AI moderation is a first-pass filter, not a substitute for people: the controls and availability differ across YouTube, Twitch, and TikTok LIVE, and none of the official guidance establishes a cross-platform accuracy winner.
What AI moderation can—and cannot—do
On YouTube and Twitch, automated systems can hold potentially problematic messages for a moderator to review before other viewers see them. TikTok LIVE offers keyword filtering. These tools help manage predictable risks and busy chats, but they do not make moderation decisions reliably in every context. Twitch says automated systems cannot catch everything or be fully accurate; YouTube likewise cautions that no system is perfect.
Plan for a human to handle held messages, context-dependent remarks, appeals, and situations that require action against an account. There is no single cross-platform setting: configure the controls in the service where you are broadcasting.
Choose controls that match your chat
| Platform | Automation model | Human oversight | Other useful controls |
|---|---|---|---|
| YouTube Live | Basic or Strict settings hold potentially inappropriate messages for review; Strict holds a broader range. | The channel owner or a managing moderator can show or hide held messages. If no one acts, they remain hidden. | Blocked words and slow mode. |
| Twitch | AutoMod holds potentially risky messages for moderator review. | Moderators review held messages and can use channel moderation actions. | Blocked terms and phrases, link restrictions, slow mode, follower-only or subscriber-only modes, warnings, timeouts, bans, chat clearing, and Shield Mode. Feature availability can vary by account. |
| TikTok LIVE | Hosts and moderators can filter comments using a keyword list. | Hosts and moderators need to monitor the real-time broadcast and respond; the stream cannot be edited as it happens. | TikTok documents a limit of up to 500 words in the LIVE keyword list. Access and eligibility can vary by market. |
Platform descriptions above are from YouTube Help, Twitch Help, and TikTok’s LIVE safety guide, updated June 3, 2025. The platforms do not provide a measured comparison here of moderation accuracy or speed, so these options should not be ranked on those grounds.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
How to set up YouTube Live moderation
- Prepare channel rules and blocked words. In YouTube Studio, open the channel’s live chat moderation settings and add terms you want held or blocked. Choose terms that address risks specific to your community; review the list periodically so it remains useful rather than sweeping up ordinary discussion.
- Choose a hold level. Select Basic to hold potentially inappropriate messages, or Strict to hold a broader range. A broader filter may require more moderator review, so match the setting to the people available to review chat and the channel’s tolerance for messages being held.
- Assign a trusted managing moderator. Make sure someone responsible can monitor chat and review held messages. A channel owner or managing moderator can show or hide them. Messages left without a decision remain hidden.
- Enable slow mode if chat is moving too quickly. Slow mode limits how often viewers can comment, giving moderators more room to review activity. Use it when message volume is outpacing the team rather than treating it as a replacement for moderation.
- Check the controls before each broadcast. Confirm the hold level, blocked words, moderator coverage, and slow-mode choice in the channel’s current settings. YouTube’s guidance recommends trusted moderators and chat moderation to help avoid live-stream restrictions: Avoid restrictions on YouTube live streaming.
How to turn on AutoMod for Twitch chat
- Open your channel’s moderation settings. Find the AutoMod controls in the current Twitch creator settings. Twitch’s setup guide describes the available moderation tools; some features may not be available to every account.
- Set AutoMod to a level your team can review. It holds messages judged potentially risky for moderator review. Choose a level with your expected chat volume and moderator coverage in mind; the platform’s documentation does not establish one setting as best for every channel.
- Add channel-specific protections. Use blocked terms and phrases and link restrictions for predictable problems. Apply slow mode or follower-only or subscriber-only chat if volume or an incident calls for tighter controls.
- Staff the review queue and define escalation. Choose reliable human moderators who can review held messages and use warnings, timeouts, bans, chat clearing, or Shield Mode as appropriate. Twitch’s developer documentation describes AutoMod’s review model in Moderating Twitch Chatrooms.
- Consider a third-party bot only as an extension. Twitch notes that chat bots can fill gaps, particularly in fast chats or during malicious raids. Check current platform support and features before relying on a bot; availability and compatibility are not established by the platform guidance cited here.
How to filter comments on TikTok LIVE
- Prepare the keyword list before going live. TikTok lets hosts and moderators add up to 500 words to a LIVE keyword list. Use it for terms you consider inappropriate or potentially against TikTok’s Community Guidelines.
- Brief moderators and guests. Agree on who monitors comments and what to do if a guest or viewer raises a safety issue. TikTok says the host is responsible for content streamed by guests in multi-guest LIVE sessions.
- Confirm the controls are available in your account. TikTok says access and eligibility may vary by market, and some features may not be available when a creator first starts using LIVE. Check the current account settings before relying on a particular control.
- Plan to respond in real time. A LIVE broadcast cannot be edited during the stream. Keyword filtering can help screen comments, but it does not remove the need for a person to monitor the situation and act.
Match the moderation plan to the broadcast
- For a small, slower chat: Configure platform filtering and blocked terms, and ensure a trusted person can review held messages. Slow mode may not be necessary unless the pace becomes hard to manage.
- For a fast-moving chat: Arrange enough moderator coverage to keep up with held messages. On Twitch, consider slow or restricted chat modes when activity spikes; Twitch also identifies bots as a possible way to fill moderation gaps.
- For a sensitive topic or a documentary discussion: Set clear chat rules in advance and decide how moderators will handle personal attacks, harmful claims, or off-topic disruption. Automated filters can flag terms, but people need to judge context.
- For guest or multi-host broadcasts: Agree on responsibilities before going live. On TikTok multi-guest LIVE, the host is responsible for guest-streamed content, according to TikTok’s guidance.
- For any platform: Verify which controls your account currently has. Features can differ by platform, account, or market, and a control described in platform documentation may not appear for every creator.
Troubleshoot common moderation problems
- Too many harmless messages are held: Review the sensitivity level and blocked-word list. On YouTube, consider whether Basic rather than Strict better fits your review capacity; on Twitch, adjust AutoMod to a level moderators can handle. Check what the filter is catching before changing multiple controls at once.
- Problematic comments still appear: Add relevant terms to the platform’s blocked-word or keyword controls, use available link restrictions, and make sure a human is watching. Filters do not catch everything, and phrasing or context can vary.
- The review queue is falling behind: Add moderator coverage if possible and slow chat with the platform’s rate or restricted-mode controls. On Twitch, available options include slow mode and follower-only or subscriber-only modes; on YouTube, slow mode limits comment frequency.
- A held message stays hidden: On YouTube, that is the expected result if no one chooses to show or hide it. Have the channel owner or a managing moderator review it.
- A documented setting is missing: Check the current creator settings and account eligibility rather than assuming the feature is available. Twitch notes that some features may not be available to everyone; TikTok says access varies by market.
- A guest creates a problem during LIVE: Have a moderator or host respond while the broadcast is live; TikTok notes that the stream cannot be edited during the broadcast and places responsibility for guest content on the host in multi-guest sessions.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your broadcast uses uploaded recordings rather than a live camera, StreamNeo can keep a YouTube channel streaming those videos from the cloud. Moderation still needs to happen in YouTube chat; keeping a video stream running does not moderate viewers for you.
- Upload a recording or build a playlist.
- Add your YouTube stream key once.
- Go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded videos from the cloud.
Nothing has to stay on at home. Every slot streams your upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot. StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or the plans; UPI and cards are available in India, and card checkout is available worldwide. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
