You can earn on YouTube through advertising and Premium viewing, channel memberships, viewer payments such as Super Chat and Super Thanks, and product sales or commissions through Shopping. Which options you can use depends on your country, channel status, and the requirements for each feature. Meeting a threshold makes you eligible to apply to the YouTube Partner Program (YPP); it does not guarantee acceptance or income.
Choose a monetization route that fits your channel
YouTube’s options differ in what triggers revenue and what work they require. Ads and Premium revenue are tied to viewing; memberships ask viewers to pay regularly for perks; Supers let viewers pay in connection with live chat or appreciation of content; Shopping connects viewers with products. These are different business models, not interchangeable settings or guaranteed income rankings.
| Route | How it can generate revenue | What it tends to suit |
|---|---|---|
| Watch Page ads | A share of net advertising revenue from eligible long-form videos on Watch Pages. | Channels whose long-form videos attract eligible viewing and meet monetization policies. |
| Shorts Feed ads | A share of revenue allocated through the Shorts Creator Pool, based on the creator’s share of views. | Channels publishing Shorts and qualifying for the higher YPP threshold. |
| YouTube Premium | Revenue sharing associated with Premium members watching eligible content. | Channels with viewing from Premium subscribers; this is part of the higher-tier YPP options. |
| Channel memberships | Recurring viewer payments in exchange for channel perks. | Creators able to offer and maintain worthwhile member benefits. |
| Super Chat and Super Stickers | Viewer payments associated with eligible live-chat interactions. | Channels that host live streams where viewers participate in chat. |
| Super Thanks | Viewer payments to show appreciation on eligible videos or Shorts. | Channels whose audiences want to support individual uploads. |
| YouTube Shopping | Eligible creators can promote products from their own store or tag products from other brands; third-party product features may pay commission. | Channels with relevant products and an audience likely to find them useful. |
Feature eligibility and availability vary by location and channel. Check YouTube Studio → Earn for the options available to your account and the current requirements. YouTube’s overview of monetization features is at Choose how you want to monetize.
Understand the two YPP eligibility tiers
In eligible regions, YouTube has an expanded YPP threshold for earlier access to certain fan-funding and Shopping features, and a higher threshold for Watch Page ads, Shorts Feed ads, and YouTube Premium revenue sharing. These thresholds are alternative paths: a channel needs the subscriber requirement plus either the long-form watch-hour path or the Shorts-view path.

| YPP stage | Subscriber and activity threshold | What it can unlock |
|---|---|---|
| Expanded YPP | 500 subscribers; 3 valid public uploads in the prior 90 days; and either 3,000 qualified public watch hours on long-form videos in the prior 365 days or 3 million qualified public Shorts views in the prior 90 days. | Eligible fan-funding features and Shopping, subject to location and feature-specific requirements. |
| Higher YPP threshold | 1,000 subscribers; and either 4,000 qualified public watch hours on long-form videos in the prior 365 days or 10 million qualified public Shorts views in the prior 90 days. | Watch Page ads, Shorts Feed ads, and YouTube Premium revenue sharing, in addition to features for which the channel separately qualifies. |
Shorts Feed viewing time does not count toward the long-form watch-hour route. Paid campaign views and watch time do not count toward these thresholds, apart from qualifying organic follow-on views described by YouTube. Thresholds apply only where the expanded program is available; confirm the current figures and your channel’s progress in Studio → Earn. See How to earn money on YouTube.
Apply to YPP: eligibility is not acceptance
Reaching a threshold makes a channel eligible to apply, not automatically a partner. YouTube checks the channel as a whole for policy compliance, and individual features may have additional requirements. YouTube says reviews can involve automated systems and human reviewers.

