How to Make OBS Shuffle Videos in a YouTube Live Loop Playlist

Use OBS’s VLC Video Source to add multiple local videos, enable Shuffle Playlist and Loop Playlist, and send the feed to YouTube Live.

To shuffle multiple videos and keep them repeating in an OBS YouTube Live stream, add them to an OBS VLC Video Source, then enable both Shuffle Playlist and Loop Playlist. Shuffle changes playback order; loop starts the playlist again after it reaches the end. You need VLC installed, with its architecture matching OBS.

Set up a shuffled, repeating playlist in OBS

  1. Install VLC. The VLC Video Source uses VLC libraries and is available only when VLC is installed. Match its architecture to OBS; OBS specifically requires 64-bit VLC for 64-bit OBS. OBS Media Sources
  2. Open the scene you plan to stream. In the Sources panel, add a VLC Video Source. Give it a recognizable name, then add the local video files you want in its playlist.
  3. Turn on both playlist options. In the source’s properties, enable Shuffle Playlist and Loop Playlist. OBS documents these as separate settings: shuffle randomizes the media-file order, while loop repeats the list when playback ends. Loop Playlist defaults to on and Shuffle Playlist defaults to off, so check both rather than relying on defaults. OBS Media Sources
  4. Check picture and sound. Confirm the VLC source is visible in the active scene, that the intended files play, and that their audio is reaching the OBS stream mix. If the source is hidden or its audio is not included in the mix, viewers may not see or hear the playlist as intended.
  5. Connect OBS to YouTube. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, create or select the stream and copy its stream URL and stream key into OBS’s streaming settings. Start the OBS encoder, verify that the preview appears in Live Control Room, then follow the interface’s go-live step for that stream. YouTube: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder

Choose the right OBS source

Source Best for Repeat control Shuffle control
Media Source One video file Its own Loop control Not documented as a multi-file playlist option in OBS’s source documentation
VLC Video Source Multiple local files in a playlist Loop Playlist Shuffle Playlist

Use Media Source when you only need to repeat one file; use VLC Video Source when you need a playlist, shuffled order, or both. OBS’s Media Sources documentation was dated January 11, 2022. The playlist in OBS is an encoder source, not a YouTube watch-page playlist: YouTube’s playlist loop controls apply to playback on YouTube, not to arranging the feed OBS sends to the encoder. YouTube encoder setup

What shuffle and loop do—and do not do

  • Shuffle is not repeat. Shuffle randomizes the order of the files; Loop Playlist repeats playback after the list ends. Enable both for randomized playback that keeps going through repeated playlist cycles.
  • A shuffle setting does not establish a new order for every individual transition. OBS describes the setting as randomizing media-file playback order; it does not promise a particular sequence or a specific reshuffle schedule.
  • Keep the playlist files available locally. This setup plays the files added to the VLC Video Source; it does not turn a YouTube watch-page playlist into an OBS source.

Protect the stream key and clear content rights

A YouTube stream key is a credential that tells the encoder where to send the feed and lets YouTube accept it. Treat it like a password: do not publish it, show it in a recording, or share it with anyone who should not control your stream. YouTube: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder

Before streaming, confirm that you have the rights needed for every video and audio track, including relevant music licenses. YouTube’s livestream terms require providers to have the necessary rights for their content. A technically working playlist does not grant permission to broadcast or archive its contents. Optional alternative: Media Playlist Source plugin

The OBS Project Forum listing describes Media Playlist Source as an optional alternative to VLC Video Source. The listing says it requires OBS Studio 30.0.0 or newer and advertises saved playback position and reshuffling after the last file plays. It is a third-party plugin, not a prerequisite for the built-in VLC workflow; consider it only if those specific playlist behaviors suit your setup. OBS Project Forum: Media Playlist Source
