You can use filenames as instructions for your own automation script, but the script must parse them and then use YouTube’s Studio workflow or API operations. A scheduled Live broadcast and an uploaded video added to a playlist are separate tasks.
What filenames can—and cannot—schedule
A filename can hold workflow metadata for a script you build. It is not itself a YouTube scheduling control. In YouTube Studio, the documented scheduled-publishing flow has you select an uploaded file, enter its details, and choose a date, time, and time zone. The YouTube APIs instead operate on YouTube resources and their fields; they do not infer a schedule from a local filename. YouTube’s scheduled publishing instructions and the Live Streaming API reference describe those controls.
Keep these workflows distinct:
- Schedule a Live broadcast: create a broadcast event with a title, scheduled start time, and privacy status, then associate it with a stream.
- Add an uploaded video to a playlist: identify the destination playlist and the uploaded video by their YouTube IDs, then insert a playlist item.
A Live broadcast represents an event; a stream represents the audio and video being transmitted. They are separate resources associated through API operations, so retain their returned IDs for later calls. See the Live Streaming API documentation.
Choose a filename convention your script can parse
One possible local convention is YYYY-MM-DD_HH-mm_topic_sequence.ext. For example: 2026-10-30_19-00_evening-mix_003.mp4. This is an example to implement in your own script, not a YouTube standard.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Define the time zone for the date and time component; do not leave it implicit.
- Use a consistent 24-hour clock.
- Use a fixed-width sequence field if the script sorts filenames lexically, so
003sorts predictably alongside004. - Decide how to handle duplicate names, missing dates, invalid dates or times, and daylight-saving transitions. Reject ambiguous values rather than guessing.
The date and time in the name are your workflow’s metadata. Your script must translate them into the appropriate YouTube operation and fields.
Build a filename-driven playlist workflow
- Scan a designated folder. Have the script accept only files that match one strict pattern, such as the example above. Keep rejected filenames in an error log for correction instead of silently skipping or guessing.
- Parse and validate every field. Check that the date and time exist, the sequence is valid, and the topic meets your own naming rules. Apply the time zone your workflow has explicitly chosen.
- Upload or identify each video on YouTube. A local file is not yet a YouTube video resource. After upload, record the resulting YouTube video ID and retain a mapping between that ID and the local file. YouTube’s documentation distinguishes the upload from the video resource; see uploading a video and the videos resource.
- Resolve the destination playlist ID. Use the playlist ID for the playlist you intend to update; the channel’s uploads playlist and a user-created playlist are distinct. YouTube documents the channel uploads playlist in its implementation guide for videos.
- Insert the playlist item. The playlist insertion request uses
snippet.playlistIdand asnippet.resourceIdcontainingkind: youtube#videoand the uploadedvideoId. The request requires OAuth 2.0 authorization. See playlistItems.insert. - Record results and make reruns safe. Log the API result and track which local file, video ID, and playlist item have been processed. Design retries to check existing state before attempting an insertion again; avoiding duplicate items or events is your script’s responsibility, not a YouTube guarantee.
Schedule an actual YouTube Live broadcast separately
If the filename is also meant to set a Live event’s start time, the script must create a broadcast resource rather than treating playlist insertion as scheduling. The documented broadcast fields include snippet.title, snippet.scheduledStartTime, and status.privacyStatus. The start time must be in the future, and the API reference describes scheduling limits and error cases. Handle API failures explicitly; a valid-looking filename does not mean the broadcast was successfully scheduled. Consult liveBroadcasts and the broadcast insert method, and store the returned resource ID for future operations.

In YouTube Studio, scheduled publishing also asks you to select a file and set the date, time, and time zone. A scheduled video remains private until its publication time. The published-on date shown on YouTube uses Pacific Standard Time (PST), so its displayed calendar date can differ from the time zone shown in Studio. That detail concerns scheduled video publication, not a rule that makes filename scheduling native. See YouTube’s scheduled publishing help.
Do not confuse HLS segment names with video-library filenames
YouTube’s HLS ingestion guide has filename, extension, and sequence requirements for media playlists and segments sent to the Live ingestion endpoint. Those names govern delivery and ordering of stream segments, not how a creator names uploaded videos to schedule playlist entries. The guide describes the Media Playlist as telling the server which media segments to expect and how to order them in the reassembled stream. See YouTube’s HLS ingestion guide.

Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded videos looping as a YouTube Live stream, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option: upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It plays uploaded videos rather than broadcasting from a camera. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on; the stream runs at the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, and it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo for details, or start the free day.
