empty holster; it gives an approximate height of 160 mm and PVC and ABS materials. Its listed Japanese release date is August 30, 2025. Choose what to buy, alter, or make
A modular approach lets you match the build to your time, skills, and priorities. There is no single construction route that fits every character or version.

No official licensed full costume or character-specific mask kit was verified for a defined market. If you consider third-party listings, evaluate the actual item and seller terms rather than relying on a product title alone.
Make a Kafka mask or helmet with a general foam workflow
For an original foam helmet or armor component, EVA foam is one possible material. Dremel’s guide demonstrates a general process: trace and cut a pattern, heat-shape the foam, smooth edges with a rotary tool, then heat-seal before priming. It is a general cosplay fabrication reference, not a Kaiju No. 8 mask template; it does not supply screen-accurate dimensions, a tested visibility design, or a complete material list. - Pattern: Translate your chosen reference into a pattern sized to the wearer. Check the fit with a paper or inexpensive mock-up before committing to the final foam.
- Cut and shape: Cut the foam components, then use controlled heat to form the curves. Keep checking the pieces against the reference and the wearer.
- Join and refine: Assemble the components and smooth the edges. A rotary tool can help with foam shaping, but work carefully to keep the intended contours.
- Seal and finish: Heat-seal the foam before priming and applying the chosen finish. Test finishing materials on a scrap piece first so you can see how they behave on your foam.
The exact pattern, material thickness, and finish depend on the design and wearer; the general guide does not establish Kaiju-specific measurements or a tested build.

A headpiece that looks right on a display can be difficult to wear. Before a long event, test the complete headwear and costume while standing, walking, turning, and sitting. Check that you can see your surroundings, breathe comfortably, hear enough to navigate, and move without catching or dislodging parts. Treat these as wearer checks, not as official design specifications.

Do a test fit before finalizing details. Confirm that closures stay secure, garments allow the movement you need, and any carried accessories can be managed safely. Make adjustments at home rather than discovering fit problems after you arrive.
Check the rules for your specific event
Prop and costume rules depend on the convention, venue, and year. Comic-Con International’s 2026 cosplay guide says costume props must be inspected daily at Costume Props Desks and that final approval rests with Prop Safety Officers.
