If yellow tones are the problem, a purple shampoo may help neutralize them; if you want a different overall shade, more even color, or a blended transition, a colorist can assess whether a gloss, toner, or blending service fits. Pair toning with conditioning care, and follow the product’s directions rather than leaving pigment on longer in pursuit of a stronger result.
Start with the issue you want to fix
“Brighter” can mean different things: less yellow, a cooler or warmer overall tone, softer-feeling hair, or a more dimensional transition between silver strands and existing color. Those goals call for different approaches.
- Yellow cast: consider a purple toning shampoo formulated for gray, white, or silver hair.
- Overall tone or uneven color: ask a colorist whether a gloss or toner can adjust the shade.
- Silver mixed with surrounding color: discuss a blending approach if you want dimension rather than full coverage.
- Dry or coarse-feeling hair: add conditioning care; tone correction alone does not address texture.
Use purple shampoo for yellow tones
Purple pigment can counter yellow because the colors are complementary. Colorist Kristina Moore, owner of BeautyWorx Hair & Nail Salon in Phoenix, told Vogue: “When you think back to complementary colors, like in art class, purple neutralizes yellow, which is the most common unwanted tone that shows up in gray or white hair.”
That makes purple shampoo most relevant when yellowing is the specific concern. It is not a universal fix for dryness, uneven lightness, or a shade that needs customized correction. Results also depend on the hair’s starting color and condition, so shampoo alone cannot guarantee a particular silver finish.

Use it according to the label
- Choose a purple shampoo intended for gray, white, or silver hair, and read its current directions.
- Apply and leave it on only for the time stated by that product. Do not extend the timing to chase a stronger result.
- Rinse thoroughly, then condition. Sephora’s guidance on using purple shampoo on gray hair likewise advises following the formula’s timing, rinsing well, and conditioning afterward.
Examples Sephora lists include Oribe Bright Blonde Purple Shampoo for Blonde & Silver Hair, Olaplex No.4P Hair Brightening & Toning Purple Shampoo, Moroccanoil Blonde Perfecting Purple Shampoo, and UNITE Hair BLONDA Toning Purple Shampoo. These are examples, not a tested ranking or endorsement; check current availability, formula, and label directions before buying or using one.
Keep conditioning in the routine
Gray hair can lose natural protective oils and may feel coarser, though texture varies from person to person. Purple shampoo addresses tone, not softness. If your hair feels dry, use conditioner or a mask after toning; Wella also recommends moisturizing shampoo between toning washes for dry hair. See its purple-shampoo guidance and this stylist discussion of gray hair and French blending. A hydrating conditioner for dry gray hair can support softness, but it will not neutralize yellow by itself.

When to ask a colorist about a gloss or toner
A salon gloss can customize the overall look, shifting it cooler or warmer rather than simply targeting yellow with a home shampoo. A colorist can assess your starting color, hair history, and desired result before recommending a service. Vogue’s guide to transitioning to gray discusses glossing as a way to adjust the overall tone.
Consider a consultation if you want a specific overall shade, your color looks uneven, or home toning is not addressing the issue. Ask what finish the service is intended to create and how it fits with your existing color; a gloss, toner, and blending service are not interchangeable solutions.

- Renews and refreshes faded highlights and ash-toned hair.
- Removes the dull yellow in silver hair, and leaves hair shiny without residue.
Consider blending if you want dimension, not full coverage
If you are growing out color or have silver strands among darker hair, you may prefer to make those strands part of a dimensional look rather than cover every one. Who What Wear describes French blending as softly blending silver into surrounding color. Whether that approach suits you depends on your current color and the transition you want, so discuss it with a colorist rather than treating it as a one-size-fits-all service.
