To make Facebook photos private, set the audience on each new photo post before you share it, then review the audience on photos and posts already on your profile. Facebook’s current profile picture and cover photo are exceptions: Facebook says they are public, though you can adjust the privacy of past profile and cover photos. Tagged photos have separate limits because you do not control the original post’s audience.
Choose who can see a new photo post

Start a post and add your photo.

Before sharing, open the audience selector at the top of the composer. Choose the audience you want from the options available for that content and account.

Check the selected audience, then share the post. If you want a smaller audience for a later post, check the selector again rather than assuming the previous choice is still right.
Facebook’s help guidance on choosing an audience for a post explains the selector; available choices can vary. A photo added to a post follows that post’s audience, so check the individual post rather than relying on a general privacy setting.

Change the audience for photos you have already shared
Open Settings & privacy and look under Audience and visibility. Facebook groups relevant controls in areas such as Posts and Profile and tagging, though labels and available options can vary by device, Facebook version, and profile type. The Facebook settings guidance describes these areas.

Find the photo or the post containing it on your profile.

Open that item’s audience control and choose a narrower audience if the option is available.

Review other older photos individually, including items in albums. Do not assume that changing a general setting retroactively changes every existing photo’s audience.

Confirm the audience shown on each item in your current account. A setting that limits future posts is not necessarily a change to content already shared.
Know the limit for your current profile and cover photos
Facebook Help Center states: “Your current profile picture and cover photo are public, so they can be seen by anyone on or off Facebook.” The current versions cannot be made private in the same way as ordinary photo posts. Facebook says you can adjust privacy settings for past profile and cover photos; look for those older images and inspect each item’s audience. Handle photos where you are tagged
A tag does not make you the owner of the photo or post, and removing it from your profile does not change the original post’s audience. The person who shared it controls the post’s selected audience. Depending on your Profile and tagging settings, you may also be able to allow an additional audience—such as friends, selected friends, or no one—to see the post on your profile. Facebook explains these distinctions in its guidance on who can see posts you are tagged in.
To limit whether tagged content appears on your profile, open Settings & privacy and find Profile and tagging. Review the audience options and any available tag or timeline review controls. Review can affect whether content appears on your profile; it does not guarantee that the photo is hidden from people who can already see the original post.

Check the result—and understand what privacy controls cannot do

Inspect the audience indicator on the specific photo or post after changing it.

If a menu label differs, look for Audience and visibility or Profile and tagging; menus vary between desktop, mobile, Facebook Lite, and account types.

Ask the person who posted a tagged photo to change its audience or remove it if you need the original post restricted.

A privacy change cannot retract copies, screenshots, or content already seen by someone who previously had access. Facebook’s guidance does not establish how quickly every surface or cached copy updates, so verify the item in your account.
