To mix portrait and landscape property-tour clips in a YouTube Live loop, choose the live output format first, then build and test layouts that preserve each clip’s proportions. YouTube Live Control Room can provide horizontal 16:9 and vertical 9:16 outputs; its vertical view defaults to a center crop, but you can adjust the layout before going live. The key is to check that the framing keeps important property details—such as doorways, windows, and exterior boundaries—in view.
Choose how viewers should see the tour
YouTube’s Live Control Room supports horizontal 16:9 and vertical 9:16 versions of a live stream. In the default dual-format setup, the vertical version is derived from the horizontal stream with a center crop. You can change the vertical presentation to fit to phone width or use a stacked layout, then adjust zoom and position. Set this up before starting: YouTube says you cannot add the vertical format after the live stream has begun. YouTube’s live-streaming guide describes the available formats and controls.
One horizontal feed with YouTube’s vertical version
This is the simpler path when you want a single encoder output and YouTube’s Live Control Room to provide a vertical presentation. Inspect the vertical preview carefully: a center crop can remove details near the sides of a wide room or building shot. Fit-to-phone-width or stacked treatment may retain more of the image, though the property footage may occupy less of the screen.
Separate horizontal and vertical encoder feeds
If your encoder can send two outputs, YouTube documents a dual-stream setup using RTMP(S): choose Encoder and RTMP(S) in Live Control Room, then select a second stream key for the vertical output. Route the matching orientation to each key. This gives you more control over each composition but adds another output and stream key to configure and verify. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.

Prepare the mixed-orientation playlist
1. Sort and inspect the clips
- Group the source videos into portrait and landscape folders or a clear playlist order.
- Check each file’s dimensions and identify details near its edges that must remain visible, including room entrances, windows, corners, and the boundaries of an exterior shot.
- Decide whether each clip needs a dedicated composition when it appears in the opposite-shaped canvas. Do not assume YouTube will intelligently reframe every item in a playlist.
2. Design a layout for each mismatch
For a portrait clip in a landscape frame, consider placing the full-height video over a designed background or using a stacked composition rather than enlarging it until the sides disappear. For a landscape clip in a vertical frame, try fit-to-phone-width or a deliberate crop whose edges do not hide important features. A crop removes content; stretching the video to fill the frame distorts it. The OBS Project’s aspect-ratio guide explains why preserving the source proportions and designing around unused space is generally preferable to stretching.
3. Review transitions as well as individual shots
Build a sample scene for portrait footage in a wide canvas and for landscape footage in a tall canvas. Preview the transitions between orientations, including any background or stacked treatment. Check that the property remains legible and that movement does not push a key feature out of the chosen crop. These are practical framing checks, not a YouTube-provided property-tour preset.

Set up and test the live stream
- Configure the output before going live. In Live Control Room, select the desired horizontal and vertical formats and set the vertical layout, zoom, and position. If you are using separate encoder feeds, select Encoder and RTMP(S), set the vertical stream key, and route the correct orientation to each key.
- Match the encoder settings to the intended output. YouTube’s current encoder settings and bitrate recommendations cover resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate. You specify resolution, frame rate, and bitrate in the encoder; YouTube detects those settings and transcodes the stream for different devices and network conditions.
- Use a supported configuration. YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 for RTMP(S), supports up to 60 fps, recommends CBR and RTMPS, and recommends a two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. Its bitrate recommendations vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate, so consult its current table rather than relying on one universal value.
- Check the connection and both outputs. YouTube recommends testing with similar audio and motion before the event, monitoring stream health, and reviewing messages while live. As one specific example from YouTube’s table, 1080p at 30 fps is listed at 10 Mbps for AV1/H.265 and 14 Mbps for H.264. These are recommendations, not a guarantee that your encoder or internet connection will sustain the feed.
- Test the complete sequence privately or in another appropriate test stream. Play through representative portrait and landscape clips, inspect both outputs, and verify stream health and audio through every transition. Confirm that the correct content reaches each stream key and that important property features remain visible.
Know what viewers receive
YouTube says mobile viewers watching in the Shorts feed see the vertical version, while other viewers see the horizontal version. Both formats share the same stream URL and live chat. YouTube’s comparison table also says clickable chat and channel-description links are available for horizontal streams but not in the vertical live feed. Vertical-only metrics may take up to 24 hours to become available, according to YouTube’s format guidance.
Plan the playlist loop separately
YouTube’s Live Control Room documentation covers creating the live formats and configuring an encoder; it does not provide a native recipe for continuously looping a playlist of prerecorded clips. The reviewed official materials also do not establish that a particular encoder will switch compositions seamlessly across a mixed-orientation playlist. Choose playback and scene-switching software separately, then test the whole loop before publishing. Google’s YouTube Live Streaming API reference documents stream ingestion and health information, but not a prerecorded playlist-loop workflow.

Troubleshooting framing and stream issues
- A room or facade is cut off in the vertical version: the center crop may be removing the edge details. Adjust zoom and position, try fit-to-phone-width or stacked layout, or redesign the shot for the vertical canvas before the stream starts.
- The image looks unnaturally wide or tall: the source has likely been stretched to fill a differently shaped canvas. Restore its proportions and use background space, a stacked layout, or a carefully selected crop instead.
- The vertical output is missing: confirm that it was configured before going live. YouTube says it cannot be added after the stream has started.
- The wrong clip or framing appears on one output: check the routing to each stream key and verify that the vertical key receives the vertical feed and the horizontal key the horizontal feed.
- The stream health is poor or the encoder reports a problem: review Live Control Room messages, check the selected resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, and keyframe interval against YouTube’s current recommendations, and test whether the connection can sustain the chosen bitrate.
- A transition breaks the layout or playback stops instead of looping: verify the playlist and scene-switching behavior in the chosen playback or encoder software. YouTube’s documented Live Control Room setup does not itself specify continuous prerecorded playlist looping.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the playlist is ready and you want it to keep running without a computer or home connection left on, StreamNeo runs uploaded videos as a YouTube Live stream from the cloud. Upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops uploaded videos, not a live camera feed. You still need to prepare and check the portrait and landscape compositions in your video or production workflow.
- Nothing has to stay on at home; StreamNeo runs the stream from the cloud.
- Videos stream as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot rather than quality-based tiers.
- StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
- The first day is free with no card required.
