Monitor both OBS and YouTube’s Live Control Room: OBS shows what your encoder is doing locally, while Live Control Room shows whether YouTube is receiving a healthy stream. For a temporary connection drop, OBS’s automatic reconnect may restore the feed. If OBS itself crashes, reconnect alone cannot restart it; that requires a separate, carefully tested monitoring setup. Always verify recovery on YouTube before assuming viewers are seeing the stream again.

What to check when an OBS stream goes offline

Three things can look like the same outage: OBS may stop encoding, your computer may lose its connection to YouTube, or YouTube may stop receiving a usable feed. OBS being open does not prove it is sending data, and OBS reporting an active connection does not by itself prove YouTube considers the incoming stream healthy.

  • OBS: Check the connection indicator, dropped frames, encoder errors, and whether the intended audio and video are still present in the local output.
  • YouTube: Open Live Control Room and check the incoming stream’s status, stream health, and preview.
  • Viewer-facing result: Check the watch page where practical, including audio and video, before calling the recovery complete.

YouTube’s live-stream metrics and dashboard provide YouTube-side health and status information. OBS’s local connection information answers a related but different question, so use both views.

Prepare before the broadcast

Start early and test a representative feed

YouTube recommends starting the encoder at least 15 minutes before an event, checking the preview in Live Control Room, and testing with representative audio and motion. This gives you time to catch problems before the audience depends on the stream. YouTube’s live-streaming tips also recommend monitoring quality and testing a backup encoder’s failover before the event.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Keep the stream credentials private

When setting up an encoder, YouTube’s workflow uses a stream URL and stream key. Treat the key as a credential: do not publish it or share it in screenshots or logs. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup instructions to connect OBS to the intended live event.

Diagnose the failure before restarting

If OBS output is missing or degraded

Inspect the scene sources, audio meters, encoder status, and computer load. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance identifies encoder configuration, sources, and CPU load among the areas to check when the stream is not working as expected. Restarting OBS without finding a source or encoder problem may simply reproduce the failure.

If OBS reports dropped frames or intermittent disconnections

OBS describes dropped frames as a sign that the connection to the remote server is unstable or cannot keep up with the selected bitrate; enough dropped frames can lead to disconnection. Its troubleshooting guidance says these issues are extremely unlikely to be caused by OBS Studio itself. Check outbound connectivity, competing network use, and whether your upload capacity has adequate headroom for the chosen stream bitrate. See the OBS connection troubleshooting guide and YouTube’s network streaming tips.

YouTube’s network guidance recommends capacity for the primary stream, backup, and an additional 20% of headroom. That is YouTube’s recommendation, not a guarantee that a particular connection will remain stable.

If OBS looks healthy but YouTube does not

Compare OBS’s local status with Live Control Room’s incoming-stream health and preview. If OBS appears to be sending but YouTube reports an unhealthy or absent feed, investigate the outbound connection and the path to YouTube’s ingest service instead of repeatedly restarting OBS. Use the status messages in Live Control Room to guide the next check.

Recover safely: reconnecting is not the same as restarting OBS

For a temporary connection drop, allow automatic reconnect

OBS automatic reconnect can attempt to restore a connection after a transient drop while OBS remains running. Watch OBS’s connection state and YouTube’s Live Control Room during the attempt. A reconnect cannot repair an OBS process that has crashed or a computer that has shut down.

For a crashed OBS process, use external monitoring only if you have tested it

OBS Studio 28 and later include a built-in WebSocket remote-control interface that external tools can use to control OBS. The interface makes remote control possible; it does not supply a ready-made outage detector or a complete monitor-and-restart system. You must separately configure and test detection, control, credential handling, and confirmation that YouTube is receiving the stream again. OBS’s Remote Control Guide explains the interface and password protection.

Secure WebSocket access with a password. Have the monitoring logic check OBS’s state before issuing a start command, and verify recovery in Live Control Room afterward. A blind restart loop can issue repeated or conflicting commands without fixing the cause. There is no one retry interval or maximum-retry setting established here for all current OBS setups.

Use YouTube auto-start and auto-stop for what they do

YouTube’s optional auto-start and auto-stop settings let the encoder start or stop a stream when those options are enabled. They are not documented as a way to detect an OBS failure or relaunch a crashed OBS process. See Manage live stream settings for the available controls.

Confirm the stream has recovered

  1. Check that OBS is encoding and its connection status has recovered.
  2. Check Live Control Room for a healthy incoming stream and inspect the preview.
  3. Confirm audio and video are present; if possible, inspect the viewer-facing watch page too.
  4. If recovery fails, return to diagnosis rather than repeatedly restarting. Note whether the symptom is local output, connection loss, or YouTube-side ingest health.

For a high-stakes event, YouTube recommends preparing a backup encoder and testing failover in advance. Its guidance suggests testing by stopping the primary encoder or unplugging its Ethernet cable. A backup is an optional redundancy measure, not a substitute for checking whether failover works in the actual setup.

Common problems and fixes

Symptom What it may indicate Next action
OBS remains open, but YouTube shows no healthy incoming stream OBS may not be sending usable data, or the outbound/ingest path may have failed. Compare OBS connection and output with Live Control Room status and preview; investigate the connection before restarting blindly.
Dropped frames or intermittent disconnections The connection to the remote server may be unstable or unable to sustain the chosen bitrate. Check upload capacity, network contention, and bitrate headroom; consult OBS connection troubleshooting.
OBS reconnects, but the stream still does not look right The connection may have returned while a source, encoder, or YouTube-side issue remains. Check local audio/video and encoder status, then verify YouTube’s stream health and preview.
OBS has crashed or is no longer running Automatic reconnect cannot restart a process that is not running. Restart OBS manually or use an independently configured and tested external monitor; confirm the result in Live Control Room.
Automation repeatedly issues start commands The monitor may be acting without checking state or confirming recovery. Make it check OBS state before control actions and verify YouTube ingest afterward; avoid an unbounded blind loop.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is a YouTube channel that keeps looping uploaded videos, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative to keeping OBS and a computer running at home. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud; it does not broadcast from a camera.

  • Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on.
  • Uploaded video streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot.
  • Automatic recovery is included if YouTube drops the stream.
  • The first day is free with no card required.

Monthly: $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo for details, or start your free first day.
