Live streaming uses different encoder settings: YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR), with the appropriate bitrate determined by codec, resolution, and frame rate. Neither set of YouTube recommendations guarantees a particular file size or quality.
First, identify which file or stream you need to make smaller
“YouTube stream video” can mean a prerecorded video you upload, a live signal you send to YouTube, or a separate copy you keep in cloud storage. These are different workflows. YouTube’s upload guidance covers the file submitted for an on-demand video; its live guidance covers the signal sent to YouTube. The cited guidance does not establish how a separate cloud archive stores or compresses a video.
- Reducing an upload file: adjust export settings before uploading the recording.
- Reducing live-stream bandwidth: choose live encoder settings that fit your connection and stream needs.
- Reducing an archive: identify which file your storage service keeps, then compress that file before archiving if the service’s workflow allows it.
Do not use YouTube’s live bitrate table as a guide to the size of a prerecorded upload, or assume that changing an upload export will reduce a separately stored archive.
Make a prerecorded video smaller before uploading
Use a YouTube-friendly export
YouTube Help recommends MP4 with H.264 video, progressive scan, variable bitrate, and the same frame rate as the recording. Its guidance also specifies High Profile, 4:2:0 chroma subsampling, and Fast Start placement of the MP4 moov atom. For SDR video, it recommends BT.709 color space. Preserve correct source color metadata: changing bitrate alone will not correct a color-space problem. See YouTube’s recommended upload encoding settings.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Choose resolution and bitrate together
YouTube’s published SDR upload recommendations vary by resolution and frame-rate class. The figures below are reference recommendations from YouTube Help, accessed in 2026; the page does not display a publication date. They are not guaranteed file sizes or minimum quality thresholds.
| SDR upload resolution | Standard frame rates (24, 25, 30 fps) | High frame rates (48, 50, 60 fps) |
|---|---|---|
| 720p | 5 Mbps | 7.5 Mbps |
| 1080p | 8 Mbps | 12 Mbps |
YouTube lists higher recommendations for higher resolutions; consult its current upload table for those values and for HDR. Lowering resolution or bitrate can reduce the amount of data in the exported file, but the outcome depends on the footage and encoding settings. There is no supported fixed percentage reduction to promise.

As a practical starting point, test a short section that represents the whole video before exporting a long documentary or other large recording. Check fast motion, fine detail, gradients, small text, and audio. If artifacts or text that must remain readable become unacceptable, raise the bitrate or retain a higher resolution. This sample check is practical advice, not a YouTube-prescribed test.
Keep frame rate and aspect ratio sensible
YouTube says to encode and upload at the frame rate at which the content was recorded; common rates include 24, 25, 30, 48, 50, and 60 fps. Dropping frame rate simply to shrink a file can make motion look less natural. The player adapts to different aspect ratios and devices, so do not add padding or black bars to force a shape; see YouTube’s video resolution and aspect ratio guidance.

Use separate settings for a live stream
For live ingestion, YouTube lists RTMP/RTMPS, recommends CBR, and supports H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 at up to 60 fps. It recommends a 2-second keyframe frequency and says not to exceed 4 seconds. The live bitrate depends on codec, resolution, and frame rate; for example, YouTube Help’s live recommendations accessed in 2026 list:
| Live setting | H.264 | AV1 or H.265 |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | 14 Mbps | 10 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps | 8 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
These are live ingestion recommendations, not estimates of an archived file’s size. Find the full, current table and protocol details in YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions. YouTube says it transcodes a live stream into multiple output formats for viewers, so the ingest signal is not the same thing as every playback version.

Check the connection and stream health
Run an upload-speed test and select a stream quality your connection can sustain. Test with representative movement and audio, then monitor stream health during the broadcast. A bitrate that exceeds the stable upload capacity can cause interruptions; lowering resolution or selecting a more efficient supported live codec may help, but confirm the encoder and workflow support the choice.

- The export is still too large: reduce resolution or bitrate in a test export, then inspect quality before processing the full recording. A higher resolution and more complex footage can require more data.
- The video looks blocky or fine text is hard to read: increase bitrate or preserve more resolution; inspect a representative section rather than judging from the export settings alone.
- The live stream buffers or drops: compare the selected live bitrate with stable upload capacity, reduce the live output demands if needed, and monitor YouTube stream health.
- Only low playback resolutions appear after upload: higher-quality versions may still be processing. YouTube’s upload troubleshooting guidance notes that new uploads can initially be available only at lower quality; see troubleshooting audio or video issues with uploads.
- Colors look wrong: verify that the export uses the correct color-space settings and source metadata. A bitrate change is not a color correction.
- Playback has unwanted bars: remove padding added to force an aspect ratio and let the player adapt to the video’s shape.