- In YouTube Studio, open Earn to review your eligibility and available features.
- Make sure the channel meets the YPP requirements: follow channel monetization policies, be in a supported country or region, have no active Community Guidelines strikes, enable 2-Step Verification, have access to advanced features, and link an active AdSense for YouTube account.
- Apply from the Earn tab when YouTube makes the application available, and follow the displayed steps to accept the relevant terms and connect payment setup.
- Track the application status in Earn. If accepted, review and enable the monetization modules available to your channel; joining YPP does not mean every feature is automatically active.
The official YouTube Partner Program overview and eligibility explains current account conditions and application steps. YouTube may show ads on videos even when a creator is not eligible to receive a share of that revenue.
What the published revenue shares mean
YouTube’s help pages state these revenue shares under the applicable terms, viewed on October 3, 2026. They are module-specific shares, not a forecast of take-home income: YouTube says there is no guarantee about how much, or whether, a partner will be paid.

| Revenue module | Published share | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Channel memberships, Super Chat, Super Stickers, Super Thanks | 70% of net revenues | Applies to these fan-funding modules, not to all channel revenue. |
| Watch Page ads | 55% of net revenues | Applies to eligible Watch Page advertising revenue. |
| Shorts Feed ads | 45% of allocated Shorts Creator Pool revenue | Allocation is based on the creator’s share of views; it is not 45% of a fixed per-view rate. |
Actual earnings depend on activity, the relevant terms, eligible views or payments, and other factors. YouTube does not provide a universal earnings-per-view figure that can reliably predict what a particular channel will make. See YouTube partner earnings overview.
Keep monetization eligible and content rights clear
YPP policies are an ongoing condition, not a one-time hurdle. YouTube applies its Community Guidelines, terms, copyright and rights-clearance requirements, advertiser-friendly guidance, and feature-specific terms. A channel that has met the audience thresholds can still have earnings limited or face enforcement.

- Use content you have rights to use. Copyright claims or disputes can affect monetization and finalized earnings. Documentary footage, music, archival material, and clips may require appropriate rights or permissions; attribution alone does not necessarily grant a right to use them.
- Avoid invalid traffic and fake engagement. Artificial views, clicks, or engagement can lead to revenue adjustments or withholding.
- Check advertiser suitability. Videos that do not meet advertiser-friendly guidelines or other restrictions may receive limited or no ad earnings.
- Make original, valuable programming. Reused or repetitive material can raise monetization-policy concerns even when a channel meets numeric thresholds. Review YouTube’s policy before building a channel around compilations or lightly edited source footage.
- Stay active. YouTube reserves the right to turn off monetization on channels with no upload or Posts-tab activity for six months or more; this is a platform reservation, not a statement that every inactive channel is automatically demonetized.
Read the current YouTube channel monetization policies and check your Studio notifications if monetization changes. YouTube may investigate invalid traffic, Content ID claims, or disputes, and those processes can delay payment.

AdSense for YouTube is the payment route for finalized earnings. YouTube says finalized previous-month earnings are added to the AdSense for YouTube balance between the 7th and 12th of the current month. Estimated revenue shown in analytics can change, including because of invalid traffic, Content ID claims or disputes, and campaign types; treat estimates as provisional until finalized.

Google requires U.S. tax information from monetizing creators regardless of where they live, to determine withholding on earnings from U.S. viewers. You may also have tax obligations in your own country or region. Requirements and final liability depend on your circumstances and local rules, so consult the relevant tax authority or a qualified adviser rather than treating platform reporting as personal tax advice.

Can a 24/7 documentary stream be part of a monetization plan?
A continuous stream can give viewers a place to watch a programmed loop of documentaries, but keeping a stream live does not itself guarantee YPP eligibility, ad serving, or earnings. The channel still needs to meet YPP conditions, and the material must comply with rights and monetization policies. A stream built from footage you do not have permission to broadcast can create copyright claims or other enforcement risks. Confirm available live-stream features in Studio → Earn.
Or let it run in the cloud
StreamNeo keeps a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos, without leaving a computer or home connection running. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, then go live. It loops the uploaded video in the cloud; it does not stream from a camera. Every slot supports the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, includes 10 GB storage pooled across active slots, and can recover automatically if YouTube drops the stream. A day, week, month, six-month, or yearly billing period is available, with cancellation any time; UPI and cards are accepted in India and card checkout is available worldwide. The first day is free with no card, once per account.
Monthly pricing: $9.99 per month. For a YouTube documentary loop, the setup is upload the video, add the stream key, and go live. See the copyright safety checklist before streaming material, and review the StreamNeo plans. Start your free first day with StreamNeo.
