There is no established universal cricket-to-frog ratio or fader setting: the right balance depends on the recordings and the ambience you want.
Prepare separate cricket and frog sources
- Choose one cricket recording and one frog recording whose licenses permit your intended use. Keep them as distinct sources rather than combining them into a single file before balancing.
- In OBS, add each recording as its own media or audio source, then use the Audio Mixer to adjust their levels independently. Set a workable level at the source first, then fine-tune the faders while listening to both together.
- Check the mixer channel assignment. OBS explains that mono audio is heard in both left and right channels, while stereo channels are assigned independently. If a source reaches only one side, the ambience can sound lopsided.
OBS documentation describes green, yellow and red meter zones and a peak indicator. Red means the signal is close to clipping; clipping distorts audio. Keep the combined digital output below 0 dBFS. That is the ceiling, not a recommended ambience loudness or a target for either individual source.
Find a balance by listening, not by preset
No cited guidance establishes an ideal cricket-to-frog ratio, fixed fader positions or numeric dB target for this kind of ambience. Start with both sources audible, then adjust one at a time while listening to the combined output. The result should suit the particular recordings: one bed may naturally be denser or more prominent than the other.
- Watch the OBS meters as you adjust and check peak levels, especially when both recordings become loud at once.
- Listen for masking: if one sound makes the other hard to hear, adjust the relative levels rather than assuming either species should always dominate.
- Check left-right balance. If one recording is stereo, listen for channel imbalance as well as overall level.
- Inspect the loop seam and listen through repeated playback. The available guidance does not define a suitable loop length or guarantee that a catalog loop will join seamlessly.
Monitor and test before going live
- Use OBS audio monitoring to hear the sources and their combined result as you adjust. Monitoring headphones can be useful, but OBS does not require a particular type or brand.
- Record a representative section of the mix, including a loop transition if possible.
- Listen to the recording before starting the stream. If a source is too prominent, a channel sounds lopsided, the seam is distracting, or the meters approach clipping, correct the source or fader level and record another check.
OBS explains that audio in a recording or stream must remain below 0 dBFS; exceeding the digital maximum causes clipping distortion. Do not treat 0 dBFS as a level to aim for.

Check recording rights for live and archived use
YouTube says music and sound effects in its Audio Library are copyright-safe on YouTube. For Audio Library tracks marked Creative Commons, include the required attribution in the video description. YouTube says it knows only Audio Library content to be copyright-safe and is not responsible for issues arising from other libraries: YouTube Audio Library guidance.
For recordings from any other source, read the license for the actual file and confirm that it permits continuous livestreaming, archived or VOD playback, monetization, use in your intended territories, and any required attribution. Check whether it restricts standalone redistribution. “Royalty-free” by itself does not establish those permissions.

A nature-sound catalog lists loopable stereo examples titled “Night Crickets and Frogs” (0:47) and “Night Frog Orchestra” (1:17), with Colombia metadata. Troubleshoot common mix problems
