To multistream YouTube to other social channels, send the same live program to each destination either from a local encoder with separate outputs or through a cloud relay that distributes one incoming stream. A local setup gives you direct control but uses more of your computer and upload capacity; a relay reduces the work at your end but may have plan limits or costs. First confirm each platform allows your simulcast, then test every destination before going public.
What multistreaming means
Multistreaming, also called simulstreaming, sends the same live content to multiple platforms at the same time. YouTube describes it as going live with the same content across multiple platforms at once (YouTube Help).
This is different from YouTube’s horizontal-and-vertical presentation options, which provide two formats within YouTube rather than distributing a program across separate social platforms (YouTube Help).
Check eligibility before you set up
- YouTube: The channel must be verified and live streaming enabled. First-time activation can take at least 24 hours. YouTube says streamers must be at least 16 years old. See YouTube’s live-streaming requirements.
- Other destinations: Make sure each account is active and in good standing. Depending on your encoder or relay, you may need that platform’s stream key and RTMP server URL. Check the platform’s current help page for its access rules and setup steps.
- Terms: Verify that each destination permits your planned simulcast and any music, footage, or other material in the program. Rules and account eligibility vary by service, region, and account.
Choose a multistreaming method

YouTube describes local hardware or software encoding as a route for creators seeking control and high quality with a powerful computer, and cloud relaying as a simpler option that can reduce local load or accommodate more than two channels (YouTube Help). For an OBS-to-relay example, Restream’s guide connects destinations to its service, sets OBS to send to the relay, and then starts the stream in OBS (Restream’s OBS guide). Restream describes its relay as distributing the feed without separate encoding or additional creator-side bandwidth for each platform; that is the vendor’s description of its service.

Do not assume OBS by itself provides multi-destination output: the cited Restream guide presents its relay integration as the way to distribute an OBS stream to multiple platforms. Other software or plugins may offer different options; confirm their current behavior and support before relying on them.
Plan resolution, frame rate, and upload bandwidth
Choose resolution, frame rate, and bitrate to meet the requirements of every destination. There is no single universal bitrate: the appropriate values depend on the platform’s current guidance, your content, and the format you intend to send. If you encode separate outputs locally, add their target bitrates to estimate the total upload demand. YouTube recommends an upload speed of 1.5 to 2 times the combined bitrate for stability, particularly on a shared connection (YouTube Help, undated page, accessed October 3, 2026).

YouTube’s example: a 6 Mbps feed plus a 4 Mbps feed creates a 10 Mbps combined target; the recommended upload headroom is 15–20 Mbps. Run a speed test under conditions similar to the live session and watch stream health in YouTube Live Control Room. A cloud relay can reduce the number of feeds you send from your connection, but you still need enough reliable upload capacity for the single feed it receives.
Set up and test the stream
- Enable YouTube live access. Verify your channel and enable live streaming in YouTube Studio. Allow at least 24 hours if this is the channel’s first activation.
- Prepare the other destination accounts. Confirm account access and good standing. Find each destination’s stream key and RTMP URL if your chosen method needs them, and create or schedule a live event where required.
- Choose the encoder route. For local multi-output encoding, configure an output for each destination in software that supports it. For a cloud relay, connect the destinations in the relay and configure your encoder to send one input to that service. Follow the encoder or relay’s current setup instructions.
- Set output formats and bitrate. Select the resolution, frame rate, and bitrate each destination supports. For separate local outputs, total their bitrates and compare that figure with your available upload speed using YouTube’s 1.5–2x guidance.
- Run a low-risk test. Where a platform permits it, use a private, unlisted, or otherwise limited test. Check that video, audio, aspect ratio, and live status are correct at every destination before promoting the public event.
- Monitor each destination. Watch YouTube Live Control Room stream health and check the other destinations directly. Confirm that the live feeds remain available and that audio and video stay in sync.
Respect Twitch’s simulcasting rules
If Twitch is one of your destinations, its Terms of Service, Section 11, “Simulcasting,” require the Twitch viewer experience to be at least as good as the experience on other platforms. Twitch also says not to direct the Twitch community away to the other simulcast and not to combine other platforms’ activity in the Twitch stream using third-party tools. Read the current Twitch Terms of Service and check the rules for every destination before going live.

Troubleshoot common multistreaming problems
- YouTube will not let you start: Check channel verification and live-stream activation. If live streaming was enabled for the first time, activation may take at least 24 hours.
- One or more destinations show no video: Recheck that the destination event is created if required, and confirm its stream key and RTMP URL are correct and assigned to the intended output.
- Video stutters or drops: Compare actual upload capacity with the combined target bitrates for locally sent outputs. YouTube’s recommended headroom is 1.5–2x the combined bitrate; also check for other devices or applications using the shared connection.
- Your computer struggles: Local encoding puts the processing load on your device. Reduce local workload or consider a cloud relay, which receives one feed and distributes it.
- Viewers report a poor Twitch experience: Make sure Twitch viewers receive an experience at least as good as elsewhere, and avoid directing them off Twitch or merging other-platform activity into the Twitch stream.
- A relay feature or destination is unavailable: Confirm the destination’s current compatibility, your account eligibility, region, and relay plan. Do not assume a platform integration or feature is available to every user.
Keep an always-on documentary channel distinct
A scheduled multistream is for broadcasting a live program to several platforms at once. An always-on YouTube channel made from a playlist of recordings is a different workflow: it keeps uploaded content playing on YouTube rather than sending a live camera or live production to social channels. Choose the method that matches whether you are producing a live event or running a continuous recorded-video stream.
