How to Make & Upload Your Own Ringback Tones (What Still Works in 2026)

A local MP3 can change your ringtone, not the sound callers hear. Here is the current U.S. carrier reality, practical alternatives, business-phone options, and troubleshooting.

If you mean audio that callers hear while your mobile line rings, you usually cannot upload it to an ordinary U.S. cellphone. A ringback tone is controlled by a carrier or hosted phone system; a ringtone is the sound played on your own phone. You can still create a custom ringtone, and a business phone platform may support network-side announcements, but copying an MP3 to a handset will not change what callers hear.

Ringback tone vs. ringtone

The direction of the audio determines which feature you need:

Feature Ringback tone Ringtone
Heard by The person calling you You, on the receiving phone
Controlled by Carrier, PBX, or hosted voice platform Phone operating system and device settings
Stored on Network-side service Phone or synchronized user account
Can a local MP3 change it? No Often, if the phone supports importing it
Consumer U.S. availability Generally unavailable on major mobile service Commonly supported

A caller may also hear network status sounds for call waiting, a busy line, forwarding, or other conditions. A local ringtone cannot alter those sounds.

Can you still upload a custom ringback tone?

Verizon

No for Verizon’s ordinary U.S. consumer mobile service. Verizon discontinued Ringback Tones on October 31, 2020, and its support page says the feature is no longer supported: Verizon’s Ringback Tones support notice. Verizon support discussions also explain that the service was managed on Verizon’s servers, not uploaded to the handset, and that downloading a ringtone does not create a ringback tone (Verizon community discussion; server-side management discussion).

AT&T and T-Mobile

Current official consumer availability is not established here. Older AT&T manuals document Ringback Tone or Answer Tone menus, but those retired-device instructions are historical, not proof of a current service (AT&T Samsung Strive manual). A Verizon community post also says AT&T Answer Tones and T-Mobile CallerTunes had been retired, but that is community information rather than a current carrier announcement (Verizon community comment).

For a major U.S. consumer carrier, assume custom ringback tones are unavailable unless the carrier’s current support documentation explicitly says otherwise. Availability can differ in other countries, on smaller carriers, or in business telephony.

Why the old MP3 upload instructions fail

Older tutorials commonly tell you to upload an MP3 or WAV, trim it, download the result, connect the phone by USB, and drag the file onto the device. That workflow creates a local ringtone (if the phone accepts the file); it does not register audio with the carrier’s call-routing or media system. The surviving tutorial uses “ringback tone” for this ringtone process and is outdated: Techwalla’s upload tutorial.

Putting the file in storage therefore produces the most common result: you hear the custom sound when your phone rings, while callers continue to hear the carrier’s normal ringing audio.

Make a custom ringtone instead

Prepare the audio

  1. Use a recording you made, commissioned audio, public-domain material, or music licensed for this use.
  2. Trim a short, recognizable section and normalize its volume so it is audible without being harsh.
  3. Export in a format accepted by your target phone. File type, duration, size, and metadata limits vary by operating system, model, and software version.
  4. Import it through the platform’s supported ringtone workflow, then assign it in Sound or Ringtone settings.
  5. Place a test call to confirm that the phone plays it.

iPhone

An iPhone ringtone remains a device sound, not a carrier ringback tone. Use Apple’s current supported ringtone-creation and synchronization method for your iOS version (for example, an approved audio-editing or GarageBand workflow), then select it under the iPhone’s sound settings. Do not treat the iPhone’s general storage as a USB drive; exact menu labels change with iOS releases.

Android

Android behavior differs by manufacturer and version. Some phones let you choose an imported audio file directly in Sound settings; others expect a file in a designated Ringtones folder or require the manufacturer’s media-management workflow. Follow the instructions for your exact device edition, then select the file under Settings → Sound (the wording may differ).

Ways to give callers a custom message

Voicemail greeting

Record a personal greeting or announcement for callers who reach voicemail. This is not pre-answer ringback audio: callers hear it only after the call is sent to voicemail.

Business phone or hosted PBX

A business voice platform may provide custom announcements, comfort audio, music on hold, auto-attendant prompts, or a product-specific “custom ringback” setting. These are network features administered by the provider, not files installed on a personal mobile phone. Ask whether the audio plays before answer, during hold, or only in a menu.

One hosted-telephony portal documents custom ringback-tone uploads using WAV audio encoded as CCITT μ-law or A-law, 8 kHz, 8-bit, mono, with a two-minute maximum. Those requirements apply to that product only, not to mobile phones generally: UBOSS portal guide.

Audio, copyright, and privacy checks

  • Prefer your own recording, commissioned work, public-domain audio, or a license that covers the intended telephony use.
  • Buying a song for personal listening does not automatically permit redistribution, public performance, or use in a carrier or business phone service.
  • Providers may reject copyrighted, explicit, misleading, excessively loud, or overly long material.
  • Be cautious with sites that request your phone number. Verify the carrier or telephony integration, country and subscription terms, cancellation method, privacy policy, and whether the service is still operating.

Troubleshooting

“The file is on my phone, but callers hear a normal ring.”

That is expected for a local ringtone. Only a carrier or hosted voice service can control the caller’s ringback audio.

“An app created a ring tone, not a ringback tone.”

Check the wording and test from another number. “Ringtone” normally means the sound on your handset; it does not imply carrier integration.

“The old carrier page redirects or errors.”

The service may have been retired, archived, or removed from your account. Do not enter payment details until a current first-party support page confirms availability.

“The business system rejected my file.”

Check that product’s codec, sample rate, channel count, bit depth, file-size, duration, and naming rules. The WAV specification above is only an example from one portal.

“Only some callers hear the custom audio.”

Caller- or group-specific assignments were historically possible in some carrier systems. If a business platform offers assignments, confirm the target groups and routing rules; the audio file itself does not determine who hears it.

Choose the right solution

Your goal Use What it changes
A sound for you when the phone rings Custom ringtone Your handset’s alert
A message after you miss the call Voicemail greeting What callers hear after voicemail answers
Pre-answer audio for a business number Hosted PBX or business voice feature Network-side caller audio, subject to provider support
Hide busy or call-waiting status on a personal mobile line No reliable consumer equivalent Carrier network behavior remains in control

The Bottom Line

Want a sound for yourself? Make a ringtone. Want callers to hear it while waiting? You need a supported carrier, PBX, or hosted-voice feature. On major U.S. consumer mobile carriers, custom ringback tones are generally no longer offered.
