Make the product and the review’s real takeaway clear at a glance, then check that the image matches what the video actually shows. For a standard YouTube video, prepare a 16:9 image—YouTube recommends 3840 × 2160 pixels—and upload it in YouTube Studio. You can assess performance in Analytics and, if eligible, compare up to three versions with Test & Compare.
How do I make a YouTube thumbnail for a product review?
1. Choose the frame around the review’s real point
Decide what a viewer should recognize immediately: the product itself, a particular feature you tested, or the outcome of the review. Keep the image relevant to the intended audience and avoid crowding it with competing elements. YouTube recommends audience-aware design and cautions that too much visual complexity can overwhelm a thumbnail. See YouTube’s thumbnail and title tips.
2. Capture several options while filming
Take product photos during the shoot so you have a choice when you publish. Capture a few frames with different angles or arrangements, while keeping each one faithful to the product and the review. A phone tripod can help steady a product photo, but it is optional; YouTube does not require it.
3. Make the product and any text legible at small sizes
Use a clear product image and a simple composition. If text adds useful context, keep it short and choose lettering that remains easy to read when the thumbnail appears small. YouTube recommends dynamic color and composition without overwhelming the image, and notes that thumbnails appear differently across devices.

4. Check that the visual promise is accurate
A thumbnail can emphasize a real finding, but should not show a feature, test result, or conclusion that the video does not actually support. YouTube’s title-and-thumbnail guidance calls for an accurate representation of the video, and its thumbnail policy prohibits misleading imagery. YouTube’s help page says: “Make sure your thumbnail follows our Community Guidelines.” Read the custom-thumbnail requirements and YouTube’s thumbnail and title tips.
What size should a YouTube thumbnail be?
Use the specifications for the video type. YouTube’s current help guidance recommends the following dimensions and formats; check the upload interface before publishing because platform requirements can change.

Upload file-size limits depend on device: YouTube’s cited help page lists 2 MB on mobile for video thumbnails and 50 MB on desktop. The same page says custom thumbnails for Shorts are currently added in YouTube Studio on a computer.

How should I compare thumbnail drafts?
Before uploading, compare drafts against the same criteria rather than choosing only the most dramatic image:
- Product visibility: Can a viewer identify the item?
- Small-size legibility: Is the product and any text still clear when viewed small?
- Audience relevance: Does the image speak to the people likely to care about this review?
- Accuracy: Does it reflect the actual test, feature, and conclusion?
- Meaningful distinction: Are the versions different enough to learn which presentation works better?
YouTube recommends reviewing thumbnail performance in Analytics. Its help page also reports that “90% of the best-performing videos have custom thumbnails”; the page does not state a publication year in the cited search result or page metadata, so treat this as YouTube’s reported statistic, not a current guarantee or a prediction for an individual video.
