In OBS Studio, mute the source’s audio from its row in the Audio Mixer: click that row’s speaker-shaped mute button. This mutes that source to the output without hiding its picture or stopping the YouTube stream. Leave the source’s eye icon enabled in the Sources dock.
Mute one source in the Audio Mixer
- Find the Audio Mixer dock in OBS. If it is not visible in your current layout, make the mixer dock visible.
- Identify the mixer row whose name matches the sound you want to stop. Use the row’s speaker-shaped Mute Button.
- Click the button to mute that source. OBS describes it as the control “to mute and unmute the source to your output” (OBS Audio Mixer Guide, published April 3, 2026).
- Keep the source’s eye icon enabled in the Sources dock so its video remains visible.
Mute the audio, not the picture
The Audio Mixer’s speaker control and the Sources dock’s eye control do different jobs. The mixer control mutes or unmutes a source’s audio to the output; the eye icon hides or shows the source (OBS Sources Guide). If the video should stay on screen, use the mixer mute and do not turn off the eye.
If the sound continues after muting
Another source may be capturing the same audio. Check the Audio Mixer for duplicate capture paths, including both global desktop or device audio and scene-level capture sources. OBS warns that capturing a device as an Audio Input/Output Capture source while also selecting it globally can cause echo (OBS Audio Sources guide). If you use Application Audio Capture, OBS documents that feature for Windows 10 version 2004 or later and Windows 11, and cautions against leaving duplicate global desktop audio capture enabled (OBS Application Audio Capture guide).
- Look for another mixer row that may capture the same device or application.
- Check whether the device is also selected in OBS’s global audio settings as well as added as a scene source.
- Mute the duplicate path if appropriate, then check the resulting output. For complex routing, verify the sound at the output you actually use; behavior can depend on the setup.
Why recording tracks are not the live mute control
OBS supports multiple audio tracks for recordings so they can be edited later. That is different from muting one source during a live stream: use the source’s Audio Mixer mute button for the live task. OBS notes that standard video players play one audio track at a time (OBS Multiple Audio Track Recording guide).
